Predmestje - Brez naslova - 1977 (Progressive Jazz Fusion Rock {Eslovênia})

1975-1978: COMEÇOS/ÁLBUMS "BREZ NAZLOVA" e "DANES, VČERAJ IN..."

1979-1984: A CHEGADA DE POMPE VINDO DO EXÉRCITO/ÁLBUMS "HAZARD" e "KAMASUTRA"

A música ganhou o 1º prêmio.

Eles tocaram as músicas "Ritem življenja" e "Oaza".

Predmestje ("Suburb") was a Slovenian jazz fusion band
which was active from 1975 to 1984. The band was a major factor in
Yugoslavian jazz fusion at the time and therefore influenced the
Yugoslavian music scene with its style.
In their time in Slovenia, the band was considered one of
the most virtuous, of the best quality and most serious.
The albums featured more sophisticated and predominantly instrumental
songs, but they also recorded simpler songs for radio production.

STORY

1975-1978: BEGINNINGS/ALBUMS "BREZ NAZLOVA" and "DANES, VČERAJ IN ..."

The beginning of the band dates back to 1975, when drummer Janez Hvale called keyboardist Andrej Pompet by phone, with whom he sometimes played along. Janez Hvale invited Pompeta to play in a new band, along with guitarist Peter Gruden and bassist Gabrijel Lah. At first, the group rehearsed in rooms, but then moved to the basement of the house on Station Street, which was opposite Kino Dvor. With four demos, they soon arrived at Radio Ljubljana, where Mojmir Sepe allowed them to record. The producer was Andrej Arnol, and the band recorded the songs "Balada", "Ona", "Nihče ne ve" and "Ritem življenja", which became the band's first hits. Before recording their first album, the band recorded a few more tracks, the most successful being "Divja reka" and "Čarovnik".

The band began to focus on instrumental songs and, due to their growing popularity, were invited to a Ljubljana TV broadcast. The show was noticed by Studio Akademik sound artist and owner Miro Bevc, who invited them to record in his studio, which took place in September 1976.

"When we played this show, he came to us and said, 'Guys, this is phenomenal!
I'll give them a studio and find a publisher.'
And then he convinced Boris Kovačič, who was then head of PGP RTB in Ljubljana,
to record this album 'Brez naslova'." Andrej Pompe

The band joined saxophonist Alexander Malahovsky in September 1976, and together they recorded their first album in just 22 hours. The album was produced by Deco Žgur and released by PGP RTB from Belgrade.

In 1977, the band participated in the Subotica Youth Festival and the same year in Celje, participated in the Slovenska Popevka festival, where she played the song "Mala nočna kronika" and won the Best Music award. This was followed by a tour of Slovenia with performances by YU Grupa and Parni Valjak (Steam Roller).

In early 1978, the band went to a studio in Novi Sad, where they recorded their second album "Danes, včeraj in ...". Before the recording, there were some changes in the band: Janez Hvale replaced Tone Dimnik-Čoč on drums, Alexander Malakhovsky and Lado Jakša joined the saxophone, and percussionist Uros Secherov participated as a guest on the recording. The album was produced by Jovan Adamov and was also released by PGP RTB. At the end of 1977 Andrej Pompe received a call to serve in the military service in Ajdovščina and, due to his recording, lost 14 days, followed by 1 year's break.

“I say that each period brings its own path, its forms, its expression.
Of course today [the songs] would be different, sound different, normal,
because today people also take care of all these years, how much he gave,
how much he learned about music, how things have changed in the world... .
Of course, I would have done many things differently, but I would never change
what I did then, because it was as it was and was the best at that time."
- Andrej Pompe, when asked what he could have done differently today, if he could re-record all these songs.

1979-1984: THE ARRIVAL OF POMPE FROM THE ARMY/ALBUMS "HAZARD" and "KAMASUTRA"

After returning from the army, Pompe composed the band's third line-up, made up of members of the old band Izvir: guitarist Slavko Lebar, bassist Marjan Lebar, drummer Andrej Petković and singer and percussionist Marko Bitenc. The band began producing material to record a new album, and in 1980 they began working with singer Marjetka Neca Falk. Together with her, they performed at Slovenska Popevka that same year, and performed the song "Storila bom to", to which Pompe contributed music and adaptation, with lyrics written by Daniel Levski. The song won the 1st prize. Pompe had collaborated with Marjetka Neca Falk on Slovenska Popevka a year earlier when she sang the song "Ljubimec moj", which won the 3rd Prize and the International Jury Prize, and a bronze plaque from Stop Magazine.

In the same year, the band released their third album, "Hazard". The album was recorded the same year at the Studio Akademik, and the album's producers were Karel "Čarli" Novak and Braco Doblekar. Pompe first used the ARP Odyssey synthesizer and, as a guest, performed saxophonist Jernej Podboj, a former member of Mladi Levi (Young Lions). In 1981, the band collaborated with Neca Falk again and recorded their single "Neću/Formula jedan" as a backing band. In the same year, they again participated in Slovenska Popevka, where they accompanied Marko Bitenc and played the song "Kdo si ti" with him, and also participated in the Opatijski Festival.

The following year, the band went to the studio for the fourth time. The recording resulted in the fourth album, "Kamasutra", with influences from ska and pop music, and with more vocal tracks than its predecessors. The album's producer was Braco Doblekar, and the recording was invited by artist Boris Šinigoj, a former member of Mladi Levi. Due to controversial art, the album cover has been replaced several times and the album was released late. During this time, drummer Petković was drafted into the army and was replaced by Jani Tutta. The group was active until 1984, when it ceased operations.

On February 2, 2010, Dragan Bulič hosted a show called "Še pomnite prijatelji" ("Remember your friends"), which also featured the band Predmestje. They played the songs "Ritem življenja" and "Oaza".

Altona (Progressive Jazz Brass Rock {Alemanha})

Altona (photo 01)
Altona foi um septeto alemão
de jazz rock que existiu de 1972 a

Altona was a German jazz rock
septet that existed from 1972 to 1975.
The band's style was classified as
brassrock and Wagner-rock.

HISTORY

Altona was the new project of the former Thrice Mice founding members, singer and sax player Karl Heinz Blumenberg and guitarrist Werner von Gosen. By changing the name to Altona (a part of the city of Hamburg) they wanted to express their local attachment and at the same time demonstrate a change in their musical direction - away from excessive meditative improvisations to a more compact and catchy sound. In their first album, "Altona" (1974), this change of direction (luckly) didn't come. On this first album the band retained the feel of Blodwyn Pig who dominated the first Thrice Mice recordings.

The contacts the band had made in their Thrice Mice days helped with the organisation, and they had gigs all over Germany. Unfortunately, the first album didn't sell well in spite of the efforts made by major label RCA Victor. As a consequence, the band changed their musical direction drastically and produced a second LP, "Chikenfarm", in 1975. This album differed distinctly from the first album, which had been more in the tradition of Thrice Mice and their progressive rock. "Chikenfarm" flirted with the American funky wind section jazz rock that was very popular in 1975, but lacked necessary originality. Their attempt to address a new audience failed, and Altona dissolved in the end of 1975.

The best known title of the first album is probably "Überlandfahrt" that impresses with Blumenberg's sax play and a guitar solo characterized by von Gosen's wah wah effects. In the 1970s the song was played every Thursday as the identification jingle of the radio program "Hitparade international" by the Hessian broadcasting station.

Altona's cooperation with singer-songwriter and cabaret artist Hanns Dieter Hüsch was rather untypical and unusual. They accompanied him occasionally at his gigs and helped with several titles of his double album "Nachtvorstellung".

After ending his participation in Altona, Werner von Gosen turned his back on the music business, just like his brother Rainer had done earlier after the end of Thrice Mice. Karl Heinz Blumenberg was later successful with the band Leinemann and, along with Klaus Gerlach, played in the obscure band Dirty Dogs.

exuberante, incluindo sax, violoncelo e flauta.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sicher is an obscure group from Zurich that only released one album.
What makes this band interesting is despite the fact that their sole release
is from 1981, the sound is distinctly early '70s.

The eight man outfit featured Markus Sibler, Klaus Caspar, Beat Lustenberger,
Kuno Müller, Peter Müller, Stefan Sieber, Paul Sieber, and Catherine Graf.
The large number of musicians allowed for
a lush sound including sax, cello and flute.

It would be easy to pigeonhole Sicher as classic symphonic
especially when hearing the oft covered Bach's "Toccata".
Other songs do reveal a jazzier almost Canterbury side.
If any direct comparison were to be made, fellow countrymen
Eloiteron might be the best place to look.
The safer bet is to say that Sicher drew on the entire cannon of classic prog.

The album was recorded at Line in Recording Studios which is known for
producing the influential metal band Celtic Frost's early recordings.
Kuno Müller and Stefan Sieber seem to still be active in music,
but nothing is known about the other band members.

Prior to releasing its first long play (LP), the band recorded an EP in 1979 titled ''Gaspar'', which was sold during its shows. The EP was pressed in 1000 copies and today the original vinyl remains a rare collector's item.

The album "Armageddon" is often considered one of the most acclaimed Greek progressive rock albums. "Armageddon" was released in 1982, but was immediately banned because of the blasphemous lyrics and the copies had to be destroyed. Fortunately, about 300 records survived and ended up as highly sought after "collector's items" (worth over US$300,00). German progressive label Second Battle (SB 014, 1991, Germany) re-released "Armageddon" in CD format, copied directly from the original LP, because the mastertapes were lost. There is also an LP format version of Anazitisi Records (ARLP/S 80-25, Greece) - this label has already cited in the post of the band The 4 Levels of Existence [Τα 4 Επίπεδα Της Ύπαρξης] -, released in 2008, which includes as bonus tracks the 1979 EP "Gaspar". Here on the blog, we have an unofficial version released in 2006 by Mason Records. The original LP from 1982 was released by Vertigo Records (6483 336, Greece).

The band consisted of Lavrendis Macheritsas (vocals, 12-string guitar, keyboards), Anthony Mitzelos (lead guitar, acoustic guitar), Jimmy Vasalakis (bass, backing vocals), Paul Kikrilis (rhythm and classical guitars) and Tolis Skamatzouras (drums, percussion).

The sound is a captivating progressive mix of acoustic-electric folk and space rock with a strong psychedelic tone and excellent hypnotic vocals. The impressive surrealist cover art is in Salvador Dali's vein. A highly recommended gem!

Saïno is a progressive jazz fusion rock band from Cholet, France, formed by guitarist Rémi Bouchaud and brothers Didier and Philippe Lainé, who remained the only constant members of the band for many years. They started out around 1972 as Poseidon, later changed to Dionysos and finally settled as Saïno, in 1976. The band released its debut instrumental jazz rock album in 1982 which was succeeded, 2 years later, by a more symphonic influenced release which featured Jean-Yves Bouchaud on vocals, titled "Bitume rouge".

Far superior to most instrumental fusion albums coming from Europe during this time, "Saïno" provides much more firepower than expected, plus the melodic content is very high.

The band didn't release any more records but is active, under the same name, as a cover band of hits by English rock groups like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd and similar, having Bouchaud and Lainé brothers still playing live concerts regularly as late as 2018.

Ikarus - Ikarus - 1971 (Krautrock/Progressive Rock {Alemanha})

Ikarus
O banda tinha 6 membros, que eram: Lorenz Köhler (vocal), Wolfgang Kracht (baixo, back vocals), Jochen Petersen (guitarras acústicas e elétricas, sax alto e tenor, flauta, clarinete, back vocal), Bernd Schröder (bateria, percussão), Manfred Schulz (guitarra, vocal e back vocal) e Wulf Dieter Struntz (órgão, piano).

Ikarus was a rather short-lived band from Hamburg, Germany, and only released one album, but stood out in krautrock's growing crowd for developing their own distinctive sound. The band had its roots in a cover band called Beatique in Corporation, founded in 1966, which played covers ranging from Elvis Presley to Tom Jones. Beatique in Corporation changed their musical direction after winning a competition that included them in a compilation entitled "Pop & Blues Festival '70" on MCA Records. The band had 6 members: Lorenz Köhler (vocals), Wolfgang Kracht (bass, back vocals), Jochen Petersen (acoustic and electric guitars, alto and tenor sax, flute, clarinet, back vocals), Bernd Schröder (drums, percussion) ), Manfred Schulz (guitar, vocals and back vocals) and Wulf Dieter Struntz (organ, piano). The group then decides to rename it to Ikarus.

While the German prog scene was separating from the rest of Europe, some bands like Ikarus were more in tune with the British scene than with Can, Amon Düül II or Xhol Caravan. Instead of long atmospheric onslaught in the world of psychedelic madness, Ikarus was yet another united instrumental interaction that created classic blues rock sounds in gigantic progressive classics with jazzy percussion sections and woodwinds, creating one of rock's most eclectic scene albums Germany. The band's only album contained only four tracks, but each one stood out from each other and sometimes makes you wonder if it's really the same band from start to finish. The album shows Ikarus's eclectic musical mastery and how highly trained the musicians were. In "Ikarus", they finally got the chance to leave behind the simplicity of the 60s pop covers and show off their true talents with their own exquisitely designed compositions.

Like many early 70's timeline bands, Ikarus had a firmly planted foot in the late 60's, incorporating psychedelic and heavy psych rock sounds with the latest 70s elements of hard rock, fusion and the symphonic prog that was emerging in the UK.
