Cirkel - The first goodbye - 1983 (Progressive Rock {Países Baixos})

Cirkel - The first goodbye - 1983

Quem sabe, talvez eles voltem a dar concertos.

Cirkel, como o nome sugere, é provavelmente eterno.

HISTORY

The history of Cirkel begins in 1974 in Leerdam, Holland, when Hans den Hartog (born in 20/04/1951) formed the group Yarga, together with his brother Gerrie den Hartog, Aart Lagewaard and Bram Schaaij.

Their initial musical attempts were inspired by bands like Fleetwood Mac. Those early years were not easy, with many line-up changes and the constant search for a more distinctive musical direction. Then the group changed its name to Cirkel (Dutch for "circle"), selected because it symbolised the "everlasting - no beginning, no end".

By 1975 there was a consistent line-up with Hans den Hartog on guitar, Gerrie den Hartog also on guitar, Nino Janseen on bass guitar, Charl Augustijn on drums, Bram Schaaij on vocals and Willem Boet on keyboards. All the members had different musical backgrounds, varying from hard-rock to blues. None of them had any real musical training, but by dint of sheer hard work, they created a symphonic rock style with influences from UFO, Camel, Led Zeppelin, Crack the Sky and Genesis. The band insisted on playing only self-written material - Hans wrote the bulk of the basic themes which were worked out, reconstructed and rearranged in rehearsal by the whole group. Most of the lyrics in the early days were written by Aart in English, as this better suited the shape of the group's melodies than Dutch- although Ad STruijk took over this task later on when he joined the band in 1982. This composition method, by the way, is still used by the members of Cirkel to this day!

Their hard work was rewarded in 1976 when the band was asked to contribute two songs, "Bats are flying" and "Circle' to a Dutch "various-artists" album entitled "Symfosium". After several shows in Holland to promote the album fate struck again when three members decided to leave the band to start other projects. Gerrie started the successful hard-rock band Gilgamesh (not to be confused with Alan Gowen's Canterbury-styled fusion band!), Bram joined the symphonic rock band Caught in the Act and Willem stopped playing music to concentrate on his professional career.

The remaining members, Hans and Charl, still kept their enthusiasm and asked the very talented bass player Hennie van Mourik (born in 07/05/1957) to join them together with their old friend Aart Lagewaard (vocals) and Rien Varwaater (guitar). With Hans switching from guitar to keyboards, Cirkel were now ambitious as never before.

Through the talents of the new members, the music became more complex. Aart, inspired by Peter Gabriel, came up with the idea of a concept-show based on the legend of "Tristan and Isolde" - new songs, among them titles like "Elfin" were recorded for a demo-tape with a view to making an album.

To make their shows more attractive for the audience, a huge screen was set up behind the band when they played live - on to this screen were projected more than 400 slides during each show. This enterprise was quite successful, with concerts all over Holland.

Now, everything was working out nicely, and the plans for the long-awaited album were becoming more concrete. But as record companies weren't that keen of symphonic music in 1982, the band decided to finance the whole project themselves and release the album on their own label.

Then when everything was ready, the studio booked and the songs selected for the sessions, Aart suddenly decided that his career as an artist was more important than music and he quit- it was now August '82. This sudden departure had such an impact on Charl and Rien that they lost faith in the band and also decided to leave.

Many people, including the music press, thought that this would be curtains for the band, but Hans and Hennie were determined to make that album and started to audition for a new drummer and guitarist.

That same August, 1982, Ad Struik (born in 06/08/1958) joined Cirkel. His background was slightly different to the others - he started playing in 1977 as a member of the jazz-rock band Invisible Opera while simultaneously employed with the symphonic rock band Caught in the Act.

With this latter group he made the 16-track cassette- only album "Displaced". Then in 1980 he joined Amsterdam avant-garders Divorce, to make the album "Home comfort" and, in 1982, the single "Friends and celibraties", following a three week tour with the English band This Heat. His influences (Brand X, Gong, Phil Collins) helped open up and clarify the Cirkel sound. After several auditions, however, a suitable guitar player had still not been found, so the group decided to make use of a freelance musician for the album.

The recordings of "The first goodbye" (named after one of the album tracks) started Monday 3rd January 1983 and lasted until 7th January followed by more sessions berween 2ist and 28th February 1983. These two weeck long sessions were really too short a time to record the album adequately but as the group self-produced the disc, it wasn't possible to afford more studio time.

Also, it wasn't simple to record in quick time at such a highly sophisticated and professional studio as the Ballad Sound Studio (Vuren, Holland) which the band chose. For the basic tracks producer Peter Vink (ex-bassist with Q65 and Finch) was hired. The final production was done by sound engineer Jaap Brunner and Cirkel.

The songs which were recorded had been extensively rehearsed for many months but with Rien's departure the band had to call on freelance help. Chris Van Hoogdalen, ex-member of the group Alpha was recruited temporarily. He had much impressed the band with the quality of his playing and his ability to 'pick up' their songs quickly.

Eight tracks were recorded were recorded and mixed in those fourteen days, and although it was a race against the clock, everyone was very happy with the final product. As mentioned previously, the finance for the project came from the band, the costs totalling around 40,000 Francs (£ 4000). Now that the recording was finished and the album cover ready (this was painted by the artist Erik de Jong, inspired by the bird in the Cirkel logo), CBS Holland pressed 1200 copies of the LP.

The official release was on 29th April 1983 in Gorinchem, followed by a short promo tour (15/05/1983, 22/05/1983, 29/05/1983, 10/06/1983, 02/07/1983). The album picked up a good notice in the leading Dutch music magazine OOR, and the regional newspaper seemed very impressed also. After some air play on Dutch radio the sales went comparatively well. Boudisque-export in Amsterdam sold 200 copies in two weeks, mainly to Germany and Japan. After six months 700 more copies had been sold and in 1989 a German company bought up 200 more.

After the promotional tour, with Chris van Hoodalem still depping as guitar-player, a permanent guitarist joined the band - Ron Beenen, a classically- trained musician. With him the band concentrated on writing new material and in May 1984 two of these songs ("The prisoner" and "Wishing") were recorded in the Ballad Sound Studios with Jaap Brunner and Cirkel once again doing production honours. By now the music, mainly due to the influence of Ron and Ad, had changed its emphasis to shorter, more direct songs - also, the lyrics changed, eschewing fairy-tale landscapes for more down-to-earth subjects.

The two newly-recorded songs were sent to almost every record company in Holland but unfortunately none of them was interested. Because of this and the departure of guitarist Ron Beenen the band decided, in May 1985, to (provisionally) play their last concert and take a break. None of the members stopped playing, however Hans formed a blues-rock band called Friends, in which he still plays today. Since September '91 he has been joined by Ad Struijk who, after Cirkel, played in several bands including a two-year stint with the Rotterdam blues-rock band Mickey's Paper Heroes. Hennie van Mourik started playing in the power-rock band Key Largo, who did very well and even started to record an album which was unfortunately and for several reasons never released.

Officially Cirkel has never split up and once a year Hans, Hennie and Ad come together to write songs. Who knows, maybe they'll start giving concerts again.

Cirkel, as the name suggests, is probably everlasting.
