Osanna (Progressive Rock {Itália})

Osanna (1)
Osanna foi um dos grupos
italianos mais representativos
do rock progressivo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Osanna was one of
the most representative Italian
progressive rock groups
of the 1970s.

HISTORY

One of the biggest groups of the Italian progressive, Osanna originated in the Vomero district (Naples, Italy) in 1971, from the former members of the bands I Volti di Pietra and Città Frontale. Aerophonist Elio D'Anna came from Showmen, and bassist Lello Brandi, from the first formation of the band Città Frontale. The others didn't have significant musical experiences.

During the four years of his career, Osanna did not manage to create, as has been highlighted by so many critics, the perfect album, but he left four beautiful LPs, among which "Palepoli" deserves a particular mention.

"L'uomo", the first album, published with the famous cover that opened in three parts, contains all the characteristic elements: the beautiful voice of Lino Vairetti, with interesting lyrics, the aggressive flute of Elio D'Anna, the fluid guitar style by Danilo Rustici and solid rhythm section by Lello Brandi and Massimo Guarino.

The group played a lot live, taking particular care of the scenography. Osanna was one of the first bands in the world to perform theatrically at their shows, endorsing long robes and made-up faces. Collaboration with theater groups produced very interesting and unique performances for the Italian audience. The group also played with Genesis on their first Italian tour.

In June 1971, Osanna won Viareggio's Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia e di Nuove Tendenze, along with Premiata Forneria Marconi and Mia Martini.

The second album, "Preludio, theme, variazioni, canzona", also known as "Milano calibro 9", which was the soundtrack of the film, is of a lower level, with few compositions by the group interspersed with orchestral themes by Luiz Bacalov. Some of the songs are, however, very beautiful, like the first three "Variazioni".

The third album, certainly the best, "Palepoli", from 1973, makes the group reach the peak of its own creativity. The disc contains only three long songs and contains a beautiful opening cover, whose internal photo is based on scenes used in live performances. The opening song, "Oro caldo", unites the typical style of the group with traditional songs from their city. While "Stanza città" and "Animale senza respiro", they give space to the musicians' instrumental skill. For many specialists, this is one of the best records in the Italian progressive scene.

Unfortunately, the relationships between some of the components led to the band's dissolution during the recordings of "Landscape of life", producing a rather fickle album. With a splendid cover designed by drummer Massimo Guarino, and an interior painting by singer Lino Vairetti - some of the components came from artistic studies and later also had a career in this direction -, the album contains some good songs, but suffers from a lack of a real group.

At that time, Osanna was trying to play abroad, and the album should have also been released on the market in other countries. Thus, five of the seven songs are sung in English, but because of the dissolution the recordings were completed with the help of Corrado Rustici, younger brother of Danilo and former Cervello member, as well as drummer Enzo Vallicelli, who later joined the band Uno.

Danilo Rustici and Elio D'Anna, with drummer Vallicelli, moved to England to form Uno, while Lino Vairetti and Massimo Guarino gave new life to the old group Città Frontale, this time with new musicians by publishing, in 1975, the album "El Tor".

Things didn't go well for the two groups, however, and Osanna reunited in 1977 with the addition of Enzo Petrone (who had played with Lino Vairetti in the group Volti di Pietra and later with Moby Dick), as well as Fabrizio D'Angelo. But the resulting album from this new lineup, "Suddance", is a far cry from the band's best days. The band broke up in 1979. After this last breakup, Danilo Rustici formed Luna.

REFORM

Osanna was reformed in 1999, releasing the LP "Taka boom, Afrakà" in 2001, including old hits and some new songs.

Their next production is an interesting CD with a DVD distributed by the BTF and based on the December 2001 reunion concert, not 2003 as it is written on the cover, and it also comprises four new studio recordings: "Live - Uomini e miti".

Osanna's latest line-up includes Danilo Rustici and Lino Vairetti along with Enzo Petrone from the 1977 line-up and new Gennaro Barba (drums), Gigi Borgogno (guitar), Luca Urciuolo (keyboards) and Vito Ranucci (sax). The sound of the new Osanna is much more funky and also the old songs resent new arrangements in this genre.

In 2008, the group released a CD-single with two old songs rearranged with more modern sounds, "L'uomo" and "A zingara". Van Der Graaf Generator saxophonist David Jackson joined the band for the concerts. With this line-up, after several concerts, the new album "Prog family" was released at the end of 2008, containing re-recordings of old songs and a version of "Theme one" by Van der Graaf Generator. The album features notable figures from the history of progressive rock, such as Van der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Il Balletto di Bronzo and others.

BEYOND OSANNA

Some members of the group have had an artistic career in other fields. Lino Vairetti, for example, was an appreciated painter and made the splendid cover of the only 1975 album by Tempo di Percussione.
