Oriental Wind - Life road - 1983 (Jazz Fusion {Turquia})

Oriental Wind - Life road - 1983 (front)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Oriental Wind is a Turkish jazz fusion group formed by percussionist Okay Temiz: often described as Turkey's leading jazz and fusion musician. Okay Temiz first learned Turkish music from his mother, an accomplished musician, at home in Ankara, Capital of Türkiye. He studied classical percussion and timpani and began playing professionally in 1955. He appeared with the Don Cherry Trio in Scandinavia, other European cities and in the USA from 1969 to 1972.

In 1974, Okay Temiz formed his group Oriental Wind. Over the next decade, Okay Temiz brought some of Turkey's finest classical and folk musicians to the West. Among them: Binali Selman (zurna), Saffet Gundeger (clarinet), Salih Baysal (violin), Aka Gunduz (ney) and Burhan O¢al (percussion, saz).

In 1980, Okay Temiz crossed paths with Ilpo Saastamoinen and Pekka Nylund, members of the Finnish bands Piirpauke and Pohjantahti, in India. Piirpauke and Temiz's group Oriental Wind performed at the Jazz-Yatra Festival in Mumbai, where Temiz appeared as a guest of Piirpauke.

"Life road", the fifth album of this incredible project, was recorded in October 1983 in Stockholm, being the first studio production by Oriental Wind in Germany. JA&RO Records had already issued two live albums, "Live in the Balver Hohle" in 1980 and "Live in Bremen" in 1981.

On "Life road", Oriental Wind presents a fiery brand of Turkish folk beat with a flavor of Africa. The impression made by this dynamic ensemble as they develop their magical folk melodies is incisive. The enchanting repertoire of swinging lyrical improvisations is heightened by the instrumental variety of different saxophones, flutes, piano and all kinds of drums. The tight flexibility of the 9/8 and 7/8 rhythm against the driving bass and Okay Temiz's shimmering drums give the song a warm, rippling momentum. Their momentum is unstoppable, and exotic instruments like the berimbau, finger piano tavil and talking drum add to the group's mysterious impact.

In March 1986, Okay Temiz performed and taught at the Forgotten Musical Cultures seminar. At the same time, the line-up of Okay Temiz & Pohjantahti made their first Finnish tour, featuring Okay Temiz, Saastamoinen, Seppo Heikkonen and Pekka Nylund. At the end of the tour, they made a radio recording at the Finnish broadcasting company Yle's M1 studio.

There was another Finnish tour in 1988 with new repertoire and Åberg on woodwinds. That tour also ended with a recording for Yle. Oriental Wind has performed extensively, playing shows and festivals across Europe, Turkey and India.
