Tonton Macoute - Tonton Macoute - 1971 (Progressive Jazz Rock {UK})

Tonton Macoute - Tonton Macoute - 1971 (Wasabi Records, 2017 [front])

Eles começaram a se apresentar sob o nome Windmill, lançando três singles no selo da MCA - "Big Bertha/Hey drummer man" (julho de 1969), "Such sweet sorrow/I can fly" (janeiro de 1970), “Wilburs thing/Two’s company three’s a crowd” (março de 1970).

Nigel também ajudou a estabelecer The Cure e Pete Shelly.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tonton Macoute's story began in the summer of 1968, when drummer Nigel Reveler and keyboardist Paul French sought out musicians in Melody Maker magazine. The hearing of the newly created group took place and the reviews were very positive. For 18 months, the group performed at German clubs such as K52, Tor 10, Blow Up and Allied Airbases. By then, the group had included Chris Gavin (guitar, bass), Dave Knowles (wind).

Once, pop legend Dave Dee attended one of the shows and offered music management services in the person of Ken Havard and Alan Blakely, who managed to significantly advance the group. They began performing under the name Windmill, releasing three singles on the MCA label - "Big Bertha/Hey drummer man" (July 1969), "Such sweet sorrow/I can fly" (January 1970), "Wilburs thing/Two’s company three’s a crowd” (March 1970). However, the group was forced to suspend its activities after Scott died in a car crash in May 1970 in East Germany.

Back in England, the musicians tried to focus on the progressive jazz style and turned to Howard and Blakely to help sign the contract with Vertigo Records. This was successful, but after most of the company's employees moved to RCA Neon, the group was automatically transferred to the agency for the last time. After that, the group changed its name to Tonton Macoute (the name of Haitian dictator Papa Doc's brutal presidential guard). The team began performing in the student community and only then retired to the studio to record their debut album.

Eddie Offford was planned to be producing the record, but upon arriving at the studio, the musicians discovered that he had gone to America to work with Yes, so recording engineer Martin Rascent took over the recording. The self-titled album was released in mid-1971 almost simultaneously with Spring and Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath albums (both self-titled). However, despite the fact that Neon Records signed contracts and released the most interesting song of the early 1970s, the company soon struggled financially, which led to bankruptcy in 1972, leaving the group without the necessary funds to release the album. second album. Only 4 compositions were recorded in the studio, but none of them were released.

The bankruptcy of the company led to internal disagreements in the team: Paul French began a solo career, releasing several singles. He then formed the Voyager group and in 1979 released the album "Halfway Hotel". Paul French still works with music. Dave Knowles currently lives in Devon and sometimes performs at local clubs and pubs, while Chris Gavin teaches in Newbury. Nigel Reveler switched to session work with bands such as Snowstoppers and The Rockin Berries. At the same time, he collaborates with Polydor and Polygram Records, and also manages. Nigel also helped establish The Cure and Pete Shelly.
