Arakawa Band - Lena - 1980 (Jazz Fusion {Japão})

A Arakawa Band foi uma banda de jazz fusion que lançou dois álbuns, "Lena" (1980) e "Hard boiled" (1981), além de um álbum em parceria com o tocador e construtor americano de shakuhachi (flauta japonesa de bambu) John Kaizan Neptune, intitulado "Bamboo".

HISTÓRIA

Formada em 1975, o nome original era The Great American Music Band. O líder, Tatsuhiko Arakawa, era um saxofonista, flautista e clarinetista que já atuava em várias big bands desde a década de 1960. Em 1970, ele formou seu próprio quinteto em Osaka. Em 1974, ele foi para os Estados Unidos para estudar arranjo em Los Angeles e San Francisco, e formou a The Great American Music Band após retornar ao Japão.

Após ter uma de suas obras executada pela Tokyo Union Orchestra, que se apresentou no Festival de Jazz de Montreux, em 1978, o nome de Tatsuhiko Arakawa passou a se tornar ainda mais conhecido. Então, em 1980 o grupo decide mudar o nome para Arakawa Band.

A banda era formada por Tatsuhiko Arakawa (sax tenor, flauta), Shoji Maeda (flauta), Hitoshi Okano (trompete), Toshio Araki (flugelhorn), Osamu Shiomura (trombone), Teiji Mihata (guitarra), Akihiro Miyaura (piano, teclados, sintetizador), Kenji Satoh (teclados, sintetizador), Yoshinori Nohmi (percussão), Koh Tsubota (baixo elétrico), Shigeru Inoue (bateria) e Kazuaki Misago (bateria). Shoji Maeda, Hitoshi Okano e Osamu Shiomura eram membros de outras bandas famosas. Shoji Maeda e Yoshinori Nohmi eram ex-membros da Tokyo Cuban Boys, que se separou em 1980.

Além desses 12 regulares, os músicos Chuji Nagaoka (guitarra) e Tatsuji Deguchi (vibrafone) também participaram no álbum, que foi lançado originalmente em 1980 pelo selo Better Days (YX-7249-ND). Quatro das seis canções do álbum foram escritas por Arakawa. "Lena", que se tornou o título do álbum, é uma homenagem à filha amada do guitarrista Teiji Mihata. O álbum também apresenta um cover da música "Night flight" do álbum "Back to back", de 1976, da The Brecker Brothers Band. Mas, por alguma razão, essa obra não recebeu muita atenção na época.

Em 1981, após algumas mudanças de membros, o 2º álbum, "Hard boiled", foi lançado - agora sob o nome Arakawa Band featuring Hitoshi Okano - também pelo selo Better Days (YF-7009-ND). Mas, devido às más vendas dos álbums, o grupo não pode continuar junto. Tatsuhiko Arakawa voltou ao trabalho de sessão e se envolveu na composição de várias gravações e músicas de palco, enquanto Hitoshi Okano lançou seu trabalho principal "Double image". Os outros membros também se dispersaram para trabalhar como músicos de sessão.

Em 26 de junho de 2013,  o álbum "Lena" foi relançado em formato CD, de edição limitada, pela Columbia Records (COCB-54069).

HISTORY

Formed in 1975, the original name was The Great American Music Band. The leader, Tatsuhiko Arakawa, was a saxophonist, flutist and clarinetist who had been active in various big bands since the 1960s. In 1970, he formed his own quintet in Osaka. In 1974, he went to the United States to study arranging in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and formed The Great American Music Band after returning to Japan.

After having one of his works performed by the Tokyo Union Orchestra, which was performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978, the name of Tatsuhiko Arakawa became even better known. So, in 1980 the group decides to change the name to Arakawa Band.

The band consisted of Tatsuhiko Arakawa (tenor sax, flute), Shoji Maeda (flute), Hitoshi Okano (trumpet), Toshio Araki (flugelhorn), Osamu Shiomura (trombone), Teiji Mihata (guitar), Akihiro Miyaura (piano, keyboards , synthesizer), Kenji Satoh (keyboards, synthesizer), Yoshinori Nohmi (percussion), Koh Tsubota (electric bass), Shigeru Inoue (drums) and Kazuaki Misago (drums). Shoji Maeda, Hitoshi Okano and Osamu Shiomura were members of other famous bands. Shoji Maeda and Yoshinori Nohmi were former members of Tokyo Cuban Boys, which disbanded in 1980.

In addition to these 12 regulars, musicians Chuji Nagaoka (guitar) and Tatsuji Deguchi (vibraphone) also participated in the album, which was originally released in 1980 on the Better Days label (YX-7249-ND). Four of the six songs on the album were written by Arakawa. "Lena", which became the title of the album, is a tribute to guitarist Teiji Mihata's beloved daughter. But, for some reason, this work did not receive much attention at the time.

In 1981, after some member changes, the 2nd album, "Hard boiled", was released - now under the name Arakawa Band featuring Hitoshi Okano - also on the Better Days label (YF-7009-ND). But, due to poor album sales, the group could not continue together. Tatsuhiko Arakawa returned to session work and was involved in composing various recordings and stage music, while Hitoshi Okano released his main work "Double image". The other members also dispersed to work as session musicians.

On June 26, 2013, the album "Lena" was re-released in limited edition CD format by Columbia Records (COCB-54069).
