Blåkulla was a progressive
rock band who, along with Atlas and Kaipa,
were one of the few Swedish bands to
make symphonic progressive rock.

STORY

Blåkulla began his career in 1971 as Kendal. The band hails from Gothenburg, on the west coast of Sweden, and recorded a few songs in 1974 before original bassist Steinar Arnason left the band to join Iceland. Recordings from this 1974 session were added to the original album as bonus tracks when it was released on CD, in 1997.

When Arnason left, Blåkulla was close to breaking up, but was persuaded by the Anette label to record an album. Why Anette showed such interest is pure mystery, given that the label was run by the popular Swedish dance band Cool Candys. Maybe they wanted to change to the prog movement. The album was released with a circulation of 1,000 copies, selling out quickly and becoming the desirable collector's item it is today. After the album was released, organist Bo Ferm left the band, which finally ended their career in late 1975.

After the split, the drummer Tomas Olsson and the bassist Hannes Råstam went to the band Text & Musik, joining for the recording of the second and final album "Stäng inte dörren...", 1977. Hannes Råstam also played bass in the band Björn Afzelius & Globetrotters, and offered his bassist services to several others prog movement artists over the years. However, most people know Råstam for his excellent work for TV as an investigative journalist, a job that has earned him several desirable journalism awards. His book about Thomas Quick - a Swedish serial killer whom Råstam tried to prove innocence in a posthumously released book - cause controversy in its home country to this day, sparking debate over the reliability of the Swedish legal system. Råstam died in January 2012. The guitarist Mats Öberg switched from rock to classical guitar and also works as a doctor.

This is the band's only album, released in 1975 and re-released on CD by APM (Ad Perpetuam Memoriam). The sound is constantly labeled as heavy/symphonic progressive rock and the influences of Cream, Deep Purple, Yes and Uriah Heep, or with their compatriots Råg i Ryggen, are also mentioned on websites and blogs specializing in progressive rock. Copies of the LP can cost from US$300 to US$400, being the CD version much more economical, besides having 3 bonus tracks, from 1974.
