Sweet Slag - Tracking with close-ups - 1971 (Progressive Jazz Blues Rock {UK})

Sweet Slag - Tracking with close-ups - 1971 (front)
Sweet Slag foi uma banda
inglesa de progressive jazz blues
rock, de Luton, que lançou o álbum
"Tracking with close-ups" pela President

"Flavor of decay", uma raridade que não faz parte do álbum da Sweet Slag, aparece na compilação de 2021 da Grapefruit Records "I'm a freak baby 3 (A further journey through the British heavy psych and hard rock underground scene 1968-1973)" com cortes de Ashkan, Budgie, Bram Stoker, Chicken Shack, Free, Fuzzy Duck, Hawkwind, Leaf Hound, May Blitz, Nazareth, Pink Fairies, Quatermass, Red Dirt, Steamhammer, Tear Gas, Thin Lizzy, Third World War, Trapeze, Warhorse e Writing on the Wall.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sweet Slag was an English progressive
jazz blues rock band from Luton that released
the album "Tracking with close-ups" on President
Records in 1971. This is a very rare album that
sounds very unique, with a very unusual
combination of rock and jazz.

HISTORY

The band Sweet Slag originates from the city of Luton, England, and was formed in 1969 by guitarist, violinist and vocalist Mick Wright (on the album and in advertising he is known as Mick Kerensky). Mick Wright had gained great experience as a musician by being one of the members of the famous The Grease Band, the support band of musician Joe Cocker. For his project, he called bassist and trombonist Jack O'Neil. Then drummer Al Chambers and saxophonist and oboe player Paul Jolly.

President Records, a soul and pop label that subsisted on its flagship The Equals, gave Sweet Slag the chance to make an album. The band signed a publishing deal with Kassner Music (The Animals, The Kinks, Cliff Richard) and recorded seven original songs by Mick Karski Karenski at Pan Sound Studios under the working title Guerilla Jazz Rock.

As Sweet Slag, recording began in September 1970 on President Records. A year earlier, in August 1969, ZigZag magazine, in its fourth edition, had already announced their existence, by presenting in its pages a show that they would play with bands that were also growing in the English scene, such as GroundhogsHigh Tide and Edgar Broughton Band. "Tracking with close-ups" was released on January 15, 1971 (President Records - PTLS 1042).

"Tracking with close-ups" was produced by studio rookie Mike Cooper and engineered by Ken Scott, who also worked on albums by America, Aubrey Small, David Bowie ("Hunky dory"), Elton John, Linda Lewis, and Lindisfarne ("Fog on the tyne"). The back cover features liner notes by Karenski and supporter Keith Edwards, who later drummed in Sensations’ Fix. Edwards refers to Sweet Slag's album as "a vitriolic electric piece of continuity".

The original release of "Tracking with close-ups" appeared just behind label titles by singer and songwriter Alan James Eastwood and thew band Zappatta Schmidt, and just ahead of the debut album by American pop singer Paul Davis. After the release of the album, very few magazines made any note about the album, Melody Maker being one of them, where the work was praised a lot.

The record was not a great sales success, but that did not stop them from performing in small pubs and rarely in larger venues. One of these shows with the highest capacity took place in the city of Bradford, at a festival with the bands Ghost and The Equals, where more than three thousand people attended. The show took place at a venue called Mecca Ballroom and was a benefit event intended to help a disaster that occurred in Pakistan. However, the publication Music Now was merciless in describing the Sweet Slag show as being aimed at intellectualoid people. He also described that the public did not like the show and that silence could be heard between the songs, interrupted by isolated applause.

In October 1971, the band underwent some changes, becoming a quintet. Among the changes were the replacement of bassist Jack O'Neil by John Catlin, the entry of a second guitarist, Keith Arnold, and the name change, now just Slag. The band ended its activities shortly afterwards.

Alan Chambers, the drummer, played in a band called Wedgewood in the 1980s and passed away in 1998. Paul Jolly resurfaced in the 1980s in Mummy, a little-documented free-jazz ensemble with Lol Coxhill. He also played on ’80s free-jazz albums by Will Menter and Loverly.

REISSUES

"Tracking with close-ups" eventually became one of the rarest UK artifacts of the post-psychedelic era. It was first reissued on CD in 2004 on Sunrise Records. Further CD issues followed on Air Mail Archive (Japan, 2006) and Aurora (UK, 2013). In 2018, Acme/Lion Productions reissued the album on vinyl.

"Flavor of decay", a non-album Sweet Slag rarity, appears on the 2021 Grapefruit Records comp "I'm a freak baby 3 (A further journey through the British heavy psych and hard rock underground scene 1968-1973)" with cuts by AshkanBudgieBram StokerChicken ShackFree, Fuzzy DuckHawkwind, Leaf HoundMay BlitzNazarethPink FairiesQuatermassRed DirtSteamhammerTear Gas, Thin Lizzy, Third World War, Trapeze, Warhorse, and Writing on the Wall.
