HISTORY

They signed to one of the biggest British record labels of the time, Chrysalis Records. Racing Cars' debut album produced their single hit single, "They shoot horses, don't they?". The single reached number fourteen on the UK Singles Chart in 1977 and was inspired by the movie "They shoot horses, don't they?". On tour to promote their debut releases, Racing Cars supported Bad Company in 1976, including dates at Earls Court and York Theater Royal. With no other similar appearances on the chart, Racing Cars has finally gained a marvelous status. However, the band was sufficiently established on the tour circuit to release two more albums in 1977 and 1978, which included parts for session pianist Geraint Watkins, American saxophonist Jerry Jumonville, The Bowles Brothers Band on vocal harmonies and Ray Ennis, from Newport, who had already played with a band called Good Habit (do not confuse with Ray Ennis of Swinging Blue Jeans). These have never reached the same commercial heights. Morty and Graham Williams had played together in local bands like Morty and The Frantics and later evolutions, including Strawberry Dust, years earlier. They were well known on the circuit of Welsh clubs.

Racing Cars first broke up in the late 1970s. In 1980 Morty released a solo album, "Love blind". In 1981 Morty joined a band called The Bleeding Hearts with musicians Paul Rosser, Bob Watkins and Dave Iles. When the band broke up, lead singer Morty worked as a backing vocalist for artists such as The Beach Boys, Tina Turner and Bryan Adams. Morty met with local musicians and formed the Gareth Thomas Mortimer Band (GTM Band).

Morty, Graham Hedley Williams and Paul Rosser met as Racing Cars, but said, "We were a bit reluctant. We're a bit long in the tooth and a bit out of touch, but we finally said yes". They continued to perform throughout Europe after retiring in 2000 with a new album, "Bolt from the blue", which was released on DA Records and a concert at Cardiff International Arena.

Racing Cars final album "Second wind" was released in October 2007. Racing Cars performed a concert on April 11, 2009 at the Parc and Dare Theater, Treorchy, and made an appearance at the guitarist's tribute shows. Man Micky Jones band in Pontardawe on September 18, 2010. The band also made a makeover for a one-off concert, Rock at the Park, on Merthyr Tydfil's football ground, but those dates were without Simon Davies.

Gareth Mortimer died on December 17, 2015 at his home in Rhondda, Wales, from cancer at age 66.
