Davide Spitaleri - Uomo irregolare - 1980 (Progressive/Pop Rock {Itália})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Shortly after the Metamorfosi band broke up, singer Spitaleri went to Los Angeles to perfect his voice, releasing two singles in 1978 for the Delta Italiana label - "Donna, donna/Con rabbia" (ZBDE 7054) and "San Francisco/Dondolando dea" (ZBDE 7114) - and the album "Thor" (ZPLDE 34054), in 1979, by the same label and all under the pseudonym Thor.

But his best solo work would come next year, with the release of his album "Uomo irregolare", although I have to say that in some songs Spitaleri's vocals aren't so nice (for a guy who levitated to take the photo that became the album cover, changing the tone would be no big deal ...). But this is just a detail. There are beautiful melodies on the album, being the tracks "Il servo", "Uomo irregolare" and "Computer di razza" the highlights of the album.

The album was released by the label Ciao, which also released the singles "Malafemmena/Luna park" (Ciao, EB1) along with singer Fausto Leali, "Luna park/Figli del popolo" (Ciao, 523), all in 1980 and, this time, under the real name. In 1983 he released another single, "... E lasciala cantare/Marilysa", by the label Mio Records (Mio, 003).

In the 90s, he returned with the band Metamorfosi.

Metamorfosi (Progressive Rock {Itália})

Metamorfosi é um grupo romano que está
entre os primeiros exemplos de rock
progressivo italiano. A banda foi formada
no final de 1969 por iniciativa do cantor
siciliano Davide "Jimmy" Spitaleri
e do tecladista Enrico Olivieri.

É intitulado "Paradiso", e é a continuação natural do anterior.

Metamorfosi is a Roman group that is
among the first examples of Italian
progressive rock. The band was formed
in late 1969 at the initiative of Sicilian
singer  Davide "Jimmy" Spitaleri and
keyboardist Enrico Olivieri.

STORY

1960s and 1970s

The group was born in the late sixties, when Sicilian singer and flutist Davide Spitaleri joined the band I Frammenti. At the time, I Frammenti mainly had covers of beat songs in English in the programming, but some of the latest shows follow the fashion of the messa beat (a specific strand of beat music developed in Italy since the mid-sixties, characterized by its association with Christian or religious themes in general). The arrival of Spitaleri, a singer with deep voice, long hair and solemn beard as a prophet, gives the group the definitive turn to spiritual atmospheres. In 1971, they recorded their first song, "Colore dell'anima", by Giorgio Seren Gay, Mario Mosca, Giuseppe Damele and Italo Salizzato.

After two years of experience, the first album was published in 1972: "... E fu il sesto giorno". On the album, above all, comes Spitaleri's powerful and expressive voice, which enriches the typically late, sometimes even naive, slightly bitter but always pleasant songs. The letter revolves around the theme of the fragility of man, the victim of passions, and often cites the figure of Christ as the only way to redemption. A certain naive pacifism, for example in the passage of "Hiroshima", is typical of the period. With their first album, the band plays at the Flaminio stadium in Rome as part of the 2º Festival di Musica d'Avanguardia e di Nuove Tendenze. At the end of the year, Tamburro and Natali leave the group, the latter being replaced by Congolese Herygers on drums.

It's just the second album, "Inferno", that gets fans' attention, leading them to cult band status. Released in early 1973, "Inferno" is a concept album inspired by Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy". The texts update the original poem, including, among the eternal tortures, "Politicanti", "Razzisti" and "Spacciatori di drugs". The cover art was entrusted to the excellent painter Adelchi. On the strictly musical side, the record is dominated by the keyboards of Enrico Olivieri, creator of a high-impact sound mat, with sometimes majestic arrangements well suited to the subject, with dark veins. Once again, the singer's charismatic voice is suggestive and perfectly placed in context. Finally, the representation of the album in live concerts is particularly sought after. The group appears on stage wearing clothes that embody the addictions of the man. In particular, the singer, dressed in a red tunic with a white cross on his chest, evokes the great poet with strong stage presence, who at the end of the concert is performed in the electric chair in the presence of a priest and soldiers. Although many decades have passed since its publication, the topics covered on the disc are still current. The album gets a good commercial response, and is certainly among the progressive rock masterpieces of the era.

Despite these good assumptions, Vedette's bankruptcy leaves the group unsupported, and by the end of 1973, after intense concert activity culminating in the Palasport in Rome as part of the Festival della Musica Popolare, the group broke up. The third disc in preparation is not completed. After the band broke up, singer Spitaleri went to Los Angeles to perfect his voice use, releasing a few solo albums, the first under the pseudonym Thor.

THE RETURN

In the 1990s, the keyboardist and singer returned with a new rhythm section, consisting of Fabio Moresco on drums and Leonardo Gallucci on bass and guitar, and after several shows in 2004, the third album was finally completed and published. It's titled "Paradiso", and is the natural continuation of the previous one.

In late 2009, Spitaleri accepted the invitation of drummer Michi Dei Rossi to become the new singer of the group Le Orme to replace the historical member Aldo Tagliapietra. With the group, the singer publishes two albums: "Progfiles - Live in Rome" in 2010 and "La via della seta" in 2011. The singer repeatedly stated that his entry into Le Orme would not affect the existence of Metamorfosi.

At the end of a concert held in Udine in early September 2012 with Le Orme, Spitaleri revealed that he was working with Metamorfosi on the recording of the album "Purgatorio", which would complete the 70's trilogy "Inferno" and "Paradiso" . He also stated that the tour would be followed by a promotional tour. On October 14, 2016, the trilogy's third album, "Purgatorio", is officially presented.
