Ton Steine Scherben (Krautrock/Hard/Psychedelic/Proto-Punk/Rock {Alemanha})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ton Steine Scherben (German pronunciation: [toːn ʃtaɪnə ʃɛːɐ̯bən]) was one of the first and most influential German-language rock bands of the 1970s and early 1980s. Well-known for the highly political and emotional lyrics of vocalist Rio Reiser, she became a musical spokesperson for new Left movements, such as Squatting Movement¹ during that time in Germany and her hometown of West Berlin . Today, after the end of the band in 1985, and the death of Reiser River in 1996, Ton Steine Scherben maintained a cult and popularity in related scenes. Recently, some of the remaining members gave assembly concerts.

The literal translation of Ton Steine Scherben is "Clay stone shards" - in German, "Ton" can also mean "sound", so the name of the band can be considered an amphibology. The singer River Reiser used to tell reporters that the name was taken from a description of the pioneering archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann about what he saw when he arrived at the site of ancient Troy. Other members of the band affirm in the biography "Keine Macht für Niemand - Die Geschichte der Ton Steine Scherben" ("No power for anyone - the story of Ton Steine Scherben") which is a play on the name of the union of the West German labor union, Bau-Steine-Erden. The band's name is also a tribute to The Rolling Stones and Die roten Steine (The Red Rocks), a theater group of interns from Berlin.

HISTORY

Formed in 1970 by vocalist and guitarist Rio Reiser (his legal name was Ralph Christian Möbius), guitarist R.P.S. Lanrue (legally named Ralph Peter Steitz), Kai Sichtermann on bass, and drummer Wolfgang Seidel, when members were about 20 years old. Nowadays, she is considered one of the first genuinely German rock bands; appearing after the still more obscure Ihre Kinder, but well before the Udo Lindenberg's Panikorchester, the band's first major hit in German. His first appearance on a big stage was in an open-air on September 6, 1970 on Fehmarn stage, where Jimi Hendrix had his last appearance.

A house next to the stage caught fire while they were still playing. It was alleged that she had been set on fire by security personnel, who had just received word that the organizers of the event had disappeared with all the receipts. Still, many people believed that Ton Steine Scherben had set the stage on fire, which gave him enormous credibility in the radical scenario.

Scherben released their material through their own label. David-Volksmund-Produktion ("David and Goliath" and Volksmund = voice of the people) released not only the Scherben LPs, but also Caramboulage, a girl band consisting of Angie Olbrich, Elfie-Esther Steitz-Praeker (sister of RPS) and Britta Neander (deceased in 2005); they were also involved in the German gay movement, so they released two Brühwarm LPs and a boygroup name, Stricher (something like "Hustler" or "The Moneyboys"); the last disc of David-Volksmund-Poduktion is the LP Sternschnuppen of the singer and composer Misha Schoeneberg. In 2003, DVP was brought back to life.

In the mid-1970s the pressure on Scherben, who came from its anarchist fan base, grew. The band felt more and more like a "music box", playing for the radical scene at the time. As the band attempted to switch to more personal lyrics, the radical scene insisted that they remain as political as ever. Under this pressure, the band escaped from Berlin to Fresenhagen, a small town in Nordfriesland, where they bought an old farm, which the band's numerous members (about 16 altogether) repaired. There they tried to realize the dream of "working and living together".

After a period of management of Claudia Roth - later co-chair of the Green Party - they split up in 1985, when the band's debt became unbearable and also because they thought that "whatever could be said to be said. "

The singer Rio Reiser then embarked on a solo career until his death in 1996. At that time the rest of Ton Steine Scherben met once again for a farewell concert.

In 2014, 29 years after the split, the band met and went on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

MUSICAL TRAITS, LYRICAL THEMES AND INFLUENCE

Ton Steine Scherben was a pioneer in German musical culture. His style has been described as rock with a "renegade posture," which in later years would be dubbed "punk." His lyrics were initially anti-capitalist and anarchist. They did not think that socialism in the Soviet Union was anywhere near real socialism, and had connections to the squatter scene (as seen, for example, in the lyrics of "Rauch-Haus-Song") and German terrorists of the Red Army Faction before they were turned into violent crimes and murder.

Later, Ton Steine Scherben weakened the political issues and explored more personal subjects like freedom, love, drugs and sadness. They also contributed to two complete concept albums on homosexuality, which were published under the name of Brühwarm (literally: boiling) in cooperation with a gay-revue group.

All of his albums were self-published and promoted. Album revenues were scarce and the band was often expected by other leftists to give free "solidarity concerts" at political events, which contributed to the band's perpetually poor financial situation and its eventual dissolution. Only a few singles were released, which rarely received commercial attention. The Scherben were also on the so-called "black lists" because of their apparent Left-wing extremism and therefore were not played on public radio stations in Germany at the time (private radio was only legalized in Germany in the late 1980s, after the dissolution of band).
