Barney Wilen and His Amazing Free Rock Band - Dear Prof. Leary - 1968 (Jazz Fusion Rock {França})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Any album that combines 60s hits like "Ode to Billie Joe", "Respect" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely woman" deserves more than a passing look. The late French saxophonist Barney Wilen was 31 when he recorded "Dear Prof. Leary" with His Amazing Free Rock Band in 1968 for the German label MPS. Better known then (and probably later) as a saxophonist on trumpeter Miles Davis' soundtrack for director Louis Malle's "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" (1958), the Promising Music reissue of "Dear Prof. Leary" presents another side to the largely forgotten Wilen.

Wilen recruited a sextet of known and unknown musicians, including the very young Joachim Kühn (piano, organ), who had finally become a cornerstone of MPS, and drummers Aldo Romano and Wolfgang Paap. The group is composed of two artists who will be, at best, footnotes in jazz history: guitarist Mimi Lorenzini and bassist Günter Lenz, who appeared on several MPS label releases and a few years later at Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Berlin (ECM, 1990).

While many of the MPS label releases seem timeless, "Dear Prof. Leary" is definitely of its time - a combination of free jazz, psychedelia and rock attitude.
