Progres 2 (Progressive Rock {República Tcheca})

Progres 2 foi uma banda
tcheca de rock progressivo.
Antes de adotar este nome a
banda gravou dois LPs, o 1º sob
o nome The Progress Organization

Nos shows, eles tocavam toda a letra original.

Progres 2 was a
Czech progressive rock
band. Before adopting this
name the band recorded two
LPs, the first as The Progress Orga-
nization and the second as Barnodaj.
Their most important album is
"Dialog s vesmírem" (1980)
and if you don't know the
band's work yet, this is
the best one to
start with.

HISTORY

The Progress Organization was co-founded by drummer Zdeněk Kluka, formerly in another Brno band, Atlantis, and guitarist Pavel Váně, a former member of Synkop 61. These two musicians played for a while with several musicians, eventually accompanied by keyboardist Jan. Vanya's childhood friend Sochor and also a Greek-born bass player Emanuel Sideridis, who finally established The Progress Organization in late 1968. The band's first concert took place on April 3, 1969 at the Reduta theater, in Brno. On May 1 of the same year, they opened the Šelepka club and, on their fourth performance, on June 19, 1969, played as a backing band for The Beach Boys at Za Lužánkami winter atadium.

The Progress Organization soon became popular, winning, for example, the Beat Festival in Tábor, being the second at the Jazzuniverziádě in Českých Budějovicích, and also performing in Bratislava and Prague. They were influenced by bands like Cream, Vanilla Fudge, The Beatles and Pink Floyd in the beginning. During the rally on August 21, 1969, Pavel Váně was arrested and imprisoned for the next few weeks, so the band had to play a few shows without him.

In 1970, The Progress Organization recorded and released their first EP album, "Klíč k poznání", with a small Brno label, Discant, which soon disappeared. In the fall of that year, because of the beginning of "normalization" that didn't like this kind of music, the group stopped working. Thanks to producer Hynek Žalčík, in January 1971, musicians recorded their first LP, "Barnodaj", and during that year also performed several shows. "Barnodaj" was hailed by Melodie magazine as the "best album of 1971". At the time, Czechoslovakia was experiencing political storms and the band was condemned to perform live only on a few occasions in a country where totalitarianism flooded all free expressions. However, the band earned a name after their debut and managed to release their second concept album (based on Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle book") called "Mauglí", which also enjoyed considerable success. This time, the band used their debut name to promote the album, which came under the name of Barnodaj.

In 1978, the group underwent a reorganization and, under the new name "Progres 2", put together a completely new program "Dialog s vesmírem" ("Dialogue with the universe"), with Pavel Váně as the lead actor. In this project that spanned the history of Czech music as the first Czech rock opera, the group collaborated with renowned actors and artists from their hometown of Brno. The album of this experimental project became the 1980s bestseller. The controversial theme of this project became a source of many problems with the ruling Communist Party: the song "Planet Hieronyma Bosche" (The planet of Hieronymus Bosch), where the band sings about life with heroin, was banned by censors and the band solved it using only the vowels of the original lyrics. At shows, they played all the original lyrics.

In the following years, the group restructured several times. The third album, "Třetí kniha džunglí" ("The third jungle book"), featured a new musical talent: Roman Dragoun. The group later released other albums such as "Mozek" (1984) and "Změna!" (1987) ("Brain" [1984] and "Change!" [1987]).
