Bang (Hard/Heavy Psych Rock {US})

Com certeza uma das bandas mais desconhecidas da história do hard rock americano, Bang lançou três álbuns completos para a Capitol Records no início dos anos 70 (marcando um single de sucesso com "Questions", que chegou a nº 90 na Billboard Hot 100), que afundaram sem deixar vestígios. A Capitol, na época, simplesmente não sabia o que fazer com a banda que costumava ser chamada de "resposta da América ao Black Sabbath".

O primeiro ato significativo da Bang veio quando a banda de Filadélfia invadiu um show de Rod Stewart em Orlando, em 1971, convencendo os promotores a colocá-los como o grupo de abertura. O organizador do concerto pediu-lhes para montar e tocar para ele. Depois de algumas músicas, ele disse que eles iriam abrir para Rod Stewart e The Faces. Antes que eles percebessem, Bang estava tocando com Bachman Turner Overdrive, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, Ike and Tina Turner, The Doobie Brothers e até mesmo Black Sabbath.

O álbum de estréia auto-intitulado de 1971 "Bang" é considerado um importante precursor do gênero doom metal (o blog não concorda com essa comparação). Isto foi seguido pelo monumental álbum “Mother/Bow to the king” em 1972, que deveria ter explodido. Mudanças no pessoal de sua gravadora e uma mudança de formação forçada externamente levaram à frustração e perplexidade antes de lançar seu álbum "Music" de 1973.

O grupo foi brevemente reformado no início dos anos 2000 e gravou mais 2 álbums: "Return to zero" (1999) e "The maze" (2004). Em 2004, o álbum conceitual "Death of a country" foi lançado em CD e LP. Este álbum foi gravado em 1971 e teve a intenção de ser lançado como o primeiro disco da banda, mas foi arquivado pela Capitol Records porque eles acharam que lançar um "álbum conceitual pesado" como estréia da banda, seria comercialmente inviável. Mais tarde naquele ano, seu disco autointitulado foi lançado e se tornou sua estréia oficial.

Em 6 de janeiro de 2014, Bang anunciou sua reunião. O baterista e letrista original Tony Diorio continua contribuindo com as letras, enquanto Matt Calvarese tocou bateria ao vivo.

Em 15 de agosto de 2017, Bang lançou sua autobiografia intitulada "The Bang story: Do porão às luzes brilhantes", escrito por Lawrence Knorr. O livro foi publicado pela Sunbury Press.

Sem dúvida, a mais pesada das bandas "proto-metal" da América do período, Bang também tinha um forte senso de poder melódico, o que deveria levá-la a coisas muito maiores. Altamente considerada como uma banda cult por muitos anos, agora é a hora de uma banda de rock verdadeiramente incrível ser desfrutada por um novo público. Como se pode ouvir, as habilidades de versatilidade e composição da Bang foram (são) incomparáveis.

Surely one of the most unsung bands in the history of American hard rock music, Bang released three full-length albums for Capitol Records in the early 70’s (scoring a hit single with "Questions", which reached # 90 on the Billboard Hot 100), that criminally sank without a trace. Capitol, at the time, just did not know what to do with the band that was often called "America’s answer to Black Sabbath".

Bang‛s first significant act came when the Philadelphia band gatecrashed a Rod Stewart show in Orlando, in 1971 convincing promoters to put them on as the open up's group. The concert organizer asked them to set up and play for him. After a couple songs, he told them they'll were opening for Rod Stewart and The Faces. Before they knew it, Bang was playing with Bachman Turner Overdrive, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, Ike and Tina Turner, The Doobie Brothers and even Black Sabbath. 

The 1971 self-titled debut album “Bang“ is considered an important forerunner to the early doom metal genre (the blog does not agree with this comparison). This was followed by the monumental “Mother/Bow to the king” album in 1972 which should have exploded. Changes in personnel at their record company and an externally forced line-up change led to frustration and bewilderment before releasing their 1973 album “Music“.

The group was briefly reformed in the early 2000s and recorded 2 more albums: "Return to zero" (1999) and "The maze" (2004). In 2004 the concept album "Death of a country" was released on CD and LP. This album was recorded in 1971 and was intended to be released as the band's first record, but was shelved by Capitol Records because they felt that releasing a "heavy conceptual album" as the band's debut would be commercially infeasible. Later that year, its self-titled record was released and became their official debut instead.

On January 6, 2014 Bang announced their reunion. Original drummer and lyricist Tony Diorio continued to contribute lyrics, while Matt Calvarese performed drums live.

On August 15, 2017, Bang released their autobiography entitled "The Bang story: From the basement to the bright lights" written with Lawrence Knorr. The book was published by Sunbury Press.

Undoubtedly the heaviest of America‛s "proto-metal" bands from the period, Bang also had a strong sense of melodic power, which should have led them to much bigger things. Highly regarded as a cult band by many for years, it‛s now time for this truly amazing rock band to be enjoyed by a new audience. As can be heard, the versatility and songwriting skills of Bang were (are) second to none.
