Oscar Benton and His Band - Bensonhurst blues - 1974 (Blues Rock {Países Baixos})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Many people know and love Oscar Benton for only one single song, “Bensonhurst Blues” (a composition by Artie Kaplan), which is completely unfair. Possessing a beautiful hoarse voice and luxurious “boorish” vocal style, this old bluesman deserves much wider popularity.

It all started in the Dutch city of Haarlem in 1967, when a young guitarist, violinist and mandolinist Ferdinand Van Eif assembled the first line-up of his blues band. Europeans in their musical preferences often focused on America, so it is not surprising that young musicians took appropriate pseudonyms: bassist Peter Van Kouten became Hank Hawkins, drummer Herman Soverein became Tanney Lent, and Ferdinand Van Eif became Oscar Benton. The band was named by the name (or rather, by the pseudonym) of the vocalist and guitarist: Oscar Benton Blues Band. Later pianist Hans Van Dam joined them.

A year later, the debut album “Feel so good” was released, released on the label Decca, and after a successful performance in August 1968 at the popular festival in the Netherlands, Loosdrechtse Jazz Festival, another one that hit the British charts was “The blues is gonna wreck my life", with the saxophonist and producer Tony Woz.

In general, the consistency of the composition of the Oscar Benton group did not differ. In 1970, the Oscar Benton Blues Band looked like this: Gus Aaporte (bass), Johnny Laporte (guitar), Jean Billem Slayting (drums) and Hans Van Dam (piano). In the same composition in 1974, musicians, by then gone from Benton, created the Barrelhouse Blues Band, a rather successful instrumental group, subsequently recording with different vocalists. In 1972, Benton's group consisted of: Rob Van Donselaar (piano), Rob Ten Bokum (guitar), Aad Hooft (drums) and Henno Van Donselaar (bass). But be that as it may, the Oscar Benton Blues Band for several years remained the most popular blues band in Holland and its neighboring countries.

The albums “Benton ‘71”, “The best” and “Draggin’ round” was released in 1972, besides several singles. This was followed by attempts to make a career like pop singer, but did not bring much popularity.

Unexpected success came in 1981, when Alain Delon used "Bensonhurst blues", recorded almost 10 years ago, in his directorial debut, “For the skin of a policeman”, and made him the main theme of the film. As a result of such a kind of advertising campaign, the group takes off to the first places in the European and Japanese charts, in 1987 such a giant as EMI re-releases old albums. Having reunited the same year, the band recorded a new album on EMI and began a successful touring activity.

Although the title track is not to my liking, the other songs bring a tasteful blues that should please everyone who accompanies this blog. Good auditions!

Listening to "Gusano mecánico" one can see the great influence of
the three bands mentioned above and others like Santana and Pink Floyd.
The sound is based on hard/heavy rock mixed with elements of progressive and psychedelic.
The three musicians work very well, but the main highlight goes to
the guitar that brings "killer" solos.

Swampgas - Swampgas - 1971 (Hard Psychedelic Rock {US})

colocado sob a asa do produtor Artie Kornfeld (Wind in the WillowsWoodstock) e começou a gravar um LP. Devido a dificuldades financeiras,

guitarra do compositor Baird Hersey,
que continua a fazer música hoje
como líder do conjunto de
canto harmônico Prana.

Este álbum de 1971, injustificadamente
obscuro, deste quarteto de rock, liderado
pelo compositor Baird Hersey, apresenta
oito longas faixas no estilo Grateful Dead,
destacadas pelas composições pesadas
"Eulogy" e "Trapped in the city".

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Discovered for the first time during
the opening of a Grateful Dead show,
the Long Island quartet, Swampgas, was
placed under the wing of the producer Artie
Kornfeld (Wind in the Willows, Woodstock) and
began recording an LP. Due to financial difficulties,
the album lasted a year and was finally released
in 1972 (Buddah BDS 5102), time when the
band, disillusioned, had already broken up.

Listening to his only album now,
one immediately notices the solitary
and rural vibe of the South, considering its
northern roots, and the inventive guitar work
of composer Baird Hersey, who continues to
make music today as the leader of the
Prana harmonic singing ensemble.

This 1971 album, unjustifiably obscure,
from this rock quartet, led by composer Baird
Hersey, features eight long tracks in the style of
Grateful Dead, highlighted by the heavy compositions "Eulogy" and
"Trapped in the city".

Svanfrídur [Svanfríður] - What's hidden there?

Ainda assim, eles viajaram para Londres e gravaram seu único álbum "What's hidden there?", no Majestic Studios.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Svanfrídur was formed in 1972 by former Náttúra vocalist and keyboardist Petur Wigelund Kristjansson, guitarist Birgir Hrafnsson, bassist Gunnar Hermannsson and drummer Sigurdur Karlsson. They toured Iceland for several live shows, also including two trips to the Faroe Islands, but failed to secure a deal on an appropriate label. Still, they traveled to London and recorded their only album "What's hidden there?", at Majestic Studios. The album was pressed there, but only released in Iceland in late 1972.

The album only sold a few hundred copies, leading the band to a decision to disband in the mid-73s, even when veteran guitarist Bjorrgvin Gislason (also from Náttúra) joined them. Kristjansson and Gislason formed Pelican, and two years later Kristjansson and bassist Gunnar Hermannsson formed Paradis. Birgir Hrafnsson and Sigurdur Karlsson formed the rock band Change.

Primevil - Smokin' bats at Campton's - 1974 (Hard Rock {US})

Primevil - Smokin' bats at Campton's - 1974 (2004, Radioactive Records [front])

Euclid - Heavy equipment - 1970 (Hard/Garage/Heavy Psych Rock {US})

Euclid - Heavy equipment - 1970 (2005, Skyf Zol [front])

Harold Perino Jr. (a.k.a.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Euclid's first and only album is among the best heavy rock albums of the late 60's and early 70's of all time. With its base formed in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the musicians were excellent and very experienced, coming from a diversified New England garage and psychedelic rock fund. Harold Perino Jr. (a.k.a. "Marris") came from The Ones, a garage band from central Massachusetts. The other members were from southern Maine. Rockers Gary Leavitt (vocalist, guitarist), his brother Jay Leavitt (drums), played the band The Cobras and, Mark Mazzota, in the psychedelic group of Maine, Lazy Smoke.

One of the cool things about this album is the overall experience of the group members of various background influences on it. Pedigree aside, this is a powerful psychedelic heavy rock album that is strong by itself. There is a raw and fierce garage element mixed with a very clear and real psychedelic conviction. These dazzling features combined with his new discipline of heavy/hard rock and focus, have resulted in one of the best heavy rock albums recorded in the US. The instrumental contributions of the various groups, are combined with their crystalline vocal entry.

Euclid signed a contract with Flying Dutchman Records, Amsterdam Records, distributed by Mainstrean Records, and was one of the few, if not only, "rock" releases on both record labels.

The album itself, to this day, is a perfect monument to what musically represents the US transition from hard psych to hard rock. With its noisy riffs and soils, heavy drums and vocals with special effects, the album, produced by the legendary Bobby Herne was one of the "unknown" cornerstones that helped pave the way for America's burgeoning heavy rock movement.

Pale Acute Moon - Newtopia - 1985 (Symphonic Progressive Rock {Japão})

Pale Acute Moon - Newtopia - 1985

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Along with Gerard, Outer Limits, Deja Vu and Pageant, Pale Acute Moon was part of the progressive Japanese symphonic movement in the 80s. This one-piece band seems to belong mainly to keyboardist Motoi Semba. Former member Teru's Symphonia and Rosemary (also Kennedy and Shonen Knifejoined guitarist Masahiro Imamura, drummer Ryoichi Terashta, bassist Katsunori Hamada and singer Shinji Akahori in 1984 for that purpose. They launched the much-hailed "Newtopia" in 1985.

The song is praised for its arrangements and keyboard work (and of course, the usual comparisons with Emerson, Wakeman, Banks, Jobson, etc.). The difference here is that there is also an incorporation of electronic musical styles from the 80's. However, that does not mean it's not symphonic. There is widespread orchestral quality, and only about half of the songs have vocals.

Although they recorded only one album, the band did not officially separate until 1988. That's when Semba joined Teru's SymphoniaThe reissue of the album "Newtopia", by Musea Recordshas bonus tracks from his solo career.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1977 and separated in 1989, Fromage's history begins when two Japanese musicians, who would become famous in the future, get together to form a band, but leave long before it can release its first album. , in 1984. We're talking about Toshio Egawa (Novela, Gerard, Scheherezade) and Ikkou Nakajima (Pageant, Ie Rai Shan).

Led by flutist Manabu Higashizawa, the lineup included Tomohisa Hayashi (bass), solid guitarist Yoshihito Kondo, Yoshi Shimamura on keyboards and drummer Hirozaku Taniguchi, Fromage released "Ondine", an excellent symphonic album on the threshold of the neo progressive movement in England.

For their second album "Ophelia" released in 1988, the band had several changes: Yoshihiro Kitamura (keyboards) Tohru Ohta (guitars) and Yuji Tanaka (bass) join the band, making a big change. "Ophelia" has stronger melodies and the keyboard orientation is 100% symphonic, a very solid album. Their latest release is "Tsukini-hoeru", which has material from both eras, this would explain why it is credited as being released in 1990, but on some sites it appears as recorded in 1985.

Fromage still survived until 1993, apparently due to artistic differences they split, their spirit kept alive by Tohru Ohta, Hirozaku Taniguchi and Yoshihiro Kitamura, who went on to form the band Cinema.

Fromage is among the best Japanese symphonic bands and a good starting point for a collection would be "Ophelia" when they reached the peak of their creativity and developed an absolutely symphonic personality.

Salty Dog - Salty Dog - 1976 (Hard/Psychedelic Acid Fuzz Rock {Zâmbia})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Salty Dog, like many other bands from Zambia, was an acid fuzz rock band.
Recorded in 1976 at the private DB Studios in Lusaka, the self titled debut release was the eighth album released on the Zambezi.
Having already been together for six years, the band, who at the time were in their mid 20's, took a month to record the effort that contained all original songs.
Influenced by Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Beatles and locals such as Rikki Ililonga and Alick Nkata, the band relied heavily on their talented guitarists.
The forerunner to Salty Dog was a band called "Way Out Impression". This was a three man band consisting of Jackie Mumba on guitar, Alex Mwilwa on drums and Norman Muntemba on bass guitar.
Jackie and Norman had grown up together since 50's, and had learned to play on homemade banjos.
"Way Out Impression" was a hard rock band modelled after The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Their music was a combination of original compositions and covers of rock songs. Prior to "Way Out Impression", Jackie and Norman were also members of a very popular boys school band called "The Invasions". They found local fame as the band was very popular, especialy in Lusaka where they performed at many venues.
During the period in which they formed Salty Dog, the band found themselves debating life. They wanted to give birth to ideas that would develop and change the lives of people... Touch them in a happy and positive way.
Steve Doran (a friend of the band) commented that sperm was such a force, and that Salty Dog was slang for sperm in some hip societies within the U.S.
The band members unanimously agreed with excitement that Salty Dog would be the name of the group.
The band consisted of Jackie Mumba on guitar, Norman Muntemba on bass and Alex Mwilwa on drums. They also shared vocal duties and played other instruments on some songs.
The illustration of the dog was done by Trevor Ford, a British artist who came out to work and teach art in Zambia. He was a great friend of the band, and regrettably his work was not acknowledged on the album cover by accident. Norman, the guitarist for the band did the remainder of the design and artwork for the cover, since he was known for having created artwork for albums by Paul Ngozi, Zebby Tembo and Keith Mlevu.

The band found moderate success, but received a lot of airplay, and "Try a little harder" still gets spun on Zambian Radio today.
Their lead single, released before the album, which was recorded during the sessions of the album and then extracted to create the 45 rpm vinyl "Sunday morning sunshine" was left out of the album while the other side "Down in my shoes" found its way for the self titled LP.
The band stayed together for over fifteen years and recorded a second album that was released in 1980. There was not enough money in music during that period, and all the band members had daytime jobs that forced them to work in various towns. This resulted in few performances, and death of some of the members finally resulted in the end of the band.
Jackie and Norman continued to play together until Jackie's death in 1988. Norman is the only living member today.
