Octopus (Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

Octopus (Progressive Rock {Alemanha})
Octopus foi uma banda de
rock progressivo formada

STORY

Pit Hensel and Claus Kniemeyer's plan to have an independent group matured in mid-1973. They invited singer Jennifer Hensel, drummer Dieter Becke and organist Werner Littau and examined the musical concept of Frankfurt, where it was generated the band.

In the summer of 1975, Octopus went to the studio to record their first full-length album. That hope was suddenly buried when the producer ran out of money for it. A year later they recorded - now on their own - "The boat of thoughts". Kniemeyer, who wrote the lyrics, involved daydreams in legible lyrics, like the aggression during meaningless conversations in, "If you ask me", which were carried by melodic tones but also, which are carried by melodious and aggressive sounds.

"We are singing in English because we also
want to sell the album to foreign countries"
- Kniemeyer

With Sepp Niemeyer joining the band in October 1977, the group solved "a problem that kept popping up": the new (third) drummer gave the complicated rhythm the necessary stability. The maritime-themed band Octopus also deals with mystical tales of the sea in their second LP "An ocean of rocks". For example, "Octopus/The Survivor of Atlantis" describes the underwater journey of a visitor to Atlantis who unexpectedly discovers a world filled with peace and joy. Jennifer Hensel gives a distinct voice to thrilling concert rock: "A singer equally gifted in motor and musical skills" (Frankfurter Rundschau).

In September 1978, guitarist Winfried Kowallik (formerly Streetmark) replaced Pit Hensel. The new lineup was followed by a phase of intense touring throughout Germany. By the time Octopus - arguably a high point of their 79 concert season - performed in front of 60,000 people at the "Rock gegen Rechts" festival in Frankfurt in June, the recording of their third album "Rubber angel" had already been completed. The music on the album was more direct and deliberately commercial compared to earlier content-laden works. When "Rubber angel" finally appeared in January 1980, the departure of guitarist Winfried Kowallik and longtime vocalist Jennifer Hensel was already a done deal. The 30-minute film Octopus, broadcast by Hessischer Rundfunk on its third television show, almost had the quality of an obituary. Kowallik and Hensel began to realize their own musical ideas. For a first single (1981), the name was "The Jennifer Capell Band", before the name of the original project from the early 1980s was chosen as the name of another group in October...

For a short time Octopus then played with singer Doris Tangel and Alex Rodman (guitar), before in the summer of 1980 first Austrian Georg Klivinyi (guitar), then in autumn Wiesbaden singer Michael Stein (ex-Schinderhannes Rocktheater) reinforced the Octopus giving a new musical direction. With Petrus Wippel as sound engineer, Octopus' fourth album titled "Hart am Rand" was recorded in January and February 1981 at Spygel Studio in Kirchheim. What was suggested in the third LP "Rubber angel" was fulfilled by the Frankfurt quintet much more consistently in "Hart am Rand": the step towards pure rock. Michael Stein sang songs like "Monster In Der Geisterbahn", "Bastard" and "Verfolgungsjagd Im Entlüftungsschacht" in German in a rock'n'roll way. The band maintained this lineup until the end of 1981.

Drummer Sepp Niemeyer switched to the Frankfurt group Flatsch!: a group that used not only music but also visual stimuli, costumes and sketches. Octopus initially did not find a steady drummer, instead playing with guest musicians, including Ringo Funk (a German rock star). Keyboardist Werner Littau also left Octopus, but stayed with the band for performances - as a freelancer, so to speak, received temporarily. Littau strengthened Hubert Kah's band, initially for television appearances, then also for his shows, including the 2nd Levi's festival tour in the spring of 1983. Between the fall of 1982 and the spring of 1983, Octopus appeared in a steady line-up with Kniemeyer, Klivinyi, Stein and Ulf Wenzel (drums, Alan Woerner band) as well as keyboardist Hello Unverzagt. With the last appearance of a concert series in May 1983, Octopus dissolved.
