Snowball (Progressive Jazz Funk Fusion Rock {Alemanha})

Snowball foi uma banda alemã de jazz-rock composta por músicos britânicos, alemães e americanos. Os membros fundadores foram Curt Cress (bateria, ex-Passport), Dave King (baixo, ex-Embryo), Kristian Schultze (teclados, ex-Passport) e Roye Albrighton (guitarra, vocal - Nektar). A banda tocou um jazz-rock progressivo orientado para o funk semelhante a Passport, com um toque mais rock.

HISTÓRIA

O baterista da Passport Curt Cress e o baixista Dave King fundaram o grupo Snowball em outubro de 1977. O aprimoramento de primeira classe eles encontraram no tecladista Kristian Schultze, bem como no guitarrista da Nektar, Roye Albrighton. Assim nascia um novo supergrupo.

O feedback entusiasmado juntou-se à nova banda desde o primeiro minuto: o álbum de estréia "Defroster" (publicado em 1978 na WEA) poderia atender a todas as comparações internacionais. O mercado da música contou com a Snowball - além da Doldinger's Passport - como os mais importantes embaixadores do rock desafiador.

Em 1978, Roye Albrighton saiu e o guitarrista Frank Diez se juntou ao grupo. Ele ainda esteve disponível durante algumas gravações para o segundo álbum, "Cold heat" (1979, WEA), mas foi substituído por Günter Gebauer, um profissional de estúdio muito experiente. Outra adição valiosa foi Edward Taylor (vocais, sax). Com este novo elenco de 1979, o segundo álbum, "Cold heat", foi desenvolvido. Um álbum incrível - que a banda mais tarde também apresentou ao vivo, entre outros durante o Snowball-Tour'79 -, que foi apresentado pelo Teen-Mag Rocky e que levou a banda por toda a Alemanha.

No início de 1980, Snowball estava novamente em estúdio para gravar o terceiro álbum. Depois do álbum de estréia jazzístico e do segundo álbum de cariz funky, Curt Cress e os seus rapazes regressaram às raízes: o novo álbum será o mais "rocker" do repertório Snowball. Muito desta responsabilidade veio do novo guitarrista Roykey Wydh e do baixista Wally Warning. Os títulos do álbum foram escritos em equipe e gravados ao vivo no estúdio. Eles rejeitaram completamente as gravações individuais dos instrumentos, fazendo depois as alterações necessárias. Como de costume eles excursionaram com o novo álbum na bagagem (agora Johnny Davies tocando baixo). E, como de costume com esta banda, a resposta foi esmagadora. O Süddeutsche Zeitung (importante jornal diário alemão), por exemplo, definiu a banda Snowball como "idéias brilhantes, gags de instrumentação e fogo rítmico!" Infelizmente "Follow the white line" também significou o fim do Snowball.

Em 16/12/1981 aconteceu o último show (já sem o membro fundador Kristian Schultze). As várias mudanças do elenco, especialmente a falta de alvos coletivos desses músicos destacados, levaram ao rompimento da banda, que (junto com Randy Pie) oferecia música rock orientada para o funk sem qualquer concorrência na Alemanha.

Snowball was a German jazz-rock band consisting of British, German and American musicians. The founding members were Curt Cress (drums, ex-Passport), Dave King (bass, ex-Embryo), Kristian Schultze (keyboards, ex-Passport) and Roye Albrighton (guitar, vocals - Nektar). The band played a funk-oriented progressive jazz-rock similar to Passport, with a more rock edge.

HISTORY

Passport drummer Curt Cress and bassist Dave King founded the group Snowball in October 1977. First-class improvement they found in keyboardist Kristian Schultze as well as Nektar guitarist Roye Albrighton. Thus was born a new supergroup.

Enthusiastic feedback joined the new band from the first minute: the debut album "Defroster" (published in 1978 in WEA) could meet all international comparisons. The music market has counted Snowball - in addition to Doldinger's Passport - as the most important ambassadors of challenging rock.

In 1978, Roye Albrighton left and guitarist Frank Diez joined the group. He was still available during some recordings for the second album, "Cold heat" (1979, WEA), but was replaced by Günter Gebauer, a very experienced studio professional. Another valuable addition was Edward Taylor (vocals, sax). With this new cast from 1979, the second album, "Cold heat", was developed. An amazing album - which the band later also performed live, among others during the Snowball-Tour '79 - which was presented by Teen-Mag Rocky and which took the band all over Germany.

In the early 1980s, Snowball was back in the studio to record their third album. After the jazzy debut album and the funky second album, Curt Cress and his boys went back to their roots: the new album will be the most "rocker" of the Snowball repertoire. Much of this responsibility came from new guitarist Roykey Wydh and bassist Wally Warning. The album titles were written as a team and recorded live in the studio. They completely rejected the individual recordings of the instruments, making the necessary changes afterwards. As usual they toured with the new album in their luggage (now Johnny Davies playing bass). And, as usual with this band, the response was overwhelming. The Süddeutsche Zeitung (a leading German daily newspaper), for example, defined the band Snowball as "sparkling ideas, instrumentation gags, and rhytmic fire!" Unfortunately "Follow the white line" also meant the end of Snowball.

On 12/16/1981 the last show took place (already without founding member Kristian Schultze). The various cast changes, especially the lack of collective targets of these outstanding musicians, led to the breakup of the band, which (along with Randy Pie) offered funk-oriented rock music without any competition in Germany.
