Pinguin - Der grosse rote Vogel - 1972 (Krautrock/Progressive Jazz Rock {Alemanha})

Pinguin - Der grosse rote Vogel - 1972 (1972, Zebra Records [front])

The origins of the band Pinguin began in the mid-60s, when guitarist Markus Schaub, bassist Tom Wohlert, saxophonist Elmar Kast and drummer Klaus-Dieter Blahak played together in a beat band called The Jay Five. With the end of The Jay Five, its members formed the band Talix, along with vocalist Klaus Gebauer and guitarists Markus Schaub and Joe Voggenthaler.

The band Talix released an album in early 1971 titled "Spuren", which featured a mix of psychedelic and pop with krautrock. At the end of the year the band changed its name to Pinguin and signed a contract with Zebra, Metronome's progressive label. The seven musicians recorded the album "Der große rote Vogel" between September and November 1971 at Love Studios in Cologne, Germany, and released it in early 1972 (Zebra, 2949 001).

"Der große rote Vogel" follows the line of better-known krautrock bands such as EulenspygelEiliff and Tomorrow's Gift, incorporating influences from jazz, heavy, psych rock and classical music, delivering long, rich tracks, full of impressive twists and turns and convincing pauses and maintaining balance between complex arrangements. All lyrics are sung in the German language.

Supposedly, Pinguin disbanded around 1973. A truly obscure German group, whose only member to appear on another studio project was Elmar Kast, who was part of the band Ocean Orchestra, a group of musicians who recorded a self-titled album in 1979 (including members of Kaarst, Association P.C., Release Music Orchestra and Key).

The album was re-released just 35 years later on the pirate label Minority. Excellent krautrock, strong and rich, with long, progressive tracks.
