Hairetis-Harper - Draft - 2020 (Experimental/Psychedelic/World Music [Grécia/UK])

Hairetis-Harper - Draft - 2021

Returning to the dissemination of our contemporary artists, the blog today presents for those who already know and for those who still do not know, the excellent work of the duo Yiagos Hairetis (from Crete - lute, vocal) and Maria-Christina Harper (from London - harp) that, for the first time together, collaborated to produce a dynamic and unexpected duet. The duo brings together the traditional music of Crete and the London avant-garde jazz music scene. Master harpist Maria-Christina Harper and lute player Υiagos Hairetis create an original duo that combines the contemporary music scene of London with the musical tradition of Crete.

Hairetis-Harper has released their debut album "Draft" via Same Difference Music label (release date: 7 December 2020). The record is available on LP and digitally on all major platforms. The record was written a year after their initial musical acquaintance when their improvisations took the form of complete tracks and it was recorded at Suono Studio by Coti K. who also did the mastering and at the Music Art Lab by Nikos Asimakis. In the seven tracks of the record, the two musicians masterfully combine the sounds of the two instruments and their musical influences, approaching the Cretan tradition in many ways and creating their own distinct sound.

Yiagos Hairetis got involved in music at a very young age, picking up the lute and other traditional Cretan instruments. His upbringing in Anogia, Crete, home of legendary musicians of Cretan music like Psarantonis and Nikos Xylouris coincided with him listening to classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath which influenced him to develop his unique style of playing the lute.

Maria-Christina Harper is an award winning, London based, experimental electric harp player who creates compositions using loop, wah and distortion pedal effects. She is the first prize winner of the Wales International Harp Competition (2010) performing her own compositions on the electric harp.
Maria-Christina
studied the harp with an entrance scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.

The duo has appeared in prestigious venues and festivals in Greece and Europe. They toured Belgium and the Netherlands in October 2019 appearing in the historical venue Vera in Groningen, Worm in Rotterdam, Occi in Amsterdam and Art-base in Brussels.

Metropolis - Metropolis - 1974 (Krautrock/Progressive Rock [Alemanha])

Metropolis - Metropolis - 1974 (2022, Pan Records [front])

The core of Metropolis were keyboardist Manfred Opitz and bassist Michael Westphal, who already played together with Zarathustra. With Michael Sauber (saxophone), Tom Hildebrand (drums, percussion - formerly with the band Mythos) and Mickie Duwe (voice, guitar - Agitation Free, Ash Ra Tempel), the band started rehearsing in the already legendary Wrangel-Kaserne in Kreuzberg. Shortly thereafter, the band met Ute Kannenberg, also known to many as Tanja Berg, who was a regular guest with that name and at the time on the charts, but already wanting to say goodbye to the successful business. Michael Sauber, who would later work as a sound engineer (including Morgenrot), left the band after a short period of time. However, they all stayed together as a group on various stages for a long time. With guitarist Helmut Binzer (Professor Wolff) from Ulm, the program for the production of the planned LP was then elaborated in this formation.

Agitation Free recommended Studio 70 in Munich, in which the band recorded the lp "Metropolis" in December 1973. The album featured the participation of the Munich Philharmonic ensemble, under the direction of Hartmut Westphal, brother of the band's bassist, who arranged the strings for some tracks and conducted them in the studio.

Shortly after the album's release, which appeared on the newly founded Ariola/BMG label Pan, Ute Kannenberg (she joined Pecks is Food) and Helmut (he went to Munich) left the band. With the smaller cast, Metropolis developed a new program entitled "Kaleidoscope". Based on the story of science fiction author Ray Bradbury, they created a multimedia show with the usual projection techniques at the time (Alf Heuer) and lots of dry ice (and even olfactory ingredients!), Which debuted at the sold-out Kant cinema at Christmas 1975 This concert, initiated by the band, was, in fact, the first event of its kind that took place on Christmas Eve, deliberately placed at the end of the night so that gifts could be made in advance.

In addition to the concerts in Bonn (Underground and Beethovenhalle), Frankfurt aM (Sinkkasten), Hamburg (Grünspan) or Nuremberg (Komm-Zentrum), events also took place in Berlin, whether in the Mehringdamm hatch, in the Kant cinema, in the Quartier Latin or in the RIAS Studio 10. After a final show at Sommergarten unter dem Funkturm in the summer of 1976, the band members ended the project. Michael Duwe founded Albatros, the Berlin concert agency, and in 1978, together with Klaus Schulze, produced his first solo album "Mickie d's unicorn", released in 1979. Manfred Opitz was, among other things, the band's "mentor" Lilli Berlin in the 80s, playing with Stefan Waggershausen, George Kranz and Lüül. Michael Westphal was bassist for The OutsAsh Ra Tempel, Group 66, among others. Ute Kannenberg sang alongside his solo projects with the jazz-rock formation of Os Mundi and later returned with Manfred Opitz, Micky Westphal and Tom Hildebrand in the band Tequila Sunrise.

Scope (Progressive Jazz Fusion Rock [Países Baixos])

Scope

HISTORY

Scope's predecessor band was called Strange Power and was founded around 1969 in Zwolle, Netherlands. Rik Elings, Henk Zomer (drums) and bassist Erik Raayman founded the fusion project and had already released a 7 "single (which was added to Scope's first CD as a bonus). With guitarist Rens Nieuwland in 1972, Strange Power became Scope, the Dutch jazz rock quartet subsequently made a name for themselves in Netherlands and Germany, a WEA/Atlantic talent scout met the band and hired them for their record label.

In 1973, the band entered Hamburg's Maschen studio to record their debut album "Scope" under the direction of Jochen Petersen. The result was an exciting and varied fusion/jazz-rock album, which contained many improvisations and perfectly reflected the skill of the four musicians. The press was excited and Scope took to the streets to present the new album live.

In 1974, Erik Raayman left the band, but the band continued with a surprising plan. Multi-instrumentalist Rik Elings left his place behind the keyboards for Rob Franken and took charge of the four strings. A wise decision, because Rob Franken was one of the best and most famous jazz pianists in the Netherlands. With this formation, they returned to Studio Maschen in September 1974 to record the next album, "Scope II", for WEA. Like the debut, the album is a unique and delicate funk/fusion album, and Scope has become a true insider of the international jazz rock scene. Despite (or because of) the big deal, big record sales didn't happen. After numerous changes in formation, the band came to an end in 1976.

Náttúra - Magic key - 1972 (Psychedelic/Progressive Rock [Islândia])

Mais uma reedição de 2020.
Desfrutem!

STORY

The band Náttúra worked during the times of the hippie and prog era, around the end of the 60s and after the beginning of the 1970s. It was one of the most popular and ambitious bands of the time and released an album that today is considered one of the treasures of the history of Icelandic music. At the time when Náttúra was founded, there was a great growth and rebirth in the life of Icelandic rock, the primitive beat took over and more advanced experiments became more and more common. The spring of 1969 was specifically mentioned in this context, but then apostasy and nature emerged. The founding members of Náttúra were drummer Rafn Haraldsson and singer and flutist Jónas R. Jónsson who came from Flowers, bassist Sigurður Árnason (Sálin) and guitarist Björgvin Gíslason (Pops).

The band first appeared in July 1969 and later played mainly blues rock from bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jethro Tull and similar bands, but soon started to perform more with the original composition. However, they attracted a lot of attention for presenting an excerpt from the musical "Tommy", which they performed, for example, on a TV show. At the end of the summer, the news came that a two-track album with the band was about to come out and that a song had been recorded for the compilation "Pop Festival 70", which was about to come out at the time. In the early 1970s, Náttúra had made an album contract with Fálkann, but another label had also asked for an agreement with the band, which had joined the group of the main bands in the country. The band soon recorded the original songs "Blekking" and "Þú hverfa munt mer", but these songs were never released for any reason, and also because singer Jónas unexpectedly left the band in the early spring. He had recently been elected pop star of the year 1970, so it was a surprise to the pop world when he announced his departure, allegedly to run a men's clothing store he was about to open. However, Jónas was not in danger with the music, as he had recently signed an album publishing contract for solo material.

When the compilation album "Pop Festival 70" was finally released after some delays, the contribution of Náttúra's first formation was nowhere to be found. Just a song with Jónas alone. These members did not find the song well done and Jónas ended up singing a song with foreign accompaniment. As the album cover was printed long before the edition arrived in Iceland, the name of the band was on it. Jónas was replaced by singer Pétur W. Kristjánsson, who had previously been in the band Pops, as well as guitarist Björgvin. At the same time, organist Sigurður Rúnar Jónsson joined the group, his main characteristics as an instrumentalist were mainly diversity, but he played most of the instruments - the violin was one of these. Sigurður Rúnar was there in his father's band, Hljómsveit Jóns Sigurðssonar, who played music in the spirit of ancient dances and this was the first time he went to a pop-rock band.

Náttúra played during the summer and, despite the heavy and very tumultuous programming, the band enjoyed great popularity. In the fall it was reported that the band had started to rehearse material for an entire album - all original material. At that time, Náttúra was touring the Faroe Islands, but Pétur had roots there, that trip did not materialize. But on the other hand, another major project appeared in the late 1970s for the band, when it was offered to play in the musical "Hárin" that would be staged in Kópavogsbíó. It was later decided that the work would be shown at the Glaumbær club by Fríkirkjuvegur. Soon after the turn of the year 1970-71, Ólafur Garðarsson, drummer, joined the band in Rafn's place, but he was already in TrúbrotNáttúra was more news in the following weeks, when it was revealed that the band had not received Ríkissjónvarpi's approval to play the works of Grieg and Bach on a TV program in which they were invited to participate, which resulted in a lot of journalism, especially after the band called a press conference and threw the material there. People were especially informed about the power that composer Jón Þórarinsson had within the institution, but he was then the musical director of Ríkisútvarp and it seems that only one had decided whether the band could play the material. It is worth mentioning that Náttúra did not change the arrangements of the song, but played it on an electric instrument that probably went through the musical director's chest. The case went so far that the signatures of hundreds of high school students were handed over to the music director, who did not give up. Therefore, nothing resulted from the production of the TV show. Náttúra, however, did not stop performing works by composers and, in parallel to the musical performance in Hárinn in Glaumbær, a collaboration with composer Leif Þórarinsson began in the band's experiences with the rock-hippie form. The band performed works by and with Leifur in nature-related entertainment in February 1971, as well as the aforementioned works by Grieg and Bach, and shortly afterwards Leifur went with them to the Faroe Islands and transported the material there. In addition, the band recorded a composition by another young composer, Atli Heimi Sveinsson.

In the fall of 1971, news came that the band had received a draft contract for the release of an album from CBS and Polydor. These members looked a little more at things, but nothing resulted from those plans. Turbulence and personnel changes characterized Náttúra for a while, it was said that drummer Ólafur was leaving and that it looked like Timi Donald from the British band White Trash was going to take his place. Sigurður Rúnar then decided to leave the band, although it was not until after the turn of the year 1971-72, but a new member joined the group when percussionist Áskell Másson joined NáttúraNáttúra took a short break in December 1971 while these issues were being cleared up, but anger increased when a big fire broke out in Glaumbær on December 4 and all of the band's instruments were destroyed. Insurance matters were not read and the team probably never received compensation for damages. The band did not stop working with this shock, Sigurður Rúnar left at the turn of the year as had been decided, but in addition, the singer Pétur left the band and founded
Svanfríður as a result. Pétur was replaced by Jóhann G. Jóhannsson as a singer and guitarist, but he then worked with bands like Óðmönnar (the first) and Tötur. Ólafur Garðarsson continued as a drummer in Náttúra, despite rumors to the contrary. To everyone's surprise, a new member of Náttúra appeared when the band returned to the scene in February 1972 after the break, and was vocalist Shady Owens. The band members were Björgvin Gíslason, Sigurður Árnason, Ólafur Garðarsson, Jóhann G. Jóhannsson, Áskell Másson and Shady Owens, and it was now widely said among pop writers that the band and Svanfríður were probably the best bands and leaders in Iceland, although were sought elsewhere.

During the summer, the band played at occasional concerts, and at the same time rehearsed original material on an album that was recorded in the fall of 1972 in London. Jóhann G. then left Náttúra and Áskell also left the band. Organist Karl J. Sighvatsson played a small part in the recordings and played with the band for a short time during the winter, along with guitarist Finnur Torfi Stefánsson, and according to the story, Tómas M. Tómasson released bassist Sigurður for a while. People were quick to get things done at this time and before Christmas 1972 the album "Magic key" was released, but the band took care of the release. The album was well received, received decent reviews in Tínminn and excellent in Poppbók Jens Kr. Guðmundsson, Vikunn and Morgunblaðið, but it sold very badly and there were some losses in the publication. To some extent, heavy music may have probably been to blame, but when the album was finally released, progressive and hippie rock gave way to lighter music, which was often called "gum music" and probably would have been defined more afternoon as "happy pop". It was compared to bands like Lónlí blú bojs and Haukur, in Iceland. Many people say that Náttúra released the album too late. In recent years, however, the album has been bought and sold for large sums, as copies of it are rare. After Hárinn's experience, it was considered common and natural to look for Náttúra when the rock opera "Jesus Crist Superstar" was to be performed in Austurbæjarbíó, but the work enjoyed great popularity after it was first performed in 1970. In Iceland it was called "Jesús guð dýrðlingur" and premiered in early 1973, a companion to the band was the pianist Pétur Pétursson.

Náttúra played at the show until the end of May, but as a result there was little demand for the band. It was then, somewhat unexpected in the summer, that a new band was introduced, Pelican, but Björgvin Gíslason and Pétur Kristjáns (the band's former singer) were at the forefront of the group. This band would become the vanguard of the Icelandic music scene in the following years, and with that the history of Náttúra ended at the same time. However, the band would meet a year later and play in public. And, in fact, again at the anniversary concert of the Association of Icelandic Musicians, in 1982. These concerts were recorded and the material was released on an album, where Náttúra enters the scene in a song composed by bassist Sigurður, keyboardist Sigurður Rúnar, the singer Pétur, the drummer of Ólafur and the guitarist of Björgvin.

Náttúra's album, "Magic key" was never released on CD or digital format and therefore has been unavailable for a long time. And as incredible as it may seem, a song with the band has never been released on compilation albums in recent times (until the time this text was written).
