Popol Vuh & Popol Ace (Progressive Rock {Noruega})

Popol Ace (1)

Eles fizeram sucesso com as canções "All we have is the past", "Queen of all queens" e "Music box".

Schulze havia tocado na banda instrumental The Quivers.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Popol Vuh (later Popol Ace) was a popular Norwegian progressive rock band in the 1970s. They enjoyed success with the songs "All we have is the past", "Queen of all queens" and "Music box". The band received the Spellemann Award in 1972 in the category best group. In 1975, the band changed its name to Popol Ace to avoid conflict with German band Popul Vuh. After vocalist Jahn Teigen left to pursue a solo career, the group released another LP, "Curly sounds", but Popol Vuh was not the same as before. The band lost a lot of their fans after the clear shift in style to a more commercial sound, and the band was disbanded.

In 1994, Popol Ace, with Jahn Teigen as vocalist, conducted a nationwide tour in connection with the release of the compilation "Cat of 9 tales".

HISTORY

The band consisted of Thor Andreassen (drums), Toddler Eide (flute, trombone), Pete Knutsen (guitar, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer, electric piano), Terje Methi (bass), Arne Schulze (guitar) and Jahn Teigen (vocals) . Knutsen, Methi and Andreassen had been members of Kirkenes (Norway) band The Scavers. Schulze had played in the instrumental band The Quivers. And all six had experience in the nine-member band, Arman Sumpe d.e., which released only one single in 1972.

Popol Vuh featured melodic and virtuous progressive rock on their debut album, "Popol Vuh" (1972), which received critical acclaim and earned them the Spellemann Prize. Eide left the band before the release of their next album, "Quiche Maya" in 1973. The name Popol Vuh had been used since 1969 by a German band, and when Polydor Records in 1975 wanted to release the Norwegians abroad, they changed his name for Popol Ace to avoid conflict with the German band Popul Vuh. Frank Zappa asked without hesitation to release his records in the United States. Teigen turned down an offer to become the new lead singer for Genesis after Peter Gabriel left. The album "Stolen from time" (1976) was recorded in France and reached the seventh place in Norway.

Teigen left the band to focus on his solo careers and Prima Vera. Acclaimed solo artist Asa Krogtoft, who sang in the band 1-2-6, was the vocalist on the 1978 album "Curly sounds" but was poorly received by fans and critics due to the shift in the sound's direction to something more commercial. Popol Ace was dissolved shortly thereafter. Schulze went on to work as a sound engineer in the US. Knutsen, Methi and Andreassen continued their careers as studio musicians.

In 1994, Schulze, Knutsen, Methi, Andreassen and Teigen conducted a nationwide tour in connection with the release of the compilation "Cat of 9 tales" and in 2003 Popol Ace performed several shows with the Kringkastingsorkestret (Norwegian Radio Orchestra).
