Exodus (Symphonic Progressive Rock {Polônia})

Exodus (Polish band [01])

The last touring theatre" ("Ostatni teatrzyk objazdowy", 1980).

O vídeo desse show é apresentado no DVD "A ray of sunshine".

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is considered by many to be the best progressive rock
band in Poland and came to be called "Polish Yes".
Below is a bit of its history and its albums that were released
in box-set format in 2006 by Metal Mind Productions label.

Story

Exodus was formed out of the band Źródło, which was a hard rock band founded by students Andrzej Puczyński (guitar) and his brother Wojciech (bass), in the fall of 1976 in Warsaw, at the club Riviera-Remont. In 1976/77, they started to have the support of Władysław Komendarek (keyboards) and Jerzy Machnikowski (drums), who soon left for Krzak to be replaced by Zbigniew Fyk. The band was also accompanied by Paweł Birula (vocals). At Andrzej Poniatowski's house, the group recorded the suite "Nadzieje, niepokoje", and then prepared a professional stage program, giving more than a dozen shows in various Polish cities. The first public performance took place in December 1977, during the Polish Stage Fair (Polskie Targi Estradowe) in Łódź. The band participated in several other musical events, including: International Spring Internship (Międzynarodowa Wiosna Estradowa) in Poznań (1978-1979), Pop Session in Sopot (1978) and Muzyczny Camping in Lubań (1979). She also toured with the British band The Rubettes on their Polish and overseas tour (USSR, West Germany and, a little later, Hungary).

In 1978, his first single was released - with the songs "Uspokojenie wieczorne" and "To, co pamiętam". The single brought two compositions with cantilena melodies, which are compared to Genesis or Yes, highlighting 12-string guitars, many revision arrangements (in the vein of Gabriel's Genesis) and Paweł Birula's "angelic voice" (similar to that of Jon Anderson). But it was immediately apparent that the band was building its own unique style, and that a certain eclecticism, so popular with progressive bands, was anything but exceptional.

The originality of Exodus' sound was the result of very different musical origins of the members of the band Paweł Birula used to work at the Krakow STU theater - the Puczyński brothers come from the hard rock environment and Włodyslow Komendarek's synthesizers enriched the music with electronics. Exodus' compositions were filled with intriguing rhythmic and melodic solutions, overlapping themes, allusions to classical or even folk music. The whole was completed with poetic lyrics, written mainly by A. Puczyński, but also by Wojciech Sodoś and Małgorzata Maliszewska.

In the beginning, Exodus played longer suites, which allowed more freedom. His first live set-lists were based on very long compositions, of which only fragments were recorded for the first singles. In 1979, the band's second single was released: "Dotyk szczęścia/Niedokończony sen".

Exodus prepared music for various performances, the most popular of which were: "Nadzieje, niepoje" (1977), an art and ballet performance called "Maski" (1979) and "The last touring theater" ("Ostatni teatrzyk objazdowy", 1980) . The last two were filmed and presented by the TVP TV channel, but the tapes with the performances were deleted. Only a fragment of one of the programs ("Nadzieje, niepokoje") survived, and was used in the TV movie "The mouse".

Along with the Krakow group Skaldowie, the group also participated in the TV ballet performance "Magic journey" ("Podróż magiczna", 1979) directed by A. Wasylewski. The band was also part of the musical movement called Young Generation Music. With Kombi and Krzak, Exodus quickly became the top of YGM. These three bands were featured on the cassette tape "Young Generation Music" released in 1979.

This first serious recording session brought many interesting songs, which were often performed live at that time. They were also played on Polish radio, but it was the first time that the entire session was being presented. The highlights of the session are definitely the three long suites: "Nadzieje, niepokoje", "Oda do nadziei" and the instrumental composition "Gonitwa myśli". The letters, written mainly by the leader's hands, were about the most important values of human life.

Exodus' live performances were very different from their studio recordings. The musicians explained that, although the type of music they played required precise arrangements, they would not follow them all the time.

In 1980, the band participated in Rockin Jamboree. The video for this show is presented on the DVD "A ray of sunshine". Still in 1980, Exodus released the album "The most beautiful day" ("Ten najpiękniejszy dzień"), which turned out to be a great commercial success, reaching the status of "gold album" (200,000 copies sold). In the same year, Exodus received the title of a band whose recordings were the most anticipated by readers of Non Stop magazine. Exodus has also made several music videos for the TV charts. At the turn of 1981 to 1982, the second LP, "Supernova", was recorded and released, containing shorter songs in an attempt to keep up with new musical trends (its ad was released in 1981 on the single "Jestem automatem/Najdłuższy lot", the fifth of the band).

In 1983, Exodus began cooperation with Marek Wójcicki, considered the fastest Polish guitarist. Together, they recorded the album "Hazard", which was released for the first time in 2006. A year later, the team split up and the lineup was reorganized. At the turn of 1985 to 1986, attempts were made to continue operations under the name of MadMax. The only traces of the work of this group are three recordings recorded by Polish radio Białystok and a video clip for the song entitled "Atak serca".

After leaving the band, Władysław Komendarek started a solo career, and Andrzej Puczyński - after the dissolution of Exodus/MadMax - founded the label Izabelin. He is currently the president of Universal Music Polska.

In 1992, the album "Exodus: Singles collection" (CD, Izabelin) was released, bringing together all the singles of the band, including the tracks sung by Kazimierz Barlasz ("Kosmiczny ojcze", "Ta frajda") which, after his short contribution to Exodus, migrated to the band Cytrus.

In 2006, the Metal Mind Productions label released a box-set with all the band's work, including all the singles and the albums "Nadzieje, niepokoje" (recorded in 1977) and "Hazard" (recorded in 1983), both never before released.
