Renan Lourenço - Sacred... Music is my religion - 2023 [front]

In 2021, the excellent Brazilian guitarist Renan Lourenço debuted with his album "Inception", released on May 17, 2021, and which I had the pleasure of sharing here on the blog. The album featured guitarist Edu Ardanuy - who was also his mentor - and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theather, Yngwie Malmsteen, Sons of Apollo, Black Country Communion). Between blues, jazz fusion and heavy phrases, the virtuoso Renan Lourenço impressed us with his refined technique and great taste. The album accumulated reviews and countless articles on specialized websites and blogs around the world, such as in Latin America: Argentina, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Bolivia and Uruguay; in Europe: United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria and Slovakia; in the USA, Canada, in addition to important websites and publications in Brazil such as Roadie Crew, Collector's Room and Whiplash. In December 2021, "Inception" was chosen by the Mexican blog Metal Pedia as "Album of the year". In addition to the album "Inception", Renan already had 3 singles released in digital format.

But he didn't stop there. This year, Renan returns with his newest work, the single "Sacred... Music is my religion", which features more refined guitar work, demonstrating that he has not stopped in time. The single was originally released on the 15th of this month, and can now be seen on all digital platforms. "Sacred..." was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alexandre Bressan at 3EM1 Studio, in Londrina, Paraná, and featured visual art by Marcela Takei. If you are an instrumental guitar lover, be sure to check out the new work from this national guitar giant.

Azymuth (Jazz/Fusion/MPB/Samba {Brasil})

Azymuth (photo 01)

Azymuth (also written in the following forms: Azimüth, Azimuth, Azymüthis a Brazilian band of diverse influences, formed in 1973 in the city of Rio de Janeiro by three well-known studio musicians who accompanied several successful artists of Brazilian popular music in the 1970s: José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti. The band was moderately successful in Brazil until its members moved to the United States and began a long, eclectic and successful international career during the 1980s. After problems at the beginning of the following decade, they returned to good form in the second half of the decade, driven by the explosion of acid jazz and a renewed interest in his work, signing with the English label Far Out Recordings. In 2012, with the death of keyboardist Bertrami, the group continued its activities with Fernando Moraes in his place.

Their songs are mostly instrumental, ranging from samba to funk, in a kind of jazz fusion, constituting a style called "crazy samba" by the members. His main successes in Brazil are "Linha do horizonte", "Melô da Cuíca" and "Vôo sobre o horizonte", in addition to the great international success "Jazz carnival". The band has more than 30 albums in its discography, in a career that spans more than 45 years and has performed in all continents of the world.

HISTORY
BEFORE AZYMUTH

José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti met around 1968 when they accompanied artists who recorded for the label Equipe, by Oswaldo Cadaxo, such as Eumir Deodato and his group Os Catedráticos, Paulo Moura and Candeia. With the experience gained as studio musicians, and also following great names in the Brazilian cultural scene at the end of the 1960s, the three formed - together with singer Fabiola and percussionist Ariovaldo Contesini - the group Seleções, in 1970, to play covers at the former Rio nightclub Monsieur Pujol, by the duo Miele & Boscoli.

At the same time, they were hired as studio musicians by Phonogram, participating in several albums by the label, such as Raul Seixas ("Os 24 maiores sucessos da era do rock", "Krig-ha, bandolo!", "Gita" and "Novo aeon"), Rita Lee (featuring Mamão in "Atrás do porto tem uma cidade"), Elis Regina ("Em pleno verão" and "Ela") and Odair José ("Assim sou eu..., Odair José", "Lembranças" and "Odair"), among others. In 1972, the trio met Marcos Valle and recorded two obscure albums with the artist from Rio de Janeiro that would be released without identifying the author: "Som ambiente", by the CID Entertainment label, and "Brazil by Music Fly Cruzeiro", which had been specially produced for be given as a gift to customers of the extinct Cruzeiro do Sul airline, of which the father of the Valle brothers was a director and Paulo Sérgio had been a pilot. In addition to these works, they also record, with Valle, a compact in which they are credited as "Alan and his Orchestra" - in line with the fashion of the time of recording with pseudonyms in English.

BEGINNING AND NATIONAL SUCCESS

In 1973, the Valle brothers were invited to make the soundtrack for the documentary by Roberto Farias and Hector Babenco, "O fabuloso Fittipaldi", and they convinced producer Armando Pittigliani to call the trio to accompany them on the recording. The directors of the documentary insisted that the Valle brothers use the song "Azimuth", which had been released in 1969 (on the album "Mustang cor de sangue", by Marcos Valle) and had even been the theme of a soap opera. As Marcos Valle had a contract with Odeon, he could not be credited as the author of the album (which would be released by Philips Records). The solution, suggested by the producer, was to credit the album to the trio, until then called Projecto III. As he did not believe it was a good name, Armando suggested that they adopt the title of the song by Marcos Valle and Novelli as the name, a suggestion with which the trio agreed. The partnership with Marcos Valle would yield yet another album, released in the same year ("Previsão do tempo"), and the trio would start touring with Marcos Valle.

In subsequent years, they continue to tour and record with big names in Brazilian popular music, such as Clara Nunes, Hyldon, Belchior, João Nogueira, Tim Maia and Banda Veneno, led by maestro Érlon Chaves. In 1974, they participated in the soundtrack of the soap opera O Espigão with the song "Pela cidade". The following year, they record an album at the Havaí studio and offer it to several recording companies. Who bought the acetates to release the LP "Azimüth" was Som Livre. Rede Globo took advantage of the new release of its sister company and included the song "Linha do horizonte", which opened the album, in the soundtrack of the soap opera "Cuca legal". Driven by the song, the album sold well. In the same year, they participate in the soundtrack of the soap opera "Pecado capital", with the song "Melô da Cuíca", which, released in a compact in the same year, was successful nationally. In 1977, they released their second album, now on WEA, entitled "Águia não come mosca". Benefiting from the fact that "Vôo sobre o horizonte" was featured on the soundtrack of the soap opera "Locomotivas", the album sells well.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

The group's unique style, especially on this release, caught the attention of Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival, who decided to invite them to participate in the 1977 edition (becoming the first Brazilian band to play at the festival). The good repercussion of the performance led to an American tour together with Airto Moreira and his wife, singer Flora Purim, who crossed the country from coast to coast. The tour ended up yielding a contract with Milestone Records, a label dedicated to jazz belonging to the American label Fantasy Records. Thus, in 1979, they released "Light as a feather" featuring the song "Jazz carnival" which, released as a compact in the same year, became a success, reaching 19th place on the British chart in January 1980 and selling 250,000 copies in Europe.

The success of their debut album on the new label allowed the group to release a series of eclectic and influential albums on Milestone over the next decade, leading to a well-established international career in the US and European markets. The three members also recorded solo albums for the same label. In 1989, two facts marked the band's career: the end of their contract with the Milestone record label and the departure - a "friendly breakup", according to Mamão - of Bertrami from the band. Thus, Alex Malheiros and Ivan Conti recruited Jota Moraes to replace Bertrami and the three signed with the Intima Records label, for which they recorded two albums: "Tudo bem" - dedicated to Chico Mendes, who had been murdered that year - and "Curumim". As success is not repeated, Jota Moraes leaves the group and Marinho Boffa takes his place. Some time later, Alex left the group and was replaced by Adriano Giffoni. Looking back on that moment, Mamão protests: "but then it wasn't Azymuth anymore".

With this line-up, the group continued to play shows, but not record. It was only in 1994, with the explosion of acid jazz from bands that worshiped Azymuth's sound - such as Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies and Incógnito - that Far Out Recordings - Joe Davis, whom they had known since 1989 - offered a contract for them - again with Bertrami and Malheiros - to record. Thus, from 1996 onwards, records began to be released by the new label - such as "Carnival", "Woodland warrior", "Pieces of Ipanema", "Before we forget" and "Partido novo" - and they experienced a resurgence, especially in England and the rest of Europe. One of the main reasons for this new interest in the group is due to the remixes of their songs by important DJs from the European electronic scene. In 2008, they released "Butterfly" which is universally acclaimed by critics as their best work on Far Out. In 2011, they released "Aurora", their last original work. The following year, on July 9th, Bertrami died, after being hospitalized to treat liver failure. After a brief hiatus, they decide to continue their career, now with Fernando Moraes on keyboards, replacing Bertrami.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Still unknown by most proggers, including Brazilians, III Milênio launched in 1990, the first Brazilian opera-rock entitled "Aliança dos tempos - Ato I: Tawan". The band returns to the studios to record "Ato II: Filhos das estrelas". And in 1991 Musea Records released the album "Aliança dos tempos", which included the two "acts". In its first month of release, "Aliança dos tempos" appears in the rankings of the genre, as the second highest selling records in Europe, according to Harmonie magazine, being above Marillion and Pink Floyd. An interesting album and, for sure, a great classic of Brazilian rock.

HISTORY

1985 was the "International Year of Peace" and in that same year, but precisely in February, Gil Vieira (guitarist) and Aron Shade (vocalist, actor) founded Ano Luz band in São Paulo, and together with Claudio Môroz (bassist, keyboardist), and the three musicians start working on the compositions.

With some songs ready, drummer Armando de Julio joins the band. And in November 1985, they entered the studio and recorded the first demo with two songs, "Guardião de ecos" and "Guerra das cabeças".

Gil and Aron had an old idea in mind to compose something different and original together. Talking a lot, the two came up with the idea of a rock opera, something hitherto unheard of in Brazil. The opera would be written in three acts, that is, three discs. Thus began the new stage of the band.

Gil had an erudite background and wanted to mix rock with classical music, something unheard of at that time in Brazil, and Aron had already sung in a choir, and, therefore, it was just "to combine hunger with the desire to eat". Thus, it was defined which musical path the opera would follow. Usually, Gil Vieira would come up with a "riff" or a musical idea, and Aron would write the lyrics. Gil and Aron started to compose, and the story was showing up in the lyrics and guitar riffs. In February 1986, they recorded the second demo with 4 songs already within the idea of the opera. With this demo in hand, they head out in search of a record label to promote their work. A friend introduced them to Pedro Eleftheriou, a progressive rock producer, who decided to embrace the project. Thus begins the second stage of the opera.

In the same year, 1986, Ano Luz presents some songs from the opera at a rock festival in Parque da Água Funda in São Paulo. People thought it was different and weird, but they applauded the band. Still in 1986, they discover that there is already another band with the same name in Rio de Janeiro, so they change the name to III Milênio.

In 1987, under the new name, without a record, with only a demo in hand and a booklet telling the history of the opera, III Milênio presents the entire opera, lasting 2 hours at the Centro Cultural de São Paulo (Rua Vergueiro, 1000 - Paraíso, São Paulo), with now in the formation Fábio Ribeiro (keyboards), brought by Pedro Eleftheriou, Ivan Lion (bass) and Renato Neves (drums), brought by Gil Vieira. For two weeks from Wednesday to Sunday, the band managed, without any media, to fill most days, with the audience cheering the band at the end of each performance. It was really an event in Brazilian progressive rock.

In 1988 the band goes through some changes of musicians, and is unable to carry out the project. Gil Vieira then, in September of the same year, left the band and went to live in the countryside of São Paulo, where he stayed for a few months. During this time, Aron Shade tries to move the band forward, but is unable to continue. Then a few months later, more specifically in February 1989, Gil Vieira returns to São Paulo and looks for Aron Shade, and proposes to resume the project and enter the studio later that year. Aron immediately accepts. So, they look for Ivan Lion and Fábio Ribeiro, who immediately accept. They are looking for the producer and the "6th element" of the band, Pedro Eleftheriou, to resume the project. Pedro brings his brother André Georges to the drums of the reformed III Millennium. So the rehearsals begin and the journey towards the band's new objective, "the disco" begins.

In October 1989, III Milênio entered the studio definitively to begin recording the first opera-rock in Brazil, and it all began at the Camerati Studio in Santo André (São Paulo). The recordings lasted for a few months, and in the middle of the recordings, Fábio Ribeiro left the band and was replaced by Roberto Braga, who took over the keyboards.

The opera would be recorded at first in three acts, one act for each disc, and during the recordings, Pedro Eleftheriou presented some songs to producer Marcos Nascimento, owner of the independent label Rock Forever, who likes the songs and decides to release a first disc with the "Ato I". And so, in September 1990, the album of the first rock opera in Brazil was released, entitled "Aliança dos tempos" with "Ato I: Tawan". The album was launched at the former Dama Xoc (SP) concert hall.

Marcos Nascimento, had exchanges with several independent producers in Europe and Japan, and sent the record to all of them. The record was a success and orders began to pour in. The album had a very positive repercussion outside Brazil, being considered as a new style of Latin progressive rock. And during this exchange, the record ended up on the biggest independent label in Europe, the French label Musea Records. The record provoked great interest at Musea, which decided to propose a contract with the CD release of "Ato II" as a bonus, with distribution in Europe, the United States and Japan. The contract was accepted by the band immediately.

So the band returned to the studio to record "Ato II: Filhos das estrelas", and in January 1991, the CD was released by Musea Records with the two "acts" of the opera.

In its first month of release, III Milênio appears in the rankings of the genre, as the second highest selling album in Europe, according to the most specialized magazine in the progressive rock genre called Harmonie, standing above Marillion and Pink Floyd, a success for a first album by an independent band, unknown to the European public and with a very interesting detail, sung in Portuguese. Too bad this projection in Europe did not reach Brazil.

Thus, the band could not stand the lack of Brazilian structure and opportunities, as it was a very audacious project for some unknown musicians outside the commercial system of Brazil. Therefore, in February 1992, Gil Vieira leaves the band for the second time, to pursue his solo career as a professional musician. Aron Shade and Ivan Lion try to take the project, but again they are unable to continue. It is the end of the III Milênio.

In 2000, someone came along with an interest in releasing an unplugged version of the opera, but that idea was not pursued.

In 7 years, III Milênio had a positive balance by recording and releasing a vinyl with the first opera-rock in Brazil, presenting this entire opera in its entirety at the Centro Cultural de São Paulo, and releasing the CD by a French label of greater projection in Europe.

Nowadays, in some specialized magazines and some international bands, they consider  as the first progressive metal band in the world genre. In March 1992, at the request of Marcos Nascimento, Gil Vieira founded the band Átomo Permanente in São Paulo.
