Missus Beastly and Dr. Aftershave (Kraut/Psych/Progressive Jazz Rock {Alemanha})

Missus Beastly (photo 01)
Missus Beastly foi fundada
em Herford, Westphalia, em 1968 e é
uma das mais importantes bandas
progressivas da Alemanha.

HISTÓRIA
MISSUS BEASTLY

Aftershave and the mixed-pickles" (1976, April 00001).

Aftershave and the mixed-pickles", tornou-se o modelo para o nome do novo grupo.

A fotografia granulada no verso mostra Marlon Klein, Matthias Krüger e Burkard Schmid.

German progressive bands.

HISTORY
MISSUS BEASTLY

Missus Beastly, founded in 1968 in Herford, on the North bank of the Osning, was one of Germany’s first underground bands. Originally known as Psychotic Reaction (after the popular Count Five's song) they shortened their name to Reaction before changing it to Missus Beastly after a negro doll from a TV show. The line-up, which used a barn in Hullhorst as a rehearsal room, was drummer Lutz Oldemeier (born 5 December 1949, Herford), singer and guitarist Reinhard "Atzen" Wehmeyer (born 7 September 1949, Herford), keyboard player Wolfgang Nickel and bassist and singer Petja Hofman. Despite its North German roots, the majority of its gigs were in the South of Germany, especially around Mainz, and were set up by Gunter Scheding, who had moved there from Herford to pursue his studies and who gave the band considerable support.

At the Burg Waldeck Festival, in the Hunsruck, the band met Tangerine Dream, Guru Guru and Xhol. One gig in Hamburg earned to the band a whole 60 DM. Missus Beastly also played at the 2nd Essen Pop & Blues Festival. Early 1970 saw to the band recording its first LP in Gunter Tannhauser's CPM Studio in Erlangen, with Hansi Fischer from Xhol Caravan guesting on flute on "Shame on you" and several Amon Düül II members also in evidence. During a recent trip to Paris the band had been stopped at the border, searched, given compulsory haircuts and sent back at the time, such impudence was considered quite acceptable. Be that as it may, Chris Karrer, John Weinzierl and Dieter Serfas jammed with Missus Beastly around this time. The LP came out the same year with 1000 copies being pressed up (CPM LP S 002). The band retained the rights to the material: Gunter Tannhauser had merely allowed the name of his studio to be used for the label. CPM's only other releases were an LP apiece by Limbus 3 and Checkpoint Charlie, both now highly collectible. For the gatefold sleeve, Missus Beastly opted for a tasteful psychedelic picture in red. The interior photos show Atzen Wehmeyer (top left) and Lutz Oldemeier (top right), with Petja Hofman appearing bottom left and right (no picture wasavailable of Wolfgang Nickel at this point). The back cover reprinted extracts from a long article on Missus Beastly.

With the addition of Paul Vincent on guitar and Michael Scholz on keyboards, not long after the album's release, brought the band up to a six-piece. In the summer of 1970 Paul Vincent was replaced by Roman Bunka, and the band acquired a seventh member in Jurgen Benz (born 31 July 1949, Wurzburg) on sax and flute. The end of the year saw Atzen Wehmeyer and Wolfgang Nickel leaving, the former having been called up for National Service in Bielefeld.

Considerable difficulties arose when one Henry C. Fromm, from Amberg, whom no-one from the group had ever actually seen, hitched a free ride on the back of the modest acclaim they had won to date. Posing as their manager, flautist and drummer, he brought out a new edition of their LP recorded directly from vinyl. This version appeared in a different cover (which features a different running order) under the title "Nara asst incense" (1970, OPP 5-32). There was also a cassette edition of this (1970, Topsound-OPP T/OPP-032).

Having got away with this deception, Fromm even had the audacity to put out two further LPs (quite obviously recorded with a local pick-up band) under the Missus Beastly moniker: "Volksmusik: Live at Amsterdam" (1972, Electric Bird ECB-XC-321-90001S) and "Im Garten des ochweigens" (1973, Electric Bird ECB-XC-321-90002S), the latter re-released as "Super rock made In Germany" (1973, Electric Bird ECB-XC-90.003S). This outfit also released the 7"-singles "Fuck you free/Firebird" (1972, Electric Bird ECB 80101) and "Jawa Masa/Love train rock" (1972, Electric Bird ECB 80103).

The poor sound quality of these releases more or less goes without saying. To add insult to injury, in 1996 a Czech-manufactured CD of "Nara asst incense" was released on a Luxembourg-based bootleg label (Germanofon 941095).

Returning to the genuine Missus Beastly, who had by now gained a second drummer - Klaus Gotzner - and solded its van and PA at the end of 1970, the band found itself in serious difficulties and was only able to manage the occasional gig. Things finally shuddered to a halt around the end of 1971, with Petja Hofman decamping for India while Roman Bunka joined Embryo, Jurgen Benz joined Erna Schmidt, Lutz Oldemeier joined Checkpoint Charlie and Klaus Gotzner joined first Embryo, then Unterrock, then Ton Steine Scherben.

A new chapter began when Unterrock flautist, Friedemann Josch (born 21 July, 1952, Mainz), and Missing Link and Embryo' keyboard player Dieter Miekautsch met in Istanbul. Together they travelled to Herford and persuaded Lutz Oldemeier, along with Jürgen Benz and former Blues Campaign member Norbert Dömling (born 25 January 1952, Wurzburg), to give it another try - and from Autumn 1973 this five-piece played as Missus Beastly.

Early 1974 saw them in the studio with producer Dieter Dierks, laying down tracks for a second LP (1974, Nova 6.22030), on which funk, jazz and world music influences are clearly audible. Dieter Miekautsch left in Spring 1974 and Lutz Oldemeier in 1975. Their replacements, keyboard player Burkard Schmidl and drummer Butze Fischer, arrived in time for the third LP, "Dr. Aftershave and the mixed-pickles" (1976, April 00001). By now no original members were left. The fourth and final LP was "Space guerilla" (1978, Schneeball 00011), recorded in Spring 1978 by Burkard Schmidl (keyboards), Locko Richter (bass, violin), Jan Zelinka (drums) and Friedemann Josch (flute, sax).

In addition, live tracks from Missus Beastly featured on the festival samplers "Vlotho-Winterberg" (1975, Maulschnauz MOL 0001), "Umsonst und drauBen - Viotho 1976" (1976, Maulschnauz MOL 0002), "Umsonst und drauBen - Viotho 1977" (1977, MOL 0003/0004, double album) and "Umsonst und drauBen - Porta Westvlothica 1978" (1978, MOL 0005/0006, double album), while the LP "Rock gegen rechts" (1979, RGR 1) includes "Gorleben ist überall", an otherwise unreleased Missus Beastly composition: the back cover of this LP incidentally, was designed by Jutta Ditfurth, daughter of well-known scientist Hoimar von Ditfurth.

In time Missus Beastly's debut album - one of the earliest examples of German psychedelia - increasingly became a collectors' item. Hans Pokora's book "2001 record collector dreams" (Vienna, 2000) accordingly gives it a five-point rating, indicating a collectible value of 1150 DM to 2000 DM (US$500-900) in mint condition, and even the far patchier "Nara asst incense" re-release fetches in excess of US$100. Pokora's "3001 record collector dreams" (Vienna, 2001) gives this latter two points, which corresponds to a value of 200 DM to 350 DM (US$90-160) in mint condition, with the fake Missus Beastly's albums here getting the same rating, too. This high demand finally led to a legal and properly-handled vinyl re-release (D 2000: Tripkick 005) in the original red gatefold cover, of which 1000 copies were sold until now. According to Gunter Tannhauser, the original master tapes can no longer be found and so for the new vinyl edition - and also for this CD - a mint condition LP had to be de-crackled using Cedar's state-of-the-art NoNoise treatment, which gently removes any hint of background noise in the grooves without having any noticeable effect on the sound itself.

Sadly, no unreleased recordings have survived the intervening years to feature as bonus tracks on this CD release. Lutz Oldemeier later joined Aera, with whom he released two albums in the late seventies, and is still playing today, as is Wolfgang Nickel (now a classical musician) and also Atzen Wehmeyer, who is currently active in both India and Germany as a music teacher and composer of songs, children's songs and film music as well as fitting in the occasional appearance with Embryo. Furthermore, the start of 1988 saw the original line-up from the CPM LP celebrating the group's twentieth anniversary with a successful Missus Beastly gig at the Die 9 youth centre in Herford.

As ever, we conclude with the viewpoints of one or two other commentators on Missus Beastly. "The crack in the cosmic egg" by Steven and Alan Freeman (Leicester, 1996) includes the following remarks: "Formed circa 1968 in Herford, the history of Missus Beastly is confused in the extreme! Apparently the reason for such confusion is three-fold: because of their manager, constant line-up changes, and that being born in the psychedelic era they were obviously all pretty spaced! The original band were amongst the most underground and psychedelic of German bands, though less so than CPM label mates Checkpoint Charlie. Like a darker more experimental Out of Focus, with the accent on psychedelic blues and jazz, their 1969 debut was amazing for its variety andinvention".

In "Cosmic dreams at play" by Norwegian writer Dag Erik Asbjornsen (Glasgow, 1996), we read the following: "Missus Beastly were among the earliest bands of the new progressive rock wave, being founded in Herford in 1968. Their debut album was a glimpse into early German underground jazz-rock with lots of flute, psychedelicorgan and guitars. The band could be compared to Xhol and Embryo". The German magazine Sounds, who had obviously never heard of the CPM LP, had this to say about "Nara asst incense" (excerpts): "We recommend that you shell out five marks and treat yourself to the sound of an enthusiastic school band that has the added plus of ahighly varied and original musical approach to the 'olle Kamellen' (blues and heavy rock). There must be hundreds of groups like this in schools all over the world, probably all playing the same straightforward, no-frills but aggressive rock, because for them this music serves as a refuge from tough academic problems. Those who are still at school simply aren't capable of making any other kind of music. This record is very far from being a highlight of the German pop scene, but it certainly enriches it".

However, the best and most thorough account of the life and times of Missus Beastly can be found inthe first edition of "Rock in Deutschland" by Günther Ehnert and Detlef Kinsler (Hamburg, 1975).

DR. AFTERSHAVE

Dr. Aftershave mostly played instumental jazz-rock with progressive elements and was, in a way, some kind of new formation of Missus Beastly with a different name. Missus Beastly released four LPs in its lifetime. The third album, "Dr. Aftershave and the mixed-pickles", became the model for the new group's name. Strictly speaking the band recording this album was called Dr. Aftershave and The Mixed-Pickles, and the LP was called "For Missus Beastly". This was due to legal considerations, as they weren’t allowed to use their name for releases at that time.

Its fans, however, knew very well what that was all about. Some time after Missus Beastly had split once again in the autumn of 1979, due to signs of wear, Burkard Schmidl (born in Würzburg on October 14th, 1955), Norbert Dömling (born in Wurzburg on January 25th,1952), and Marlon Klein (born in Herford on December 13th, 1 957) decided to have gigs and make recordings together under the new band name, Dr. Aftershave, although they lived far away from each other: Burkard was living in Würzburg and Marlon in Herford. Norbert Dömling: "I didn’t have a fixed residence back then and was touring permanently with various line-ups. During the scarce breaks I relaxed and composed songs on the Canary Islands".

Burkard and Norbert knew each other from Missus Beastly, and in 1978 or 1979 - they did also form a trio called Big Fun, together with drummer Jim McGillivray from Epitaph. The latter musician had also played briefly with Missus Beastly in 1975, e.g. at the 106th NDR jazz workshop. And drummer Marlon Klein, who had studied classical music at the Detmold College of Music and had previously been drummer and founding member of The Real Ax Band, joined Missus Beastly at the beginning of 1979. Almost all musicians of the April label and distribution (which was later called Schneeball) actually knew each other as they sold their own as well as the other bands' records at their gigs. And musicians of the individual bands now and then switched over from one group to the other.

Meanwhile Burkard Schmidl was on grand piano and keyboards (PPG 360 Wavecomputer, ARP-Odyssey, Hohner D-6, Fender Rhodes), Norbert Dömling on a Gibson Ripper fretless electric bass, and Marlon Klein was on drums, percussion instruments, Moog synthesizer, organ and doing the occasional vocals. As they were professional artists now and knew each other well, they didn’t even need to rehearse together any longer. As far as they remember, they didn’t even have a rehearsal room but went on tour immediately and had probably about 50 concerts in Germany and Switzerland. They had coloured tour posters printed in order to announce these gigs with sometimes, however, somewhat ridiculous photographs meant to refer to their band name. Additionally they sent info sheets to promoters.

They had planned from the beginning to make recordings for an LP, and thus they booked the well-known Stuttgart Zuckerfabrik sound studio, which was actually situated in the building of a former sugar refinery and burned down later, from August 19th to 22nd, 1980. Christoph Wertz acted as their sound engineer, and they produced the recordings themselves. The group recorded nine self-written pieces with a total playing time of 42 minutes, that is, LP length. Regarding the musical style, the tracks are quite similar to those of the late Missus Beastly's jazzy period. The provisional working title of the album back then: "Echo 50".

At the end of "Mysterious pyramids" Marlon's voice istobe heard briefly, and as he was an endorser back then of the legendary first Trojan drums, this very drum set was used for the album. Norbert Dömling, who was a Gibson endorser at that time, played a Gibson Ripper bass in these recordings. He had Thomas Römer (Munju drummer and joiner) sand the frets, so that he practically had a fretless bass with the frets, however, still visible in the fretboard. There was probably no other instrument of this kind. After Norbert Dömling's old Fender Jazz Bass, manufactured in 1964, had been stolen, he kept changing instruments. The LP was originally meant to be released on the record label of the Zuckerfabrik sound studio, but its downfall had already started, so that this plan came to nothing. For the release the artists subsequently offered the completed recordings to several other labels. They had interviews with some of them, among them Mood Records. Why these talks and plans finally came to nothing is something the three of them can’t remember any more. One ofthe reasons was probably that at that time, with punk rock and new wave music becoming popular, musical styleslke jazz-rock were in little demand.

Anyway, the recordings were not released back then, so that the pieces on the CD at hand are now to be heard for the first time. Marlon Kleinhad stored the master tape conscientiously and had also copied it as a DAT (Digital Audio Tape), and thus it survived the decades undamaged. He also remastered the material, so that the songs sound like new again. The tasteful cover was designed by their friend, Friedel Muders, who was also responsible for the covers of the two latest Missus Beastiy LPs.

Less than one year later, i.e. still in 1980, Norbert Dömling quit Dr. Aftershave. He himself cannot remember the exact reason any more, but there was no quarrel involved. There were probably simply too many other responsibilities to see to at that time. He was replaced by Matthias Krüger from The Elastic Rock Band, and at that late stage of the band also Jurgen Benz on saxophone joined Dr. Aftershave briefly. Subsequently, there was a Missus Beastly reunion, probably simply because that band name was established better. Members of that line-up were Burkard Schmidl on keyboards, Matthias Krüger on bass, and Marlon Klein on drums, until they split for good in 1982. When Dr. Aftershave had split, Marlon Klein and others founded the well-known band Dissidenten with whom he has had gigs till this day. From that time on, Norbert Domling has been playing together with countless jazz musicians and is still musically active as well. Burkard Schmidl is working in his Klanggarten sound studio and has released the results of his work on several CDs.

In the German-language Wikipedia edition all three of them have their own entry, and especially those on Burkard Schmidl and Marlon Klein are exceedingly detailed. Despite their short life span of just over one year, there were several posters (all three of them in broadsheet) and info sheets of Dr. Aftershave. One colour poster shows the band with the somewhat ridiculous photographs. Another one - in plain black and white - shows only Marlon Klein on drums. The third and last poster, a colour poster from the group’s late phase, already lists Matthias Krüger and Jürgen Benz as band members. On the front side of the first info sheet, a four-page leaflet, there is a photograph of the band members with false beards. The inside is designed in blue on a white background. The front side of the second one, a double-side printed info sheet from their late period, shows (from left to right) Marlon Klein, the photographer, Matthias Krüger, and Burkard Schmidl in a mirror. The grainy photograph on the reverse side shows Marlon Klein, Matthias Krüger, and Burkard Schmid.

There was, surprisingly, yet another German band with this unusual band name. They mainly covered well-known songs and released the blues CD "Live in Berlin" in 1997. There aren't any connections to "our" Dr. Aftershave.
