⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Circus was formed in 1972 in Basel, Switzerland, on the language border between the Alemanics and the Romands. Today quite unknown, it represents one of the gems of the progressive circuit, both for the collectible value of its discography, recently re-released, and for the proposed musical discourse, very personal and not prone to easy combinations. The band's team consisted of 4 elements: Fritz Hauser on drums, Marco Cerletti on bass and guitar, Andreas Grieder on sax and flute, Roland Frei on vocals, guitar and sax. Hauser was (and still is, albeit on the jazz circuit) one of the best percussionists on the German scene while Cerletti, the only non-German in the group, certainly stood out as an excellent guitarist. The other two alternated very well between voices and wind instruments, always proposed in an unusual way and never as a mere accompaniment. Until 1976, the year in which the first work on vinyl was released, the group sought to define its style, a complex progressive rock with jazzy tracks and classic episodes, proposed with a unique instrumentation characterized by the total absence of keyboards and the prevalence of acoustic guitars. over electric ones, almost non-existent. An instrumentation choice that will also be confirmed on the first two albums. Finally, singing in English was understandably linked to the hope of making the musical product offered more palatable. In general, however, the influences were Jethro Tull and King Crimson and more striking references to Van Der Graaf Generator mainly, for the way of playing the sax. In these 4 years, by the way, Circus has dedicated itself to an intense live activity whose positive results - in terms of group cohesion and sound as a whole - will already be noticed in the first album, the homonym "Circus".

In 1980, the band ceased its activity, with an unexpected epilogue: "Blue motion" was released by the group of the same name, a trio formed by two members of Circus, the keyboardist and the drummer, and a second keyboardist, Stephan Grieder. Abandoning the musical path already proposed by Circus, the atypical formation decided to travel through the mines, proposing very valid but difficult themes, always halfway between the ethereal and the avant-garde. With this work, Circus' career came to an end. Of them we have 5 splendid albums, a single and 400 concerts performed between Germany and Switzerland between 1972 and 1980 of which, for the time being, there is no official or unofficial trace.

The individual members - with the exception of Stephan Ammann, of whom there is no recent news - continued to gravitate towards their country's music circuits, as well as occasionally crossing paths on multiple occasions. Roland Frei is now engaged in production activities, mainly in Switzerland and Germany. Stephan Grieder and Andreas Grieder continue to play as session musicians, occasionally appearing in works by other artists, including some former Circus members.

Andreas Grieder, who has worked for years in international jazz circuits and especially in contemporary improvised music, is currently considered a musician who has developed his own language, contributing, along with other percussion stylists, to transforming his role as a pure rhythm producer with a true hunter of sound "colors". He currently works in the Quartet Noir, a formation born in 1998 that sees him alongside Urs Leimgruber (active since the 1970s in the field of contemporary jazz improvisation), Marilyn Crispell (considered among the best soloists of the new generation of improvisers, already a collaborator of Anthony Braxton, from the Reggie Workman Ensemble and the New Orchestra of Barry Guy, Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Mark Helias), Joëlle Léandre (bassist considered a central figure in contemporary music, crossing free improvisation). The quartet has released a single CD to date, entitled "Lugano" (published by Canadian label Victo, catalog number CD 096), which records the recording of a concert held on Swiss radio in Lugano on 29 October 2004. But the artist, the most prolific and active of the combo, has already released several solo albums ("Solodrumming", "22132434141", "Kimus # 2", "Zwei", "Deep time", "Pensieri bianchi", "Die Trommel: A radiophonic work..." and "Sounding stones", the latter released under the name Fritz Hauser/Therme Vals), one paired with Stephan Grieder ("The mirror" which also features Andreas Grieder) and appeared as a guest or contributor on several albums ("On troglodyte's delight" 1990, "On tosca salad" 1995, "On old eyes & mysteries partly", "On linear B", "Fantasia zolliologica" and "Die Trommel/Die Welle" from 1987).

Bassist/guitarist Marco Cerletti published in 1990 a solo work entitled "Random and providence" (on the Soundways label, with catalog number 38503) with the participation, among others, of Andreas Grieder and Stephan Grieder. He is currently considered a Stick virtuoso (an instrument played by Tony Levin, so to speak), to the point of being included in a website specializing in the instrument among the 14 best Stick players along with Nick Beggs (ex-collaborator of Warren Cuccurullo and Kajagoogoo), Trey Gunn (currently a member of King Crimson), Alphonso Johnson (former contributor to Carlos Santana and Weather Report) and Tony Levin himself (former contributor to Peter Gabriel and Yes, as well as a former contributor to King Crimson in the 80 and 90).
