Karat (Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

Embora o próximo disco não contivesse números claramente pronunciados, o álbum "Schwanenkonig" ajudou a fortalecer o status do grupo, tanto no Oriente quanto no Ocidente.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The East German group Karat turned out to be an evolutionary path of the jazz-rock formation Panta Rhei. His original lineup includes vocalist Hans-Joachim Neumann, keyboardist / composer Ulrich Schwilms, bassist Genning Protsmann, drummer Conrad Burkert, as well as guitarists Herbert Dreilich and Ulrich Peks. A year after the team's formation, Burkert and Pex were replaced by Michael Schwandt and Bernd Roemer, and in 1977, Neumann left for military service, and Dreuich took over as lead vocalist. Karat's first album turned out to be quite diverse - there were hard blues-rock numbers and quieter things. However, most of the attention was drawn to the song "Konig der Welt", which laid the groundwork for the signature Karat sound (progressive melodic rock).

Honestly, the group's debut did not cause any confusion, but with the second complete formation, the team made a breakthrough. The basis of Uber sieben Brucken's success was an eight-minute epic "Der Albatros," with indirect criticism of the Berlin Wall and the title track, which became a hit in Germany with a cover of popular German singer Peter Maffai. Although the next record did not contain clearly pronounced numbers, the album "Schwanenkönig" helped to strengthen the group's status, both in the East and in the West.

The peak of Karat's commercial success came in 1982, when the album "Der blaue Planet" was released. The radio composition of the same name dedicated to the threat of nuclear and natural cataclysms recorded for many years in the German air, and circulation of the album exceeded 1.3 million copies, which was an absolute record for the then GDR. For "Der blaue Planet", the musicians received the "East German National Award" and, after the release of "Die sieben Wunder der Welt", were received for a prize from the television station "Goldene Europa". The ten-year anniversary was celebrated by the group "Auf dem Weg zu Euch" and the following year, Protsmann was replaced by Christian Leibig. The debut of the new bassist took place on the album "Funfte Jahreszeit", which had a commercial sound pronounced. The launch was accompanied by the resignation of Schwillms, and in the keys he was replaced by Thomas Kurtzals.

The album "... Im nachsten Frieden" was released in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but since then the popularity of East German teams has been shaken, work has gone unnoticed. In 1991, Karat tried to restore his reputation with the help of the album of the same name, but the idea failed, and the group was silent for several years.

In the mid-1990s, the public again showed an interest in "democratic" music, and the CD reissues of the early Karat albums began to have a constant demand. The band celebrated the 20th anniversary of their career with a big concert at the Berlin Hippodrome. In addition, a new album "Die geschenkte Stunde" was released, which found many buyers in the eastern lands. The album "Balance", which appeared two years later, was also very successful, but in 1998, Dreylich's health problems worsened, and show activity declined sharply. The exception was the jubilee year of 2000, when Karat's performance with Svillms, which had returned for a short time, brought together an audience of 20,000. In 2003, the studio "Licht und Schatten" was released, marked by the first appearance of music with lyrics in English.

Unfortunately, the planned tour in the company of Puhdys and City had to be canceled due to the deterioration of Herbert, and in December of 2004, the vocalist of the group died of cancer.
