Cartoone - Cartoone - 1969 (Psychedelic Rock {Escócia/UK})

Cartoone - Cartoone - 1969 (front)

Eles viajaram por toda a Escócia em apoio a outros atos, como The Tremeloes, The Merseybeats e The Hollies.

Cartoone apareceu na BBC TV em "It's happening for Lulu" (12 de dezembro de 1968) e Top of the Pops (16 de janeiro de 1969) tocando "Penny for the sun".

HISTORY

Cartoone was formed in 1967 from the members of a band called The Chevlons. They toured all over Scotland in support of other acts such as The Tremeloes, The Merseybeats and The Hollies.

In 1968, the band moved to London in hope of landing a recording contract. Through Lulu they contacted songwriter Mark London (husband of Lulu's manager Marion Massey) and showed him some of the songs they had written. London was impressed with the band and their songs and took them into a recording studio to record four songs with just acoustic guitars. London then took those songs to Ahmet Ertegün and Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, who subsequently signed Cartoone to a two-album deal. Cartoone was the first British rock band to sign with Atlantic, predating Led Zeppelin by several months.

The self-titled debut album, featuring Jimmy Page on guitar for several tracks, was released on Atlantic in January 1969. Cartoone appeared on BBC TV on "It's happening for Lulu" (12 December 1968) and Top of the Pops (16 January 1969) performing "Penny for the sun".

In April 1969, Cartoone went to the United States to support Led Zeppelin on tour. After the tour Atlantic Records dropped the band, and refused to release its second album, "Reflections", which featured Leslie Harvey on guitar. Leslie Harvey would go on to be a member of Stone the Crows.

Stone the Crows (Blues Rock {Escócia/UK})

Stone the Crows (photo 01)

Maggie Bell e The Power se apresentaram regularmente no The Easterhouse Project, dirigido por Archie Hind e Graeme Noble.

"Peter escolheu nosso novo nome.
Quando ele disse 'Caramba, apedrejem os corvos!',
pensamos - 'que nome!'. Mas pegou e as pessoas
se lembraram". - Maggie Bell

Jimmy McCulloch toca apenas nas faixas "Good time girl" e "Sunset cowboy".

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Stone the Crows was a Scottish blues rock band formed in Glasgow in late 1969. In addition to Maggie Bell's remarkable vocal performance, the band is also remembered for the onstage electrocution that caused the death of guitarist and founding member Les Harvey.

HISTORY
BEGINNINGS

Maggie Bell was born on January 12, 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland. Coming from a family of musicians, she has been singing since her teens, leaving school at the age of 15 to work as a window dresser by day and singer by night. Maggie Bell was introduced to Leslie Harvey by her older brother Alex Harvey, after taking the stage to sing with Alex. Leslie Harvey was, at that time, guitarist for the Kinning Park Ramblers. Maggie Bell joined the group as one of the vocalists. After the band broke up, she moved on to Sauchiehall Street Locarno's Mecca Band, and later Dennistoun's Palais Band.

She then reunited with Leslie Harvey to form Power - which was initially known as The Power of Music and eventually The Power. Maggie Bell and The Power performed regularly on The Easterhouse Project, directed by Archie Hind and Graeme Noble. They also visited the US Air Force base in Germany in the mid-1960s. The line-up included Les Harvey (guitar), Jim Dewar (bass, ex-Luvvers) and John McGinnis (keyboards). Power became the "house band" at Burn's Howff in Glasgow, and it was there that, one night, Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant watched in amazement as the group performed.

"Peter picked our new name.
When he said 'Cor blimey, stone the crows!',
we thought - 'what a name!'. But it stuck
and people remembered it".  - Maggie Bell

The band then came to be co-managed by Peter Grant and Mark London. Mark London was associated with Scottish singer Lulu, as co-author of her song "To Sir with love", and was also married to Lulu's manager, Marion Massey. Mark London had also managed the band Cartoone, in which Peter Grant had a financial interest and featured Les Harvey on guitar - on the second album, "Reflections", from 1969, which was not released.

The band's first album "Stone the Crows" was released on January 1, 1970 and was recorded at Advision Studios, London. The same studio was used for the recording of the second album, "Ode to John Law", released on June 15 of the same year. Both albums were recorded with the original lineup, and Maggie Bell's vocals have been compared to singer Janis Joplin's vocals. The band's lineup at this time was: Maggie Bell (vocal), Les Harvey (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), James Dewar (bass, vocal) and John McGinnis (keyboards).

SECOND FORMATION AND DEATH ONSTAGE OF LES HARVEY

John McGinnis and James Dewar left the band in 1971, and were replaced by Ronnie Leahy and Steve Thompson. With the new formation, the band records "Teenage licks", released in November 1971. Here, the band changes its style considerably, abandoning blues rock in favor of a more commercial sound. The album was the band's best seller so far, which guaranteed an appearance on the prestigious Top Of The Pops, where they performed playing the track "Big Jim Salter".

In May 1972, while the band were performing at Swansea's Top Rank Suite, guitarist and co-founder Les Harvey was electrocuted onstage. Wires on the group's equipment had been damaged by the public, and although the road crew attempted to repair the damage, they ignored a loose ground wire.

Harvey received an electric shock picking up a microphone as his fingers touched the metal strings of his guitar. His body allegedly flew into the air and came to rest with his guitar in contact with the microphone stand. Bandmates who tried to rescue him allegedly received some of the electrical charge and it was not possible to rescue him until someone kicked his guitar away from the body so that medical staff were able to provide help. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. Jimmy McCulloch subsequently replaced Harvey as guitarist.

With a new guitarist on board, Stone the Crows finished recording their fourth LP, which was already well under way. Jimmy McCulloch only plays on the tracks "Good time girl" and "Sunset cowboy". "Ontinuous performance", was released in September 1972 and was dedicated to the late guitarist Leslie Harvey. In terms of production, this is the band's best album.

AFTER STONE THE CROWS

Stone the Crows finally disbanded in June 1973, and Peter Grant continued to manage Maggie Bell's career. Guided by Grant, Maggie Bell subsequently recorded two solo albums - "Queen of the night" (1974) and "Suicide Sal" (1975) - and an album with the band Midnight Flyer, managed by Grant, which released its first album in 1981 Maggie Bell is also known for her session work on Rod Stewart's 1971 album "Every picture tells a story". Jimmy McCulloch joined Paul McCartney's Wings in Nashville, Tennessee in 1974.

Atlas - Blå vardag - 1979 (Progressive Rock {Suécia})

Atlas - Bla vardag - 1979 (2022, Transubstans Records [front])

In the summer of 1908 the workers in the docks of Malmoe went on strike for better conditions. Malmoe is southern Sweden”s major city and was an important harbour at the time. The police and even the military were called upon to keep things quiet, and the employers brought in British strike-breakers to finish the job. This was considered highly provocative by the striking Swedish workers.

The British workers were temporarily living on a ship called Amalthea. During the early hours of July 12 three young unemployed workers, put a bomb outside Amalthea intending to scare off the strike-breakers. The bomb exploded, killing one and wounding another 23 of the British workers, as some were staying on deck rather than in their cabins. The thres bombers were caught and sentenced to severe punishments. Anton Nilson, who was considered the leader, was sentenced to the death penalty. This was revoked a few years later and Nilson would become a minor legend within the labour movement and the bombing of Amalthea would go down in the history books as one of the defining moments of the Swedish working class. Roughly 70 years later Hoola Bandoola Band's head honcho Mikael Wiehe and Dan Hylander (Ra Montana Band) among others started the Amalthea record label in Malmoe.

Amalthea competed with local pop star Dan Tillberg (Änglabarn) who founded his label Bellatrix at roughly the same time. Both tried to unearth the wealth of talented acts throughout the south of Sweden. Tillberg was also the one who first made contact with Atlas guitarist Janne Persson to inquire about a record deal in early 1978, probably after he had heard them on Swedish radio when it broadcasted a half hour live performance. Tillberg set up a meeting, but wasn't there himself. Instead he sent his sound technician Hasse Hasse Pålsson to sort out the deal with the band.

Atlas had formed at Bergaskolan in Limhamn already in 1973. Limhamn is the southern district of Malmoe Municipality but is more or less regarded as a village within the city of Malmoe. Still in their early teens Atlas played as a true rock band with dual guitars, bass, drums and a Vox organ and performed Deep Purple and Focus covers, as well as self-penned material. The progressive rock influence was evident as Atlas also used flute at times to emulate the signature sound of contemporary acts like Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues and Camel. Erik and Janne were both brought up playing classical piano which are evident during the early days. Inspiration were picked up from many bands, including Yes, Genesis, Kaipa, Weather Report and Wishbone Ash, to name a few.

When Tillberg signed Atlas to Bellatrix the band had had an established line-up since 1976 with Janne Persson (guitar), Björn Ekbom (keyboards), Erik Björn Nielsen (keyboards), Ulf Hedlund (bass) and Michael Pinotti (drums). Tillberg offered them recording time in his Bellatrix studio and a record deal in exchange for 2000 SEK. The Atlas members gladly put up 400 SEK each but were mainly allotted time in the studio at odd hours, when the assigned sound technician Pålsson sometimes was away on his day job for the City theatre. They managed to botrow some high end equipment, including a Minimoog and a Mellotron, which gave the music a symphonic edge. For the title track a Yamaha SY-1 was used, hence its unique sound. The sleeve art was painted by bassist Hedlund. It depicts the wrecking of houses in the centre of Malmoe, one of which contained several rehearsal rooms.

The band played regularly in Malmoe but went no further than the adjacent town of Staffanstorp. There they played alongside White, a local act that had recently signed for Polydor Records and would later release the album "I denna samling". During this time, for an act of this magnitude, you often had to set up everything yourself - book a venue (often with one or two other acts), set up the gear and only get money out of a percentage of what was brought in from entrance fees. When the album finally was released in the autumn of 1979 this would not change.

The album was presumably made in 1200 copies but the band members didn't get any money from sales whatsoever and experienced no augmented interest in their music either. Only a few tiny payments from the Swedish copyright organisation. It had also taken almost a year for the record to hit the market, and by then the band had an almost completely new set of songs on their repertoire.

Atlas disbanded a year later. Partly because Nielsen quit to join the band Rockamöllan, and partly because Pinotti wanted to focus on his sailing career. It was probably a wise decision as he would become world champion twice in the coming years.

Even before Atlas ceased operation the band members had contributed to other projects, and they would do even more after being signed to Bellatrix as Dan Tillberg had Persson to play on Tillberg's "Gatstenar" (1979) as well as on Ferne's first solo album. He also contributed heavily to the "Mosaik" record - co-produced and wrote most of the material - and would later play in Florida Fun with Ekbom. Members of Atlas had backed the all-female band Mixed Media in a live show for Swedish national radio as early as 1974 and did their own live performance on the radio show "Onsdag med ungdomsredaktionen" (translation: "Wednesday with the youth team") in January 1978. Some of them were also brought in as backing musicians on future pop star Niels Jensen's first recordings.

Other similar local acts that would be fortunate enough to get their music pressed onto vinyl at the time were White, Lotus and Radiomöbel. All of which were more or less unknown during the late 70s, but have found a bigger audience and appreciation many years later, often abroad. A fate also bestowed upon Atlas.

Q65 (photo 01)

Dois outros singles alcançaram as paradas holandesas no mesmo ano: "The life I live" (5ª posição) e "I despise you" (19ª posição). Em 1967, eles atingiram as paradas novamente com os singles "From above" (13ª posição) e "World of birds" (8ª posição).

Seus LPs do início dos anos 70, "Afghanistan" e "We are gonna make it", tinham uma orientação mais psicodélica.

1980 A 2010

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Q65 was a psychedelic garage and beat rock band from The Hague, founded in January 1965. The band was known for its raw sound and for being often considered one of the most relevant bands of the Nederbeat rock scene that took place in Holland in the 1960s.

HISTORY
BEGINNINGS

In early 1965, guitarists Joop Roelofs and Frank Nuyens teamed up with singer Willem Bieler to form the band. The line-up was completed with the addition of drummer Jay Baar (ex-Leadbelly's Limited) and bassist Peter Vink. The band's sound was inspired by traditional rhythm and blues and the songs of Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon, as well as new bands such as The Kinks, The Animals and The Rolling Stones. They began performing publicly in the spring of 1965, and later that year would begin using the name Q65. The name is a combination of the songs "Susie Q" and "Route 66", but changed to "65" due to being the year the band was formed and because it sounds better than "66". During a show at the De Eenhoorn skating rink, they met producer Peter Koelewijn. Impressed with the show, he invited them to an audition at Phonogram studio, where they recorded two of their own songs, "And your kind" and "You're the victor". Koelewijn decided to release them on vinyl.

1966 TO 1968: THE GOLDEN YEARS

In January 1966 his debut single "You're the victor" was released and later reached number 11 in the Dutch Top 40 in March 1966. Then Hans van Hemert replaced Koelewijn. Two other singles reached the Dutch charts in the same year: "The life I live" (number 5) and "I despise you" (number 19). Under Van Hemert's guidance, their first album, entitled "Revolution", was released later that year on Decca Records and became a success, selling 35,000 copies in the Netherlands. In 1967 they hit the charts again with the singles "From above" (number 13) and "World of birds" (number 8). Due to problems with drug use and singer Wim Bieler's military service, the band broke up in 1968.

DECADE OF 1970

Q65 reformed in 1970, with Beer Klaasse on drums, and signed to Negram Records, remaining together for several years. Its early '70s LPs "Afghanistan" and "We are gonna make it" were more psychedelic in orientation. Q65's lineup changed throughout the early 1970s. Nuyens left in 1971 to join Baar in a project called Rainman, while Q65 continued with a new lineup, featuring John Frederikz on vocals and Joop van Nimwegen on guitar. Wim Bieler left to form a band called Dambuster. Johnny Frederiksz was hired as lead singer, but the band changed its name to Kjoe.

1980 TO 2010

The original Q65 reunited in 1980 and toured throughout that year. The band continued with various different line-ups into the mid-1980s. Jay Baar died in 1990, but a version of the band, with Wim Bieler as leader, continued playing into the 1990s. Bieler died in 2000. On October 2, 2018, Joop Roelofs, who played guitar and came up with the group's name, has died aged 74.
