Curtiss Maldoon and Bodast (Psychedelic/Folk Rock {UK})

Curtiss Maldoon
Curtiss Maldoon foi uma dupla de música
folk da Inglaterra, formada por Dave Curtiss
e Clive Maldoon (nascido Clive Skinner),

You make me happy/Amber man".

Curtiss Maldoon was a folk music duo
from England, formed by Dave Curtiss
and Clive Maldoon (born Clive Skinner),
former members of the band Bodast.

STORY

Although it does not involve any Deep Purple member directly, the pair's story connects to the band in two unexpected ways.

Deep Purple began operating in late spring 1968, the same time which the guitarist Steve Howe was nearing the end of his role in the band Tomorrow. Deep Purple's management company suggested that Steve meet two guys who were trying to start a band. They were drummer Bobby Woodman and bassist Dave Curtiss, both present in early 1968 when Deep Purple was being planned. Chris Curtis (no relation) had brought together Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore, with Dave Curtiss and Woodman also in the frame. As Chris's ideas became ever more outlandish, Blackmore went back to Germany and Dave Curtiss left for a tour with French rocker Michel Polnareff.

Dave and Bobby kept in touch and, together with Steve Howe, formed a trio called Canto. In late 1968, they changed their name to Bodast, and it was shortly after Clive Maldoon appeared on the scene. With an album not yet released, Bodast split in late 1969 and Steve Howe left to join Yes. The album remained unreleased until it was released in 1981 as "The Bodast tapes: featuring Steve Howe" (Cherry Red, BRED 12). A complete reissue of the original 1969 mixes came out under the title "Spectral nether street" on RPM Records in 2000 (RPM 198).

Clive and Dave decided to pair up, and Deep Purple managers offered to help them record an album. During 1970, the duo began recording. The album featured several guest musicians. Steve Howe was also able to help his former comrades on two tracks and contributed some exciting work to the final masterpiece of the album "Find a little peace", which also featured Tony Ashton's unmistakable organ work.

"Curtiss Maldoon", one of Purple Records' first releases in late 1971, was preceded by the single "You make me happy/Amber man". As the new label was not yet ready, the single was released by Regal Zonophone (RZ 3038) in Great Britain. After the album was released, Curtiss Maldoon began performing. They recruited bassist John McCoy and drummer Liam Genocky (both later teaming up with former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan when he formed his own band in 1978) to boost their own guitar and vocal work on the road and in the studio. The LP was released in the United States, and the band went there to help promote it by supporting Badfinger.

His first LP features Steve Howe on guitar, Tony Ashton and Mighty Baby musicians, including Roger Powell. The album also features the song "Sepheryn", which made the duo known to later generations when Madonna and William Orbit made it the hit "Ray of light".

It would take two years for the duo to release their next album in November 1973. Their 2nd LP came out under the name "Maldoon" as Curtiss requested that his name be removed from the project and that it be a solo album by Clive Maldoon. "I felt it was rushed and lacked the quality of the first. I wasn't happy having my name attached to it, so it went out as Maldoon/Maldoon". The album was also released by the label Purple Records, this time distributed by Warner Brothers.

After this album, Clive Maldoon kept trying to establish himself in the music world, but had a number of managerial and contractual issues. He died in 1978 of complications from prescription drugs.

In 1997, the song "Sepheryn" was recorded by Christine Leach, Clive's niece. Christine worked for a while with Madonna's creative co-worker William Orbit. "I had always loved Dave and Clive's work. 'Sepheryn' had a dream-like quality to it; that's how I always heard it - as a dream. I rewrote the chorus melody, removed a few bits - it was a kind of jam, really". Madonna listened to "Sepheryn", reworked by Christine, and raved about it. Dave Curtiss was in for a shock: "I came home from work one day and I couldn't believe it. This 27 year-old song was on an album by one of the biggest grossing artists in the world. I was pleased for Christine, too - it's great that Clive's family should benefit from his efforts".
