Amon Düül [I, II, III] & Utopia (Krautrock {Alemanha/UK})

Amon Düül II (1)
Amon Düül é uma banda de rock
alemã que se formou no curso do
movimento estudantil na década de
1960 tem existido em várias
formações até os dias de hoje.
A banda é considerada como uma
das representantes mais impor-
tantes do movimento
Krautrock.

A opinião pública estava dividida.

E a lista continua, e continua, e ...

A gravadora perseguiu objetivos puramente comerciais e exerceu controle musical na produção do álbum "Made in Germany".

HISTORY

In 1967, an artists' commune was founded on Leopoldstrasse in Munich (West Germany) in honor of the ancient Egyptian god Amon, with the addition of "Düül", which could not be explained clearly. The commune consisted mainly of university students, who formed a music group initially with the aim of financing it. It is important to highlight that, in the same commune, were some of the future founders of the Red Army Faction - (Rote Armee Fraktion, also known as Baader-Meinhof Group or Baader-Meinhof Gang). The communes (German: Kommunarden) soon achieved cult status through their musical sessions at the events and demonstrations of politicized youth. However, it was not possible to agree on a common musical concept. A faction of the communes defended the libertarian path to artistic freedom and accepted anyone who wanted to make music, whether they knew how to sing or play or not. The other faction was conservative in this respect and valued musical ability. It was then that in the 1968 Essener Songtagen, started by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and Tangerine Dream, among others, there was an official pause when, in place of a band, two bands with the same name appeared, Amon Düül and Amon Düül IIat the suggestion of drummer Peter Leopold.

From then on, they went their separate musical paths, but they still continued, for some time, to be a commune, living together and sharing musical ideas.

AMON DÜÜL

Amon Düül played mostly improvised music, without a musical structure. The frequent change of members of the formation did not contribute to the development of a concrete musical character. Many of these "musicians" were from Kommune 1 (or K1) in Berlin. Kommune 1 was a politically motivated residential community in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was founded on January 1, 1967 in West Berlin and finally dissolved in November 1969.

Led by Ulrich Leopold, Amon Düül included Ulrich's brother Peter Leopold, along with Austrian Rainer Bauer and Chris Karrer on guitars. Later, the commune would add Bauer's sister Ella, as well as Helge and Angelika Filanda, Uschi Obermeier, Wolfgang Krischke, Falk Rogner, and Renate Knaup.

The shocking "anti-music" was their favorite. The titles had names like "Mama Düül and her sauerkraut band are playing" or "A beautiful girl dreams of Sandosa" ("Mama Düül & ihre Sauerkrautband spielt auf", "Ein wunderhübsches Mädchen träumt von Sandosa").

Within a short time, four albums were released under the direction of Peter Meisel, co-owner of Hansa Musik Produktion, at the same time as the Amon Düül II albums.

Although albums with odd titles like "Collapsing - Singvögel zurück" or "Disaster - Lüüd Noma" were criticized by critics, they were very much loved by fans. Today they are rarities and are among the psychedelic highlights of the krautrock genre.

In 1970, Amon Düül performed for the last time.

AMON DÜÜL II

Amon Düül II, composed by Chris Karrer, Peter Leopold, Ulrich Leopold, Falk Rogner, John Weinzierl and Renate Knaup, gave importance to a minimum of musicality. At the 1968 Essener Songtage, critics confirmed only a "half-hour musical nothingness", but their 1969 debut album "Phallus Dei" (Latin for "the phallus of god") set standards in German rock history. The title song was 21 minutes long. Public opinion was divided. Siegfried Schmidt-Joos described the album in the book "Rock-Lexikon", published in 1973, as a mixture of "futuristic disaster reports with Old Testament disaster reports". The group finds it difficult to deal with criticism and responds with definitions: "lonely magic sound" and "honest copies of Pink Floyd music". Still, the album sold well.

The film industry requested a commissioned work after the group presented the concert film "Amon Düül plays Phallus Dei", made by Rüdiger Nüchtern. In Rainer Werner Fassbinder's WDR film "Niklashauser Fart", shot in May 1970, the group can be seen playing the theme that gives their first LP its name. The music of the 1970 movie "San Domingo" even earned the musicians the "German Film Award" ("Deutschen Filmpreis") in 1971.

The first half of the 1970s was the most productive phase of Amon Düül II. Saxophonist Olaf Kübler, who also worked with Klaus Doldinger and Udo Lindenberg in the 1970s, has been responsible for the production since 1970. Kübler gave the group wide artistic freedom. Ten albums and several official compilations were released in six years. The regular cast at the time consisted of:

Chris Karrer (guitar and vocals, born January 20, 1947), Renate Knaup (vocals, born July 1, 1948), John Weinzierl (guitar, born April 4, 1949), Peter Leopold (drums, born on August 15, 1945 - † November 8, 2006), Lothar Meid (bass, born August 28, 1942 - † November 3, 2015) and Falk Rogner (synthesizer, born September 14, 1943).

After the release of his first album, Amon Düül II managed to negotiate a double album with the label to be the successor.

"There was a big uprising, the label got a double LP. Scary!" - Olaf Kübler

The second album, "Yeti" (1970), already meant discovery in Great Britain - perhaps (or precisely) because the lyrics of the group's previous album were repeatedly presented in old-fashioned German or in dubious English. In 1972, Melody Maker certified that they were the first German group "to make their contribution to the international music scene".

The recordings took place in January 1970. In the play "Sandoz in the rain" the musicians from the first formation of Amon Düül participated "for the sake of old times". The Swiss company Sandoz, which produced LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), tried to sue this title.

The first disc of the double album contains seven composed pieces, including the 13-minute suite "Soap shop rock" which, with its alternation between lyrical and contemplative passages and more powerful and sonorous passages, is reminiscent of early work by King Crimson. The second disc contains three improvised pieces, of which the shocking "Sandoz in the rain", according to Stewart Mason (Allmusic), can be seen as "the birth of space rock". Allmusic gave the album four and a half stars out of five.

Ingeborg Schober, in her biography of Amon Düül ("Tanz der Lemminge", 1979), says that "the absurd and the ancient are spun (transformed) into a fine sense of humour", and also says that "'Archangels thunderbird' it would certainly have been successful if it hadn't been published everywhere in Germany".

In June 2015, the renowned Rolling Stone magazine voted the album 41st in the top 50 progressive rock albums of all time.

CURIOSITY ABOUT THE ALBUM COVER

The cover was designed by the band's organist Falk Rogner and features a collage made from a photograph by Wolfgang Krischker, depicting the "Grim Reaper" or "Death" (German: "Der Sensenmann"). Krischke, who had worked with the band as a sound engineer, died of hypothermia under the effects of LSD.

According to some information, in 1969, during a period of severe winter, the musician decided to travel to his parents' house and, during one of his walks through a forest near Kronwinkl (Eching municipality, in the Landshut district, Lower Bavaria) under the effect of LSD, Wolfgang Krischke was lost and before he was able to return to his parents' house, he developed hypothermia and died.

Falk Rogner said: "When he died I thought that the photo would be a perfect tribute to his memory. He never managed to find his way into Amon Düül properly when he was alive, so maybe his image as 'Der Sensenmann' will work as a strange cover image and he could be remembered as a magical person".

Part of the cover was used on the cover of Julian Cope's book "Krautrocksampler", which provides a personal account of the underground music scene in Germany from 1968 to 1970.

LINE-UP CHANGES AND UTOPIA

Personnel changes and connections to other bands were numerous in the early 1970s: Chris Karrer and Lothar Meid became involved repeatedly with Embryo, and Renate Knaup went to work with Florian Fricke. Later, fellow Popol Vuh Daniel Fichelscher replaced Peter Leopold on drums. Bassist Lothar Meid worked with Klaus Doldinger, and his predecessor Dave Anderson later switched to Hawkwind. There was a tour with Can for Renate Knaup, who was temporarily replaced by Jutta Weinhold, who had previously appeared in the musicals "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar". And the list goes on, and on, and...

In 1973, Amon Düül II separates over a fight that included threats with guns and knives. One half left to record "Wolf city", the other half formed Utopia with a few other musicians. During the recording sessions for "Wolf city" and "Utopia", the members of Amon Düül II made amends again, which ended with the entire Amon Düül II gang playing on both records. However, Utopia should be seen as a completely independent project (although their only album was reissued under the name Amon Düül II for commercial reasons in the 1980s). Utopia's album release in CD format in the year 2000 includes 3 bonus tracks - "Goldrush", "Star-eyed" and "Dr. Stein" - which were taken from the band's 18 Karat Gold release, "All-bumm", from 1973.

In 1975, the band, which was previously independent, was signed by Atlantic Records. The label pursued purely commercial goals and exerted musical control over the production of the album "Made in Germany". The influences of disco music at the time became unmistakable. Producer Jürgen S. Korduletsch was later responsible for the successes of Claudja Barry and George Kranz, among others. In the second half of the 1970s, Amon Düül II was just a pure studio project, featuring Stefan Zauner (who later became the lead singer of the pop band Münchener Freiheit) and Tommi Piper (the German voice of television alien Alf).

In 1981, the last album was released. For a while... Krautrock was getting old. Now it was the turn of disco, punk and new wave genres. Chris, Falk and Renate tried to revive Amon Düül II under their own direction with two new albums in the early 1980s, but they were unsuccessful commercially and the project quickly disappeared once more. Lothar Meid meanwhile worked with Marius Müller-Westernhagen, produced his albums and composed the music for the movie "Theo gegen den Rest der Welt" ("Theo against the rest of the world").

AMON DÜÜL III

Also in the 1980s, John Weinzierl tried to use the myth created about the name Amon Düül II in his own band, with musicians from Wales and England, and released five albums as Amon Düül (UK) between 1982 and 1989. But he also failed to be creative, let alone match the success of Amon Düül II.

Amon Düül III was announced on concert posters in the mid-1980s, but it was probably just a public relations joke by the band Hawkwind, who announced them as special guests, without a performance by Amon Düül II musicians having been confirmed so far. Hawkwind had been doing a lot to promote Amon Düül II in Britain since the early 1970s, and guest appearances would be conceivable. The existence of the krautrock niche in the 1980s led to greater interaction within the scene. So Amon Düül II musicians experimented and merged with Embryo and Guru Guru musicians and could be seen, though not together, on many stages of smaller festivals.

RETURN

After the death of former Hawkwind singer Robert Calvert in 1988, Chris Karrer, who had just worked on recordings with him, organized a memorial concert which was also attended by Renate Knaup and Peter Leopold, contrary to the original plan for a solo concert. The one-off event turned out to be Amon Düül II's reunion, and Lothar Meid and Falk Rogner rejoined the band for concerts in Italy the following year. The recordings with Robert Calvert were published posthumously in 1989 as Amon Düül. Other joint appearances remained sporadic at first: at this time Karrer was also busy with solo projects, among others with Ernst Fuchs and Kurdish singer Şivan Perwer.

In the early 1990s, krautrock again became socially acceptable. Amon Düül II experienced a comeback with a growing demand for older albums, which have been increasingly re-released since then. 1995 saw the release of a new album, "Nada moonshine #", and since a tour of Japan in the same year, Amon Düül II could be seen again on the festival stages. In addition to the post-published live recordings and current live material, other new studio recordings have been made since then. In 2005, a DVD recording of "Krautrock meeting" at Rockpalast was released.

The group has been suing Repertoire Records and its director Tomas Neelsen for several years over the publication of unauthorized reprints of old albums. New releases authorized on the SPV label are characterized by bonus material recorded in 2005 and 2006. In 2009, Amon Düül II released a new studio album called "Bee as such", and in 2014, with the release of the album "Düülirium".
