HISTÓRIA
FORMAÇÃO E INÍCIO (1965-1968)

Ken Elliott tinha 15 anos em 1965, quando seu colega de escola Kieran O'Connor, um baterista, sugeriu que eles montassem uma banda. Ken aprendeu rapidamente a tocar gaita e piano. Kieran também convidou seus amigos Bob Gibbons (guitarra) e Grant Ramsay (baixo) para se juntarem ao grupo. O nome da banda era The Next Collection, e tinha sede em Streatham, no sul de Londres. Ramsay foi substituído por Arthur Kitchener logo depois. Com ele a bordo, a banda venceu a batalha de bandas no rinque de gelo de Streatham e teve o privilégio de fazer uma gravação demo no Maximum Sound Studios. The Next Collection gravou duas músicas durante esta sessão, "A fairy tale" e "Steam tugs". Essas gravações demo foram posteriormente lançadas como faixas bônus na reedição de 2007 do álbum "Reality". Vic Keary, o dono do estúdio, gostou da banda e decidiu se tornar seu produtor.

OS ANOS POLYDOR (1968-1969)

Com o apoio de Keary, a banda assinou com um prestigioso selo da Polydor sob o nome de The Moving Finger (uma referência a um dos poemas de Omar Khayyám). A banda começou a trabalhar em seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, "Reality", com Arthur Kitchener no baixo, mas ele saiu da banda durante as sessões, e o baixista Nick South foi encontrado por meio de um anúncio na Melody Maker. Como resultado, metade das músicas do álbum foram gravadas com Kitchener no baixo e a outra metade com South.

O álbum seria lançado em setembro, mas a Polydor encontrou outra banda chamada The Moving Finger, que já havia lançado um single pela Mercury Records, e então a banda teve que mudar seu nome. Eles chamaram a banda de Second Hand, porque todos os seus instrumentos foram comprados usados. O álbum foi lançado no final de 1968 e falhou devido à total falta de suporte promocional da Polydor.

A Polydor também não lançou um single de apoio. Tudo isso se tornou um motivo para a banda deixar a gravadora.

ALTERAÇÕES NA FORMAÇÃO E NOVO SELO EXPERIMENTAL (1969-1971)

A moral da banda estava baixa e eles embarcaram em uma turnê pela Europa em 1969, esperando que algo mudasse. No entanto, o estilo de vida e a gestão levaram Bob Gibbons a deixar a banda durante a turnê, e seguir sua arte na guitarra rumo ao jazz.

O grupo estava completamente desmoralizado. Oito anos depois de deixar a banda, Bob morreu em 1977 devido a "bronco pneumonia hipostática e supurativa" após dosagem incorreta da medicação prescrita, registrada pelo legista como "misadventure" (no certificado de óbito, fica registrada a "morte por desventura", expressão britânica empregada quando alguém morre devido a um acidente causado por riscos assumidos voluntariamente). Depois de várias turnês pela Europa, Second Hand ganhou alguma popularidade, especialmente na França. A formação mudou novamente: George Hart substituiu Nick South no baixo, e o irmão de Ken, Rob, foi contratado como vocalista independente. Eles gravaram seu segundo álbum de estúdio, "Death may be your Santa Claus", no Chalk Farm Studio em 1970. Vic Keary, que se tornou amigo íntimo da banda, formou seu próprio selo chamado Mushroom e convidou a Second Hand para lançar seu álbum lá. O álbum foi lançado em abril de 1971 com um single de apoio chamado "Funeral", apresentando "Hangin' on an eyelid" como lado B. O álbum teve muito mais sucesso que o anterior, usando um estilo de rock sinfônico pesado obviamente influenciado pela maneira vocal de Arthur Brown (Rob Elliott era um grande fã dele). PROJETO CHILLUM (1971)

Um jovem guitarrista, Tony McGill, foi convidado para gravar o terceiro álbum, mas Rob Elliott deixou a banda logo depois disso. Sua saída colocou todo o projeto em questão, mas Vic persuadiu a banda a gravar o álbum exatamente como foi planejado originalmente. Um álbum experimental foi gravado em um dia e lançado no final de 1971. Os membros da banda decidiram indicar "Chillum" tanto como o nome do artista quanto como o título do álbum - chillum é como é conhecido o cone vazado, normalmente feito de cerâmica ou pedra, de tamanho variável e usado para fumar o haxixe, ou Charas como é chamado na Índia, e é muito utilizado na Índia em rituais de adoração ao deus Shiva, pelos Sadhus, homens santos. O álbum passou despercebido e Ken Elliott decidiu separar a Second Hand no início de 1972.

PÓS-SECOND HAND

Ken Elliott e Kieran O'Connor passaram a tocar com o grupo Seventh Wave e lançaram vários álbuns. O'Connor morreu de alcoolismo em 1991. Bob Gibbons, como mencionado acima, morreu de "morte por desventura" em 1977.

HISTORY

FORMATION AND EARLY YEARS (1965-1968)

Ken Elliott was 15 in 1965, when his schoolmate Kieran O'Connor, a drummer, suggested that they set up a band. Ken quickly learned to play the harmonica and the piano. Kieran also asked his friends Bob Gibbons (guitar) and Grant Ramsay (bass) to join the group. The band's name was The Next Collection, and was based in Streatham, South London. Ramsay was replaced by Arthur Kitchener soon afterwards. With him on board, the band won the Streatham ice rink battle of the bands and were awarded the privilege to make a demo recording at Maximum Sound Studios. The Next Collection recorded two songs during this session, "A fairy tale" and "Steam tugs". These demo recordings were later released as bonus tracks to the 2007 reissue of the album "Reality". Vic Keary, the owner of the studio, liked the band and decided to become their producer.

THE POLYDOR YEARS (1968-1969)

With Keary's support, the band signed to a prestigious Polydor label under the name The Moving Finger (a reference to one of the Omar Khayyám poems). The band started working on their first studio album, "Reality", with Arthur Kitchener on bass, but he quit the band during the sessions, and the bassist Nick South was found through an ad in Melody Maker. As a result, half of the songs on the album were recorded with Kitchener on the bass, and the other half with South.

The album was to be released in September, but Polydor found other band called The Moving Finger, whom had already released a single on Mercury Records, and so the band had to change its name. They named the band Second Hand, 'cause all their instruments had been bought used. The album was released at the end of 1968 and failed because of complete lack of promotional support by Polydor.

Polydor also did not release a supporting single. All this became a reason for the band to leave the label.

LINE-UP CHANGES AND NEW EXPERIMENTAL LABEL (1969-1971)

The band's morale was low, and they embarked on a tour of Europe in 1969, hoping that something would change. However, the lifestyle and management prompted Bob Gibbons to leave the band during the tour, and pursue his guitar art in the direction of jazz.

The group was completely demoralised. Eight years after leaving the band, Bob died in 1977 due to "hypostatic and suppurative broncho pneumonia" following mis-dosage of prescribed medication, recorded by the Coroner as misadventure (in the death certificate, is registered as a "misadventure", a British expression used when someone dies due to an accident caused by voluntarily assumed risks). False stories of suicide were put about to foster a "rock 'n' roll image" for the band, rather than the truth. Should the Coroner have at all suspected suicide, that verdict would have been recorded instead of misadventure.

After several tours throughout Europe, Second Hand gained some popularity, especially in France. The line-up changed again: George Hart replaced Nick South on the bass, and Ken's brother Rob was engaged as a freestanding vocalist. They went on to record their second studio album, "Death may be your Santa Claus", at Chalk Farm Studio in 1970. Vic Keary, who became the band's close friend, formed his own label called Mushroom and invited Second Hand to release their album there. The album was released in April 1971 with a supporting single called "Funeral", featuring "Hangin' on an eyelid" as the B-side. The album was far more successful than the previous one, using a heavy symphonic rock style obviously influenced by Arthur Brown's vocal manner (Rob Elliott was a big fan of him). The album was recorded without a guitarist - as Ken Elliott said: "Gibbons was irreplaceable". Moogy Mead, a session guitarist, was only involved in one song. However, all this did not make the band really famous.

CHILLUM PROJECT (1971)

The band retired from touring and did not give any more live performances: all of this looked like the beginning of the end. A young guitarist, Tony McGill, was invited to record the third album, but Rob Elliott left the band shortly after that. His departure called the entire project into question, but Vic persuaded the band to record the album just as it was planned originally. An experimental jam album was recorded in one day and released in late 1971. The band members decided to indicate "Chillum" both as the artist name and the album title - chillum is what is known as the hollow cone, usually made of pottery or stone, of variable size and used to smoke hashish, or Charas as it is called in India, and is widely used in India in rituals of worship to the god Shiva, by Sadhus, holy men. The album went unnoticed, and Ken Elliott decided to disband Second Hand in early 1972.

POST SECOND HAND

Ken Elliott and Kieran O'Connor went on to play with the group Seventh Wave and released several albums. O'Connor died of alcoholism in 1991. Bob Gibbons, as mentioned above, died of misadventure in 1977.
