Epidaurus & Choice (Symphonic Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

Epidaurus (01)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Epidaurus was formed in the city of Bochum in the mid-70s, with Günter Henne and Gerd Linke on mellotron and keyboards and Manfred Struck on drums. These three original members had a clear idea about the kind of music they wanted to make, and it took a lot of time and hard work to develop it, rehearsing in an old chicken coop that they had converted into a studio that, expanded, would later become Studio Langendreer (Fairland Studios), one of the best and biggest studios in Europe. As they wished to present their music properly on stage, only the highest quality instruments were purchased.

After two years of intense work and three new members joining them - Heinz Kunert on bass, Christiane Wand as vocalist and Volker Oehmig as second drummer - the masterful album "Earthly paradise" was recorded, in early 1977. The album was self-produced, since they didn't like the idea of binding themselves too tightly but rather wanted to go on trying out things in every phase of the production process. When they recorded the LP, only the best was considered good enough and therefore the result was great. The record has become a classic. Released in 1977 in an edition of 500 vinyl copies and quoted now for about 300 euros, it is the most wanted opus of German symphonic rock. In 1991, it was eventually released on CD, which was taken from the master tapes.

CHOICE AND "...ENDANGERED"

After the break-up of Epidaurus, Günter Henne, Gerd Linke and Heinz Kunert continued playing under the name Choice, first together with singer Victor Meza and excellent drummer Uli Teske, then with Ferdi Kuehnel as vocalist, Peter Jureit on drums and Ulrich Steinert. on guitar. They released the album "Just a dream" (Rocktopus 202812) in 1980 which cannot, however, keep up with "Earthly paradise".

Gerd Linke looks for and finds the line-up of the krautrock band Herne 3, who are very successful with their first single and produce four albums in the following years. The band toured throughout Germany and disbanded in 1990, having played over 600 shows. Together with his school friend Eckhard Lander, Volker Oehmig who was one of the drummers for Epidaurus on the album "Earthly paradise" forms Rabbit. They turn their rehearsal room into a small recording studio where Gerd Linke appears in search of musicians for his band Herne 3. Meanwhile, Heinz Kunert is touring Europe, playing bass as a pro - two years later he will join Herne 3 to the end.

In 1986, a farewell member of Hemne 3, Klaus Volker Kapellen, hires Uwe Asshoff (guitar) and Eckhard Lander (vocals) to join the krautrock band Lander. Finally, both bands share a rehearsal room, and Gerd Linke plays drums during some of Lander's shows, while Uwe Asshoff joins Herne 3 during his last shows.

The split of both bands marks the beginning of a successful cooperation by Linke, Lander and Asshoff, writing songs along with lyrics in German and English. It was at this stage that a small record company approached Gunther Henne and Gerd Linke, planning to re-release the first Epidaurus album on CD for the collector market: after two reissues of this CD, they decide to re-record some previously unreleased stuff. Meanwhile, Linke, Lander and Asshoff persuaded Heinz Kunert to join their live shows, performing modern versions of '60s classics for fun and as an "exercise": Hans-Werner Eifert is playing keyboards and will later take over the lineup of new production of Epidaurus. At the same time, Linke, Lander and Asshoff are working on the new Epidaurus record, involving Christiane Wand, lead singer on "Earthly paradise".

In the fall of 1994, an agreement is reached on production terms: between 10/28/1994 and 11/19/1994, the Epidaurus album "...endangered" is produced at Fairland Studios.
