O Planeta Selvagem [La Planète Sauvage] - 1973 (Film/DVD)

O Planeta Selvagem - 1973 (front)

Aqui, mantive a tradução correta do tema.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"The Savage Planet" is a 1973 French animated science fiction film directed by René Laloux. The screenplay is loosely based on Stefan Wul's serialized novel "Oms en Série". Restoration of the film was carried out in 2016 with the support of CNC. The film was originally translated into the English and Portuguese languages as "Fantastic Planet" and "Planeta Fantástico", respectively. Here, I kept the correct translation of the theme.

A working title emerged during development, "Sur la Planète Ygam", which is where most of the story takes place. The actual title, "The Savage Planet", is the name of Ygam's moon. Production began in 1963. The premiere of the film took place on May 11, 1973. "The Savage Planet" received the Grand Prix Special Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2016, it was ranked the 36th greatest animated film of all time by Rolling Stone.

SYNOPSIS

In the distant future, the Draags (in the English and Portuguese versions the spelling used was Traags), gigantic blue humanoids, bring human beings from Earth to the planet Ygam, where they maintain a technologically and spiritually advanced society. Human beings are called Oms, as a pun on the French word for "man": homme. The Draag consider the Oms to be animals, and while they keep some as pets, others live in the desert and are periodically slaughtered by the Draag to control their population. Draags have a much longer lifespan than Oms, but reproduce much less.

When an Om mother is tortured to death by three Draag children, her orphaned son is found by Master Sinh, an important Draag leader, and his daughter Tiwa, who keeps the boy as a pet and names him Terr. Tiwa loves Terr and is careful not to hurt him. But according to the instructions of her parents, she puts a collar on him, with which she can control him, moving him in any direction. She takes Terr to sessions in which she receives his education wearing an earpiece that transmits knowledge into his mind. A defect in Terr's collar allows him to gain the knowledge as well. By the time Tiwa reaches adolescence and performs Draag Meditation for the first time, which allows the species to travel with their minds, she loses interest in Terr, who has become a teenager and has acquired a lot of Draag knowledge. Terr runs away to the desert, stealing Tiwa's headset.

There, he meets a wild female Om, who cuts his collar and introduces him to her tribe, who live in a park abandoned by the Draag, full of strange creatures and landscapes. Terr shows them how to use the headset to gain Draag knowledge and literacy, earning the right to do so in a duel. The literacy they gain allows them to read a Draag announcement that the park will be "desomized" from Oms, and when desomization arrives, some will be slaughtered by Draag technology while others will escape, joining forces with another tribe. They are attacked by two walking Draag, and manage to kill one of them before escaping into an abandoned Draag rocket depot, much to the outrage of the Draag leaders.

They live there for years, joined by many other Oms. Due to the knowledge gained from Terr's headset, they are able to replicate Draag technology, including two rockets: they hope to leave Ygam for its moon, the Savage Planet, and live there safe from the Draags. When a large Draag purge hits the warehouse and many Oms are slaughtered, a group led by Terr uses the rockets to escape to the Savage Planet, where they discover large statues that the Draag travel to during meditation and use to find beings from other worlds. galaxies in a strange mating ritual that maintains their species. The Oms destroy some of the statues, threatening the Draags' existence. The Oms genocide is stopped in Ygam and, faced with a crisis, the Draags negotiate peace. The Oms agree to leave the Savage Planet to the Draags for their Meditations, and in return an artificial satellite is placed in orbit around Ygam and given to the Oms as a new home. This ushers in an era of peaceful coexistence between the two species, who now benefit from each other's way of thinking.

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

The film is one of the first examples of European animation for an adult audience and, at the same time, the first complete cartoon filmed by a French director. He openly polemicizes with the Walt Disney tradition, including animation technique: in contrast to Disney's cartoon animation, "The Savage Planet" is made in the technique of "cut-out" (paper cutting and replacement during filming of the elements of the figures), more constrained in the plasticity of movement, but much richer in details and colors. This process allowed Topor to pencil each scene in the film, giving it pastel tones that were unusual in animation at the time. 25 people worked for three and a half years to create the film's 1073 shots.

"The Savage Planet" is a poetic adaptation of Stefan Wul's novel, "Oms en série", depicting humans reduced to the status of mascots for gigantic Draags. Laloux stages a reflection on intelligence, society, politics and human nature. However, the film takes some liberties with the original work. Two points should be particularly noted:

  • In the film, the Oms decide to travel to the planet's natural satellite aboard rockets, while in the book they reach an uninhabited continent using boats.

  • Above all, the Draags' meditation, a key element of the film and its denouement, is absent from the novel. While the film describes Oms able to defeat the Draags by destroying the alien vessels of their meditating spirits (a pure creation of the film's writers), the novel simply describes a ferocious defense of the Oms against the military attacks of the Draags that allows, by a final bluff, negotiate a peace treaty.

SOUNDTRACK AND AUTHOR

A great highlight of this excellent work is its soundtrack, largely inspired by the musical movement of the time, in particular, progressive rock. However, the score also features several passages that carry strong jazz, psychedelia and waltz influences.

The film's soundtrack was composed by Alain Goraguer (born 20 August 1931), a French jazz pianist, arranger and composer. Among other artists, he has worked with Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Ferrat, Serge Reggiani and Nana Mouskouri. He also composed for other films such as "La vie de bohème" (1992), "Deux jours à tuer" (2008) and "Saint Laurent" (2014). Alain Goraguer died on February 13, 2023, aged 91.

The film's soundtrack has been compared to Pink Floyd's "Atom heart mother suite" for having the "same intermission, mellotron, harpsichord and wah-wah guitar". The track would also be sampled by some hip-hop artists.

The soundtrack was originally pressed on vinyl in the mid-70s in France. These original prints are expensive on the secondary market due to their limited release. In 2000, DC Recordings released the track in CD format, and it was later reissued in LP format.

AWARDS AND HONORS

"The Savage Planet" won the Special Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and the Saint-Michel Prize in Brussels in 1974. It won the international jury prize at the Trieste festival, the grand prize for animated film with gold medal at the Atlanta festival and was also crowned at the Tehran festival.

ANALYSIS

"The Savage Planet" has varying degrees of reading. It carries a political message of peace between different peoples, but also an ecological one. For Olivier Père, it is "a political allegory on the themes of slavery and revolt, civilization and barbarism, a fable where Swift, Spartacus and the pogroms of Central Europe intersect".
