Parzival (Progressive Folk Rock {Alemanha})

Parzival foi uma
banda alemã de progres-
sive folk rock.

HISTORY

The band's roots can be found in the 1960s group The Chamberlains, based in Bremen, where singer and guitarist Lothar Siems and drummer Thomas Olivier played together. In 1967, they teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Walter Quintus and formed a trio that toured France extensively. In 1969, upon graduating from the Beazzic Conservatory, they decided to name the group Parzival, and went to Decca Studios in London to record a single.

The trio was later chosen by renowned producer Conny Plank and recorded their ''Legend'' debut in autumn 1971 at Star Music Studios, in Hamburg. It was through Conny Plank that they were also signed to Telefunken Records, where their first album was released. For the recording of the first LP, the band featured musicians Walter von Seydlitz and Nina on cello, Andreas Helms on bass and Matthias Müeller-Menckens on flute and piano (who would later become a member of the band).

The album was very well received and praised by music critics: "Classical, jazz and rock blend into a convincing sound" (Basler Zeitung), "Sound locks of discrete elegance and beauty" (Frankfurter Allgemeine), "One of the most interesting groups in Europe" (Melody Maker), "A variety of ideas that is second to none" (Kölner Stadtanzeiger), "A strange soundscape with a mysterious touch" (Pop). Petra magazine hailed "Legend" for "Record of the year".

The German journalists poll counted the album among the five best productions of 1972. The TV channel ARD broadcast portraits of the band - ARD is Germany's first television channel. ARD is German abbreviation for Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten Deutschlands. The Ufa-Wochenschau produced the first clip in German rock history with the titles "Empty land" and "Senseless No. 6".

The musicians consistently followed their course until the second and final album of 1973. "BaRock" was a perfect blend of progressive folk, art rock and classical music elements. The Aachener Zeitung (German daily newspaper) wrote after the release: "This is not, only, worth listening to music of the 70s, that's almost a chore to listen to. Here different influences merge into a warm convincing sound". However, "BaRock" became Parzival's final stage and, after its release, the band broke up. The musicians spread out in all directions. In 1977, Lothar Siems and Walter Quintus released the critically acclaimed rock opera "Der Führer". Quintus is still successful working in the music business.
