Los Tijuana Five & Apocalipsis (Beat/Psychedelic Rock {México})

Los Tijuana Five was a group that had its
origins in Tijuana, Baja California, as the
name implies. It was also from there that
the band Apocalipsis was formed.

STORY

In the midst of several Mexican groups, such as Los Hitters, Rocking Devils, Belmonts, Johnny Jets, Yaki and others, who were dedicated to interpreting English and American Spanish covers, Los Tijuana Five also decided to do the same, but in English and identical to the original songs. The band Dug Dug's, in their beginning, did something similar.

When Los Tijuana Five disappeared, Love Army was formed and, later, Los Tijuana Five members were part of Apocalipsis, Naftalina and other groups. Alberto Pájaro Isiordia, formed the group Sacrosaurio and recorded the album "Viaje fantástico".

In the second half of the sixties, the group started to gain recognition for its precise interpretations of the songs in English of groups of the called "British invasion". It was common to see crowds in places like Flamingo's Drive or Mike's a Go Go, when the band's performances were announced. After playing on the television show "El club de las estrellas", they caught the attention of Discos Capitol, with whom they recorded their first and only self-titled album in 1967.

The song "Dime" was the most popular on radio at the time. Fernando Vahauks played drums on the album, formally joining the group since Jorge Luján left the band. That same year, two EPs with songs from the LP were released: "Los Tijuana Five" and "Ya no espero". Mike's a Go Go owner, Miguel León, took them to Mexico City, where they spent a few months playing in various cafes, succeeding at A Plane du Soleil, located at the intersection of Insurgentes and Reforma.

On a trip to the port of Acapulco, they were in a car accident and some members of the band were injured. This led them to return to Tijuana and stop playing for a while. What at first was seen as an unfortunate event, in reality has become the possibility of trying new ideas and compositions. They incorporated instruments such as the zither, the koto and the bagpipes, seduced by psychedelia and the prevailing hippie style. In addition, after the completion of the recordings, the fame of the album spread throughout the country, which translated into work and a constant entry and exit in Mexico City.

On March 9, 1969, they opened The Byrds' concert at the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium, which is currently the Estadio Azul. The Union Gap group was also announced, which did not happen due to the poor organization of the event. This caused unrest in the audience. The result was a media scandal.

On one occasion, while playing at Mike's a Go Go in his hometown, Alfredo Calles approached and, thanks to Calles' good credentials, traveled to the United States, where they played in large salons owned by him. Then he took them to Mexico City to prepare, as they would be the highlight group of a nightclub that was about to open in Acapulco, Tiberios. They changed their image and defined their repertoire. After a month of preparations and trials, they moved to the port. All kinds of celebrities from Mexico and the United States participated in this inauguration, such as Tony Curtis, Yul Brynner and María Félix. Calles gave them a good salary and they lived comfortably.

What at first seemed like a great job opportunity, turned out to be a tedious job for some, and differences arose. In 1970, the Barajas brothers decided to return to Tijuana and formed the Apocalipsis group. The members who stayed in the port formed the band Love Army.

Note: The album circulates on the internet - even on the Discogs website - as dated to the year 1968. This contradicts the story told even on the blog of Lupillo Barajas. According to the musician's blog, the band Apocalipsis was formed after the end of Los Tihuana Five, in 1970. The year when he and his brother Jorge Barajas return to Tijuana and form the band already mentioned. The story is poorly told and confused. However, we continue with the post dating the album as having been released in 1968, followed by the single "Incienso y menta", as announced on the Discogs website (in the images of the single's LP, the date that appears is 1968).
Good auditions!
