Lift - Caverns of your brain - 1977 (Symphonic Progressive Rock {US})

Lift

A banda costumava começar seu show com a música da Genesis, "Watcher of the skies".

No verão de 1974, o produtor Sonny Fox colocou a Lift no estúdio e gravou quatro músicas: "Simplicity", "Caverns", "Buttercup boogie" e "Tripping over the rainbow".

Nada correu conforme o planejado.

Lift was formed in June 1972 by keyboardist Chip Gremillion, bassist Cody Kelleher and drummer Chip Grevemberg. Although everyone had worked together in numerous groups before, Lift was formed with the goal of being a progressive band from the south. Chris Young was added to the rhythm, 12-string and vocals guitar in the first month. Vocalist Courtenay Hilton-Green, from Pensacola Florida, who had previously worked with Gremillion and guitarist Richard Huxen, from New Orleans, joined in a few months. Chris Young left the group shortly after to pursue other interests, but not before writing the lyrics for "Simplicity" and co-writing the lyrics for "Caverns" with Chip Gremillion and Courtney Hilton-Green. In late autumn 1972, the five-member group, now made up of Gremillion, Kelleher, Grevemberg, Hilton-Green and Huxen, quickly began to build a strong following, even among the musicians in the area who used to be seen in the performances. Lift. Throughout 1973, the band continued to attract support from the public and local music critics. Lift has become a frequent highlight band in universities in the area for special events.

The performances of local clubs used to stand only with musicians and fans enjoying the show equally. Lift continued to cover increasingly large and complex pieces of progressive music. The band used to start their show with the Genesis song, "Watcher of the skies". Imagine the condition that this created in a southern audience in 1973. In addition to the standard southern bands, Lift did covers of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Uriah Heep, Robin Trower, ELP, Yes, King Crimson, The Moody Blues and, gradually, the band introduced original material as it was composed.

In the summer of 1974, producer Sonny Fox put Lift in the studio and recorded four songs: "Simplicity", "Caverns", "Buttercup boogie" and "Tripping over the rainbow". Most of the band members were barely 19 at the time. The band continued to perform in the New Orleans area and increased its popularity. Lift incorporated the recorded songs, as well as additional original material into his live sets. In late fall 1975, at Sonny Fox's suggestion, Lift moved to Atlanta.

THE ATLANTA YEARS (1975-1979)

From the beginning, Atlanta was a challenge. Nothing went according to plan. Just a few months after the move and based on material from the 1974 "Caverns" session, Lift went to Philadelphia to re-record modified versions of "Simplicity" and "Tripping over the rainbow", as well as a new instrumental song titled "To undulate rapidly". Lift drove from Atlanta to Philadelphia, edited, recorded and mixed the three songs without sleeping. The session was described by the producers as "very hot". Lift was involved in a short mixing session, heard a good reproduction of each song and returned to Atlanta with promises. To date, no one has ever received a copy of that session. The 1975-76 winter was tough for Atlanta and Lift. In early spring, bassist Cody Kelleher and vocalist Courtenay Hilton-Green left the group. The search for new musicians took almost 7 months. In the early fall of 1976, Laura "Poppy" Pate, a soprano voice teacher, responded to an ad posted at a local music store. She claimed to be looking for a student. After listening to the band's music, she immediately joined the group. In just a few weeks, a casual encounter between Chip Grevemberg, Mike Mitchell and Tony Vaughn in an apartment hall resulted in what can only be described as critical music mass! In less than six months of intense rehearsals, Lift added five new compositions to his catalog and completed the rearrangement of the material "Caverns" to better meet the new training of personnel.

Although there were no live performances, the band quickly won the respect of local musicians who attended rehearsals and also the curiosity of British music producer Michael Stewart. Working in the studio as a group and the rehearsals that followed made Lift develop a very strong "live" sound. A professional photography session was scheduled, A&R representatives from different record companies began to express interest and enthusiasm. Based on listening to the new material, the band was booked as the opening act of a major concert at the main Atlanta concert venue at the time, Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom. A&R people from up to four interested labels should be present. Lift was ready! Two weeks before the scheduled show, Poppy informed the group that he was leaving immediately for personal reasons. Shortly after Poppy's departure, Richard Huxen left the group. Over the next six months, Chip Gremillion, Mike Mitchell, Chip Grevemberg and Tony Vaugn invited several invited musicians to rehearse in an attempt to recreate Lift's capabilities, but to no avail. However, the remaining quartet soon realized that they were capable of producing a unique sound. In the remaining period, some of Lift's best materials were composed. Six to seven additional compositions were created: ironically, it was these songs that potentially had the greatest chance of commercial success. Lift broke up in February 1979.
