A Coupla Prog foi uma daquelas bandas obscuras da década de 70 que não chegou a lançar nem sequer um só LP durante a sua existência. Porém, deve-se destacar o fato de que a banda foi convidada cerca de quatro vezes (nenhuma outra banda foi convidada com tanta frequência) pelo editor e apresentador responsável da SWF, Walther Krause - durante o período de 1970 a 1972 - para produzir sua música em condições de estudo. A banda tinha excelentes músicos. Sua música era livre, não-comercial, mundana. Abaixo está um pouco de sua história e os três álbumsa lançados pelo selo Long Hair com as gravações das sessões realizadas no Studio U1 da Radio Südwestfunk.

HISTÓRIA

Coupla Prog de Baden-Baden, Alemanha é conhecida por uma mistura de krautrock e blues-rock pesado, cheio de suspense, teatral em partes, com um senso derivado de profissionalismo. A banda existiu por quase sete anos e atingiu o auge de 1970 a 1972 com certeza sendo homogênea com seu estilo e sem qualquer abordagem comercial. A precursora, chamada Wilde Reiter GmbH, tocou covers simples de soul/rock e se separou em 1969. Para compor algo radicalmente novo, a Coupla Prog foi fundada por quatro membros: Hubert Donauer (bateria), Reiner Niketta (baixo, piano, vocal), Rolf Peters (guitarra, vocais), Wolfgang Schindhelm (órgão, guitarra, trompete, vocais). O novo nome da banda resulta de uma versão abreviada de "A Couple of Progs".

O material completo da banda é tocado ao vivo, puro, sem retrabalho e overdubbing, resultado de quatro sessões gravadas no Studio U1 da Radio Südwestfunk entre 1970 e 1972. O primeiro lançamento do selo alemão Long Hair Music é o álbum "Sprite" com gravações de fevereiro de 1970 e abril de 1971, fortemente influenciadas pela nova fase experimental pós-beat.

A peça central da Coupla Prog surge com a ópera progressiva "Edmundo Lopez". Vocal-orientado porque conta a história de um jovem que vive na América do Sul e fica entre as linhas inimigas de uma guerra civil. Este opus de 60 minutos, finalmente lançado em 2000, contém 11 canções que se misturam. Tematicamente uma história emocionante com partes encharcadas de Hammond lembrando Vanilla Fudge ou Procul Harum, mas também contendo momentos sinfônicos e psicodélicos de krautrock.

Algumas mudanças na formação ocorreram mais tarde. Peters, o cérebro criativo, responsável pelo conceito de "Edmundo Lopez", infelizmente morreu aos 21 anos por causa de uma overdose de álcool e drogas em julho de 1971. Os membros restantes, Wolfgang Schindhelm (órgão, piano e vocais), Reiner Niketta (baixo, órgão e piano) e Hubert Donauer (bateria), levaram alguns meses para lidar com o choque de sua perda. Eles decidiram tentar de qualquer maneira e recrutaram um amigo de Schindhelm, Walter Kümmich, como o novo guitarrista. Os vocais foram compartilhados entre Schindhelm e Niketta, que começaram a escrever novo material juntos. No final do ano a banda estava pronta para tocar um set ao vivo de material novo e antigo. No início de 1972, o baterista e membro fundador Hubert Donauer deixou a banda e, para a sessão do SWF-Studio U1 em 18/02/1972 Reinhold Hirt, que desde então fez carreira como músico profissional (entre outros Hubert K.), foi convocado.

Com esses dois novos membros a banda conseguiu gravar algumas músicas novas com destaque para "Death is a great gambler, but if I win, finally I can die" ("A morte é um grande apostador, mas se eu ganhar, finalmente posso morrer"), escrito em memorial de Rolf Peters, cuja morte foi uma grande perda para a banda. Assim, a última sessão de SWF lançada por Long Hair contém uma mistura de músicas gravadas com, mas também sem Peters, incluindo uma interpretação muito livre de "Season of the witch" de Donovan.

Coupla Prog tentou seguir em frente por alguns anos, mas ocorreu estagnação e divergências sobre a direção musical, os membros mudaram para outras regiões e, finalmente, falta de motivações forçaram a dissolução assustadora até o final. A história da banda foi encerrada no início de 1976.

Coupla Prog was one of those obscure bands from the 70's that didn't even release a single LP during its existence. However, it should be noted the fact that the band was invited about four times (no other band was invited so often) by SWF editor and presenter in charge Walther Krause - during the period from 1970 to 1972 - to produce their music under study conditions. The band had excellent musicians. Its music was free, non-commercial, mundane. Below is a little bit of their history and the three albums released by the Long Hair label with recordings from the sessions held at Radio Südwestfunk's Studio U1.

HISTORY

Coupla Prog from Baden-Baden, Germany is known for a melange of krautrock and heavy blues-rock, full of suspense, theatrical in parts, with a derivative sense of professionality. The band existed for nearly seven years and reached the peak from 1970 to 1972 for sure being homogenous with its style and without any commercial approach. The forerunner, named Wilde Reiter GmbH, played simple soul/rock covers and split in 1969. To compose something radically new Coupla Prog was founded by four members: Hubert Donauer (drums), Reiner Niketta (bass, piano, vocals), Rolf Peters (guitar, vocals), Wolfgang Schindhelm (organ, guitar, trumpet, vocals). The new band name results from a shortened version of "A Couple of Progs".

The band's complete material is live played, pure, without reworking and overdubbing, the result of four sessions recorded at studio U1 of Radio Südwestfunk between 1970 and 1972. The first release by the german Long Hair Music label is the album "Sprite" with early recordings from February 1970 and April 1971, strongly influenced by the new experimental post-beat phase.

Coupla Prog's centerpiece comes up with the progressive opera "Edmundo Lopez". Vocal-oriented because telling the story about a young man who lives in South America and gets between the enemy lines of a civil war. This 60 minute opus, finally released in 2000, contains 11 songs which are blending into each other. Thematically a gripping story with Hammond drenched parts remembering at Vanilla Fudge or Procul Harum but also containing symphonic and freakish psychedelic krautrock moments.

Some lineup changes took place later. Peters, the creative brain behind the concept of "Edmundo Lopez", sadly died at age 21 of an alcohol and drug overdose in July 1971. Remaining members Wolfgang Schindhelm (organ, piano and vocals), Reiner Niketta (bass, organ and piano) and Hubert Donauer (drums), it took a few months to come to terms with the shock of their loss. They decided to try anyway and recruited a friend of Schindhelm's, Walter Kümmich, as the new guitarist. Vocals were shared between Schindhelm and Niketta, who began writing new material together. By the end of the year the band was ready to play a live set of old and new material. It was also time to get into the studio and it was of great help to Coupla Prog that they were, along with Fashion Pink (Long Hair LHC 3), one of SWF producer Walther Krause's favorite bands, resulting in him booking the band for the SWF's studio. In early 1972, drummer and founding member Hubert Donauer left the band, and for the SWF-Studio U1 session on 02/18/1972 Reinhold Hirt, who has since pursued a career as a professional musician (among others Hubert K.), was summoned.

With these two new members the band managed to record some new songs, most notably "Death is a great gambler, but if I win, finally I can die", written in memorial to Rolf Peters, whose death was a great loss to the band. So the latest SWF session released by Long Hair contains a mix of songs recorded with, but also without, Peters, including a very free rendition of Donovan's "Season of the witch".

Coupla Prog tried to move on for some years but stagnation and differences about the musical direction occured, members changed to other regions and finally missing motivations forced the creeeping disbanding until the end. The band's story was closed early 1976.
