Zoo (Psychedelic Progressive Jazz Brass Rock {França})

Zoo (French band [photo 01])
Zoo foi uma banda de rock
progressivo francesa, nativa de Paris.
Esteve localizada anteriormente em
Nantes, Loire-Atlantique e ativa entre
1969 e 1972. Foi reformada em 2010
sob o nome Zoo Tribute Original.

HISTÓRIA
1968-1970

A banda consistia de: Joël Daydé (vocais), Daniel Carlet (saxofone tenor, violino) e Michel Hervé (baixo), Pierre Fanen (guitarra), Michel Ripoche (saxofone tenor, violino, trombone), Tony Canal (trompete), André Hervé, Christian Devaux (bateria) e Michel Bonnecarrère (guitarra e composição).

O segundo é o prenúncio do futuro álbum, pois inclui a primeira versão do "Hard times, good times".

HISTORY
1968-1970

Zoo was formed in 1968 from members of the New Strangers group. The band consisted of: Joël Daydé (vocals), Daniel Carlet (tenor saxophone, violin) and Michel Hervé (bass), Pierre Fanen (guitar), Michel Ripoche (tenor saxophone, violin, trombone), Tony Canal (trumpet), André Hervé, Christian Devaux (drums) and Michel Bonnecarrère (guitar and composition).

In 1969, the nine musicians participated in the tours and formed a private repertoire, colored by the orchestra's multi-instrumentalists, firmly seated on a very jazzy rhythmic base. The group entered the studio on April 16, 1969. After two days, the recording of the first eight songs was completed. Barclay only released this recording after the commercial success of the albums "Transit authority" (Chicago) and "Blood, Sweat and Tears" (Blood, Sweat and Tears)The deep music and the hoarse voice of Joël Daydé characterize these titles. In November 1969, the group participated in the festival in Amougies (a place in Belgian Wallonia) along with Pink Floyd, Coliseum, The Nice, East of Eden, Frank Zappa and others.

In 1970, musical, relational and financial differences led Joël Daydé and Pierre "Pierrot" Fanen to leave the band. Without a vocalist, Zoo places an ad on Melody Maker and recruits English singer Ian Bellamy. The second album was recorded from June 12 to September 9, 1970. In this new work, the violins take power, relegating the brass in some titles despite their success, especially the saxophone, in "Endless words". The album is scheduled and serves as a nomination for American radio stations such as WOR-FM and WABC-FM, two of New York's biggest stations.

FIRST SUCCESSES (1970-1972)

A 33 rpm excerpt compilation of the first two albums, directed by Robin McBride, was released in the United States under the RCA label. The group participated in the recording of two songs by Leo Ferré, "Le chien" and "La 'The nana'", published in singles and the album "Amour anarchie". A single, "Dodo, boulot, métro" was also recorded with Eddy Mitchell shortly after the album.

In the late 1970s, the band performed in England at various clubs and universities, especially at Ronnie Scott's in London, where they shared the stage with Charlie Mingus. They also performed concerts in France at Les Halles de Paris during the month of November. The year 1971 is charged in collaborations, which limits the output of the group's own titles. Ranked second at the French Pop Grand Prix, the band participated in the Saint-Gratien festival in early April with Dynastie Crisis, Ergo Sum, Voyage, Triangle, etc. Then Olympia arrives in October with Caravan and Seatrain.

Only two singles were produced in 1971, the first is the soundtrack for the movie "Les Jambes en l'air" with Francis Blanche. The second is the harbinger of the upcoming album as it includes the first version of "Hard times, good times". Released in May, the single was the band's biggest hit (12,000 copies sold). Léo Ferré produces the album "La solitude", with the contribution of most Zoo orchestra titles. The collaboration with the artist ends with a tour and seven days of sold-out shows at Mutualité.

In 1972, Zoo released the album that would have the band's biggest commercial success. In addition to the titles already mentioned and the second version of "Hard times, good times", the album contains some hits, tending to r&b. After attending MIDEM earlier this year, the Zoo returns to the scene for a tour in England during May, then in Strasbourg at the Wacken festival.

SEPARATION (1972)

The release of the latest single "Life is Living/Stiggy poo" makes no difference to the inevitable breakup in October 1972. The group failed to gain international recognition, often unlucky, especially during tours in the Anglo-Saxon countries under restricted national market law, which condemned many groups at that time.

An album called "Zou (Zön Orchestra Unlimited)" was released in 1975 on Polydor. He associates the brothers Hervé (André, Michel, Joël and Stéphane) and Maria Popkiewicz on vocals. The cover of this album was designed by Bernard Buffet. Most Zoo members have made a career in the music business. André and Michel Hervé and Maria Popkiewicz join Magma in 1979.

RETURN (2009-2010)

Zoo is renovated with new musicians and this time under the name Zoo Tribute Original. In 2009, Michel Hervé discovered musical pieces of his brother André Hervé, which were previously missing. Michel Hervé decided to return to the stage with the original members - including Joël Daydé - who remained loyal to the group, completed by other new musicians.

Zoo Tribute Original records, on January 19, 2010, in the Lorient Hervé family lands, the album "Live episode 1", which includes about fifteen Zoo titles, a tribute to Leo Ferré and unreleased tracks, including the live album single, "Rummy's saga", signed by André Hervé and Maria Popkiewicz. Zoo Tribute Original consists of three founding members - Michel Hervé (bass), Joël Daydé (vocals) and Maria Popkiewicz (vocals) - and seven newcomers - René Lebhar (guitar), Cyril Zardé (violin), Bertrand Richard (piano) , Brenda Hervé (vocals), David Rusaouen (drums), Patrick Bourgoin (saxophone) and Jean-Marc Welch (trombone).
