HISTÓRIA

Miki Curtis (Michael Brian Curtis) nasceu de pais ingleses em Tóquio, no Japão, em 23 de julho de 1938. Após o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial, ele viveu cantando nas Forças de Ocupação ou Campos, e como resultado foi aprovado como cantor de rockabilly. Chegando como um Cliff Richard mais credível ou um Screaming Lord Sutch mais mental, o cantor Miki Curtis conseguiu percorrer um caminho de sucesso pelas águas turbulentas e em constante mudança da cena do rock japonês.

Curtis começou sua carreira como imitador de Elvis, em 1958, mas exalou tanto carisma e charme que ele foi imediatamente contratado pela NHK-TV para sediar seu programa pop semanal "The hit parade". Consertando os dentes, arrumando os cabelos para um penteado menos extremo e usando óculos com aro de chifre, Curtis passou os próximos anos neste papel, usando o programa como uma saída ocasional para mostrar seu talento como cantor.

Posteriormente, ele formou a Miki Curtis & Samurais para se manter a par da tendência atual. Sempre pragmático, Curtis levou a banda para a Europa, onde a banda tocou seus pontos fortes japoneses adotando quimonos. A banda também gravou e lançou discos na Alemanha para a Metronome Records, pegando dois músicos britânicos - o guitarrista Joe Dunnett e o organista John Redfern - em Londres. Miki Curtis & Samurais lançou o single "Good morning starshie/Temple of gold" para a United Artists e na Itália "Shu shu/Fresh hot breeze of summer".

Renomeando a banda como Samurai em 1970, para se encaixar na moda predominante do new rock do Japão, Curtis lançou dois LPs interessantes com essa formação - "Samurai" (1970) e "Kappa" (1971) -, os dois sendo fundidos em um para o lançamento britânico pelo selo Philips no ano de 1970, intitulado "Green tea". Ao retornar ao Japão, o baixista Tetsu Yamauchi, que estava preparando um álbum solo, parou as atividades e, depois, se juntou à Free. Depois disso, Miki Curtis temperou suas fixações no prog rock com o LP um pouco mais pop, "Mimi", que ele fez para a Vertigo Records em 1972. Em 1977, Miki havia desistido de qualquer pretensão de ser contemporâneo e retornou às suas raízes no rock'n'roll com seu LP "Live! Rock'n'roll hurricane", contendo covers de clássicos como "Great balls of fire", "Be bop a lula", "Ready Teddy", "Hound dog", "Rock around the clock" e "Runaway" de Del Shannon.

HISTORY

Miki Curtis (Michael Brian Curtis) was born of English parents in Tokyo, Japan, on July 23, 1938. After the end of The World War II he lived by singing in the Occupation Forces or Camps, and as a result he was approved as a rockabilly singer. Arriving as a more credible Cliff Richard or a more mental Screaming Lord Sutch, singer Miki Curtis has succeeded in making a successful path through the turbulent and ever-changing waters of the Japanese rock scene.

Curtis began his career as an Elvis impersonator in 1958, but exuded so much charisma and charm that he was immediately hired by NHK-TV to host his weekly pop show "The hit parade". Fixing his teeth, fixing his hair for a less extreme hairstyle, and wearing horn-rimmed glasses, Curtis spent the next few years in this role, using the show as an occasional outlet to show off his singing talent.

He later formed Miki Curtis & Samurais to keep up with the current trend. And, possessed by a musical approach that went from jazz to soul trumpets, the band scored a number of hits on the main charts, including "Taiyo no pataya", "Fires on the plain", "Wild life", "Bounce ko gals" and "Nothing but loving".

Always pragmatic, Curtis took the band to Europe, where the band played to their Japanese strengths by adopting kimonos. The band also recorded and released records in Germany for Metronome Records, catching two British musicians - guitarist Joe Dunnett and organist John Redfern - in London. Miki Curtis & Samurais released the single "Good morning starshie/Temple of gold" for United Artists and in Italy "Shu shu/Fresh hot breeze of summer".

Renaming the band Samurai in 1970 to fit Japan's prevailing new rock fad, Curtis released two interesting LPs with this lineup - "Samurai" (1970) and "Kappa" (1971) - both merging into one for the British release by Philips in 1970, titled "Green tea". Upon returning to Japan, bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, who was preparing a solo album, stopped activities and then joined Free. After that, Miki Curtis spiced his prog rock fixations with the slightly more pop LP "Mimi", which he made for Vertigo Records in 1972. By 1977, Miki had given up any pretense of being contemporary and returned to his roots in rock'n'roll with his LP "Live! Rock'n'roll hurricane", featuring covers of classics like "Great balls of fire", "Be bop a lula", "Ready Teddy", "Hound dog", "Rock around the clock" and "Runaway" by Del Shannon.
