Jess & James and The J.J. Band (Progressive Jazz Brass Rock {Bélgica/Portugal})

Jess & James foi uma dupla belga que,
com sua banda de apoio, The J.J. Bandfoi

O nome do grupo era Jess & James and The J.J.

O primeiro single, "The end of me", foi lançado em 1967, seguido por "Move/What was I born for" ainda no mesmo ano, ambos pelo selo Palette Records.

A The J.J.

Jess & James was a Belgian duo who, with
their support band, The J.J. Band, were
especially popular in the late 1960s.

STORY

Jess and James were the stage names of the brothers Antonio and Fernando Lameirinhas. Antonio was born in 1944 and, in 1947, Fernando. Both were born in Portugal. Since childhood they were fascinated by music. But in Portugal under dictator Salazar, there was not enough money to pay for music lessons. This changed when the family moved to Belgium and the Lameirinhas brothers moved to Charleroi. Fernando went to work in a marble company and bought a guitar, with the money he earned, to join the Academy of Music, which he was successful in. Antonio, under the influence of his brother, learned to play bass.

In the early sixties, they founded their first group: The Robots, a typical group like the then popular bands The Shadows and The Spotnicks. Despite the arrival of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, his preference was nevertheless beat music. After a short period living with their parents in England, and after playing in some beat groups - such as Screaming Lord Sutch, for example -, the brothers move to Brussels, where they met the American soul of Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. This music influenced them to the point of changing the style of their compositions, influenced by soul music from now on. In 1967, they form a new group. Roland Kluger (son of Jacques Kluger) became their manager. The group's name was Jess & James and The J.J. Band, with a brass and percussion session. The band members included Ralph Benatar and Garcia Morales.

Jess & James often performed at the small Les Cousins club in Brussels, where the oldest Belgian rock and roll group, called The Cousins, was discovered. It was at this club that singer Jimmy Frey first heard them, in which The J.J. Band asked to accompany his music.

The first single, "The end of me", was released in 1967, followed by "Move/What was I born for" later in the same year, both on the Palette Records label. And it was with this single that Jess & James made a huge success across Europe, earning them an album - "Move" - released in 1968 also on the Palette Records label. In 1969 the band's second album - "Revolution, evolution, change!" - is released, followed by "Jess & James" (also from 1969). However, the group's success was short-lived: the discord between the vocalists (who wanted to continue making soul) and their support band (which aspired to make music in the style of the American group Chicago) grew. And at the end of 1969, their paths separated.

Jess & James then formed a group around Scott Bradford (who later married teen idol Anneke Soetaert). Later, they moved to Amsterdam and made another failed attempt: Sail-Joia.

The J.J. Band went their own way by releasing a self-titled album in 1970, another called "J.J Band" (without "The") in 1971 and changing its name to Plus in 1972. Among the members of The J.J. Band and Plus were people like Francis Goya (real name Francis Weyer, who would later become a worldwide hit with "Nostalgia" and would have millions of romantic souls dreaming of his guitar melodies), Bruno Castelluci (drummer of jazz known all over the world) etc.
