Akasha - Akasha - 1977 (Space/Progressive Rock {Norway})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Akasha is a Norwegian quintet who recorded a strange and fascinating album in 1977. They are: Kjell Evensen on drums; Arild Andreasson on bass; Jens-Ivar Andreassen on guitar, mellotron, synthesizers, piano and organ; Tor Johnny Hansen is credited by the lyrics in a particular track; and Sverre Svendsen handles the mellotron, as well as the English vocals - much reminding Greg Lake, by the way. Musically speaking, comparisons are not easy: try to imagine a mixture of the beginning of Genesis and Moody Blues, although it is a harder and stranger version of the latter. Akasha writes prog and dark and ominous lyrics with a strong sci-fi bent. The LP version of his album is now a collector's item with 3-digit underground market prices; even the small Swedish label (APM), which released its CD version in 1995, ceased to exist.

The song on their self-titled album (which has an 11-minute epic opening) is loaded with synthesizers, mellotron and space effects that will not doubt send fans straight to "Heaven" (the mellotron appears prominently throughout the album, relegating the guitars to a role secondary). Jens Andreassen explores his synthesizers to the fullest, ripping out a variety of experimental analog sounds and noises (what he does with filters and oscillators is simply incredible). The only problem with the album is its faint sound - it was recorded in a pump cellar at a hotel in the town of Finnsnes. Except for this "flaw", Akasha is brilliant and true of the underground Scandinavian prog.
