HISTÓRIA
THE CHURCHILLS

Em vez de The Beatles e The Rolling Stones, as pessoas agoram ouviam motivos gregos.

JERICHO JONES and JERICHO

HISTORY

THE CHURCHILLS

Interestingly, in the 1960s, rock and roll and psychedelic bands existed not only in Europe and America, but also in exotic countries like Israel. An example of this is the British-named Tel Aviv group The Churchills. The beginning of this story was released in 1965. By this time, rock and roll had already penetrated Israeli soil, and the younger generation listened with pleasure to the sounds of The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Shadows. Of course, several cover bands began to appear, and among them was one formed by school friends Yitzhak Klepter (guitar), Ami Treibesh (drums) and Selvin Lifshitz (vocals). A little later, they joined guitarist Haim Romano and bassist Miki Gabrielov.

After going through several variations of names like Churchill's Band and Churchill's Hermits, the guys decided it would be The Churchills (by the way, "Churchill" was Klepter's nickname). All members of the group had different musical tastes and as a result, the team easily changed from one style to another. This approach made The Churchills the most successful and popular band in Tel Aviv.

In 1968 Kleptor and Selvin went to serve in the army. These vacancies were occupied by a Canadian native, Stan Solomon, who played at the time in various Haifa groups, and Rob Huxley - a member of the British team The New Tornados, who came to Israel on tour.
In late 1968, The Churchills released their first single and soon after toured Denmark, where they performed as the opening band for Deep Purple.

Upon returning home, the boys found that the local music mood had changed dramatically. Instead of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, people now listened to Greek motifs. The Churchills quickly rebuilt, updating their concert repertoire, and Solomon even sang in Greek. The guys also started to create trendy soundtracks, and this work served as the basis for the debut album.

Most of the album material was written by Solomon and Huxley. "Churchill's" was a relatively modest psychedelic work, with the explicit influence of The Beatles. The album was not commercially successful and soon after release, Solomon left the group, which had other nonmusical interests. To somehow compensate for the loss of the singer, Stan introduced his partners to popular Israeli pop singer Arik Einstein. And although the band lost its independent status, the collaboration of musicians with Einstein was successful. Together they recorded some good albums and became the first to play rock and roll in Hebrew.

In 1970, he finally found a replacement for Solomon - Danny Shushan became the new leader. Upon his arrival, The Churchills decided to internationalize. To do this, the team went to London, where they worked under another sign: Jericho Jones.

JERICHO JONES and JERICHO

Jericho Jones (later simply Jericho) is the British reincarnation of the Israeli formation The Churchills. The set started with a pop style, but gradually turned its style into psychedelic, with the influences of The Beatles and The Doors. Having achieved some success in their homeland, the musicians decided to try their luck in the international arena and rushed to London's hot rock and roll. Shortly before that, the singer had changed groups and Stan Solomon was taken by Danny Shoshan of The Lions. The new singer gravitated toward a heavier style and thus a Led Zeppelin cover, "Living loving", soon appeared on the team's repertoire. As for the other participants, there were four more: Robb Huxley (guitar, vocals), Chaim Romano (guitar, vocals), Michael Gabrielov (bass) and Ami Tribih (drums).

The Israelis initially arrived in the British capital for a short time (about a month), but by some miracle they got a contract from A&M Records and made a debut recording. For these achievements, however, they had to sacrifice the original name, as someone decided that the name "Churchills" in Churchill's homeland would not contribute to success. The group was quickly named Jericho Jones (as a symbol of East and West unity), and under this label the album "Junkies, monkeys & donkeys" was released. In addition to England, "Junkies, monkeys & donkeys" was also released in Israel and France, and the single "Time is now" was distributed in some other countries.

If the first Israeli attack on Europe was short-lived, then for the second time they decided to stay there longer, not only to work in the studio, but also to watch concerts in abundance. The group's board was reduced to Jericho and in 1972 the longplay (LP) of the same name was released. The sound of "Jericho" became even harder. And while the album also had other pleasurable moments, such as the track "Justin and Nova" or the 11 minutes of "Kill me with your love", the expected success did not reach the team. As early as May 1972, Tribikh and Gabrielov departed for their homeland, and the remaining trinity tried to follow in some way for another year, but in the end renounced all powers. Subsequently, Michael made a good solo career in Israel, Danny followed his example (but not so successful), Chaim became a session pro, and Robb and Ami left the music: the first was somewhere in America and, the second, opened a butcher shop in Tell Aviv.
