Oscar Benton and His Band - Bensonhurst blues - 1974 (Blues Rock {Países Baixos})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Many people know and love Oscar Benton for only one single song, “Bensonhurst Blues” (a composition by Artie Kaplan), which is completely unfair. Possessing a beautiful hoarse voice and luxurious “boorish” vocal style, this old bluesman deserves much wider popularity.

It all started in the Dutch city of Haarlem in 1967, when a young guitarist, violinist and mandolinist Ferdinand Van Eif assembled the first line-up of his blues band. Europeans in their musical preferences often focused on America, so it is not surprising that young musicians took appropriate pseudonyms: bassist Peter Van Kouten became Hank Hawkins, drummer Herman Soverein became Tanney Lent, and Ferdinand Van Eif became Oscar Benton. The band was named by the name (or rather, by the pseudonym) of the vocalist and guitarist: Oscar Benton Blues Band. Later pianist Hans Van Dam joined them.

A year later, the debut album “Feel so good” was released, released on the label Decca, and after a successful performance in August 1968 at the popular festival in the Netherlands, Loosdrechtse Jazz Festival, another one that hit the British charts was “The blues is gonna wreck my life", with the saxophonist and producer Tony Woz.

In general, the consistency of the composition of the Oscar Benton group did not differ. In 1970, the Oscar Benton Blues Band looked like this: Gus Aaporte (bass), Johnny Laporte (guitar), Jean Billem Slayting (drums) and Hans Van Dam (piano). In the same composition in 1974, musicians, by then gone from Benton, created the Barrelhouse Blues Band, a rather successful instrumental group, subsequently recording with different vocalists. In 1972, Benton's group consisted of: Rob Van Donselaar (piano), Rob Ten Bokum (guitar), Aad Hooft (drums) and Henno Van Donselaar (bass). But be that as it may, the Oscar Benton Blues Band for several years remained the most popular blues band in Holland and its neighboring countries.

The albums “Benton ‘71”, “The best” and “Draggin’ round” was released in 1972, besides several singles. This was followed by attempts to make a career like pop singer, but did not bring much popularity.

Unexpected success came in 1981, when Alain Delon used "Bensonhurst blues", recorded almost 10 years ago, in his directorial debut, “For the skin of a policeman”, and made him the main theme of the film. As a result of such a kind of advertising campaign, the group takes off to the first places in the European and Japanese charts, in 1987 such a giant as EMI re-releases old albums. Having reunited the same year, the band recorded a new album on EMI and began a successful touring activity.

Although the title track is not to my liking, the other songs bring a tasteful blues that should please everyone who accompanies this blog. Good auditions!
