Aquila - Aquila - 1970 (Progressive Jazz Rock {País de Gales/UK})

Aquila - Aquila - 1970 (front)

The Welsh band Aquila came about when their guitarist/founder Ralph Denyer left Blonde on Blonde in 1970 to work on his new project, the band Aquila. Blonde on Blonde recruited new vocalist and guitarist David Thomas - an old school friend of Denyer's - to replace Denyer, and went on to record what would be considered their best album: "Rebirth".

Aquila's music, while substantially based on art rock, draws from a wide range of influences, including jazz and heavy rock. Deyner was obviously the band's leader, writing all the songs on what would be their only release, a self-titled album originally released in 1970 on the RCA-Victor label (RCA SF 8126).

The band's lineup consisted of James Smith (drums, percussion), Martin Woodward (Hammond organ), George "Snakes" Lee (flute, saxophones) and Phil Childs (bass, piano). Denyer handled the guitars and vocals, as well as writing all of the band's songwriting.

As already mentioned, the album was released in 1970 in a folding cover and became a minor collector's item. Keith Besford designed the cover while production of the album was entrusted to Patrick Campbell-Lyons. What happened to the band after that and why they split so quickly is a mystery, especially since they were signed to a major label. There is no photo of the band - or has not yet been released. Even the images on the album cover are drawings of the band member.

Wind instrumentalist George Lee has joined Arrival (a London-based English vocal harmony and pop-rock band with singers originally from Liverpool who had a guest appearance on Maynard Ferguson's UK television special in 1970, and two chart hits, "Friends" and "I will survival" - the band was booked to appear at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970) prior to the recording of their self-titled album released by CBS. Ralph Denyer has forged a career writing books on guitar lessons, which have received rave reviews and are considered among the best of their genre.

"As thoughts are,
they would only confuse others more.
Then, with Bailey's wood in hand,
filter and form a collage of time
against vibration.
And wait"

These are the words that adorn the back cover of the only album Aquila has released, and are as enigmatic as the band. The group managed to combine straight rock music with rather complex arrangements, along with introducing various "unconventional" instruments to rock, to great effect.
