⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Blackhorse was a Texan (Mineral Wells, Texas, US) power trio who operated in the Fort Worth/Dallas area during the seventies. The band, formed in the early 70's, was in the same territory as ZZ Top and Point Blank, playing an almost impeccable "Texan boogie", besides being there or there during the decade, while these two other teams were recording and in tour incessantly.
Gary James had a formidable reputation, and his playing paved the way for many other bands to follow in his footsteps. It is easy to see where other southern bands may have learned a thing or two from watching Blackhorse perform live in many locations throughout the south during that period.
Although we are reflecting on this album years later, its meaning is mentioned in the rock critic Martin Popoff's list of the "100 heaviest albums of the seventies", reaching 75th place in a list that contains Motörhead, AC/DC and Van Halen!
Musically, 09 is stretching the limits of his Texan pedigree. James' guitar work has increased to such an extent that comparisons can be made with Molly Hatchet, Doc Holliday and that unique effort by Freddie Salem and The Wildcats. The album was relaunched in 2013 in CD format, but only 1,000 copies were made available and were originally in the private press.
This album is totally unbelievable in its rich and diabolical guitar riffs and very unique, as it fuses hard rock and a southern touch. It is an incredible album and should be played loud and clear. The album is sure to please fans of Blackfoot, Point Blank and Molly Hatchet. The band is still active and you can also find it at the link below, after this text. Enjoy!
