Galliard (Psychedelic/Progressive Jazz Brass Rock {UK})

Galliard was a sextet formed in the summer of 1968 in Birmingham, England, who developed a psychedelic type of brass rock, and was led by twins Caswell and Smith and singer Geoff Brown. The band recorded two albums on record label Deram (Decca Records's subsidiary prog label) at the turn of the 1970s, when brass rock was in vogue. Their first album, "Strange pleasure", released in 1969, was quite eclectic, ranging from medieval to flamenco music, although the predominant style here is brass rock, which characterized the band's sound.

The second album came out the year after its debut release, with a major lineup change, even though five of the original six members remained: while saxophonist John Smith left, he was replaced by a four-man section, not including the trumpet from Caswell. Also joined the keyboardist John Morton and percussionist Tommy Thomas. Although these are included as band members in some reference books, some of the musicians play so few things that they were probably guest musicians (such as the well-known Harry Beckett playing only on two tracks).

Released again by the label Deram, the album features an all-black cover and was recorded in the first seven months of the 70's. Although the album's name suggests a fresh start, the album remains quite close to its debut effort (at least in half of the tracks), although Indian sitars, flutes and other instruments are included. As with the first album, most of the tracks are written by singer and guitarist Geoff Brown, but two of them are shared with new keyboardist John Morton, and Dave Caswell writing the rest. Another small difference is that bassist Andrew Abbott also has many vocal functions.
