Appaloosa - Appaloosa - 1969 (Psychedelic Folk Baroque Rock {US})

From the Boston folk scene, the Appaloosa band of John Parker Compton appeared, which would also include the Earth Opera (and its continuity Sea Train) and James Taylor. John Parker Compton (vocals and guitar) formed an experimental duo with David Batteau and played some shows in Boston and Cambridge. The duo evolved with David's brother, Robin, taking over the violin, before expanding into a quartet with the arrival of Eugene Rosov (cello), David Reiser (electric bass). They played every Sunday afternoon at Cambridge Common Music Concerts.

Rosov and Batteau were Harvard students, while Reiser met with prominent jazzmen at Boston clubs.
The group arrived in New York to audition the legendary Al Kooper, playing directly in their office and instantly getting a recording deal. The prominent Kooper (producer and musician of The Blues Project, Blood Sweat & Tears and Bloomfield) was the producer of their only album.

This album was labeled as Baroque folk, a term also applied to Donovan, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Rush, Nick Drake, Bobbie Gentry, Tim Buckley, Phil Ochs, Bee Gees and Tim Hardin, and meant mixed folk with classical/symphonic music.

Unfortunately, the album was barely noticeable, staying four weeks on the Billboard EUA, reaching 128, since these popular Baroque albums were flooding the radio waves at the time. It would be Appaloosa's only album. The band ended when Compton, Batteau and some friends went to California. John and Robin worked as doubles at Columbia for the Compton & Batteau album in California, with John making his first solo album shortly thereafter. To this day, John Parker Compton is still active in folkloric circles and reformed the group in 2005, but nothing has come of it yet.
