HISTÓRIA

Gila, formada no início de 1969 em Stuttgart, foi uma das melhores e mais conhecidas bandas de rock progressivo alemão. A formação inicial era: Fritz Scheyhing (nascido em Schmie perto de Maulbronn em 2 de outubro de 1944) no mellotron e órgão, Walter Wiederkehr da Suíça no baixo, Daniel Alluno de Bordeaux na bateria e Wolf Conrad "Conny" Veit (nascido em 6 de maio de 1949, em Stuttgart) na guitarra e como cantor. Ele fingiu ser parente do conhecido ator alemão Conrad Veidt (1893-1943) e, portanto, seu nome na capa do disco está escrito "Veidt".

Em 1970, antes mesmo de gravar seu primeiro disco, Gila foi convidada pela emissora de TV da Baviera para filmar um show inteiro de Karl-Ludwig Reichert que seria exibido em uma série de TV. No entanto, por razões desconhecidas, nada aconteceu. Infelizmente, essas gravações não foram armazenadas nos arquivos. Em 1971, foi lançado o primeiro LP da banda: "Gila" (BASF 2021109-6), com o subtítulo "Free electric sound". A apresentação do LP foi nobre, vindo em capa de papelão e com um pôster. A fotografia da capa interna foi tirada por Bernd Neumann e mostra (da esquerda para a direita) Conny Veit, Daniel Alluno, Walter Wiederkehr e Fritz Scheyhing.

Em 26 de fevereiro de 1972, Gila fez um show em Colônia que foi transmitido ao vivo pelo rádio. A performance seria lançada 27 anos depois, pelo selo Garden of Delights (CD 035), sob o título "Night works". Quanto à ordem cronológica de suas gravações, este foi o segundo trabalho da Gila. Após a separação da primeira formação da Gila em 1972, Conny Veit juntou-se a Popol Vuh onde colaborou nos discos "Hosianna mantra" (Pilz 2029143-1), gravado em 1972 e lançado em 1973, e "Aguirre", gravado entre 1972 e 1974, mas lançado apenas em 1976. E ele ainda era um membro quando eles fizeram "Seligpreisungen" (Kosmische Musik KM 58.009) em 1974.

Mas, mesmo antes, ele começou a sentir uma saudade renovada de Gila e partiu para refundar a banda. Ele conseguiu convencer Florian Fricke a tocar teclado e Daniel Fichelscher a tocar bateria (ambos da Popol Vuh) e Sabine Merbach a ser a vocalista. HISTORY

Gila, formed in early 1969 in Stuttgart, was one of the best, and best-known, bands of German progressive rock. The initial line-up was: Fritz Scheyhing (born in Schmie near Maulbronn on 2 October 1944) on mellotron and organ, Walter Wiederkehr from Switzerland on bass, Daniel Alluno from Bordeaux on drums and Wolf Conrad "Conny" Veit (born May 6, 1949, in Stuttgart) on guitar and as singer. He pretended to be a relative of the well-known German actor, Conrad Veidt (1893- 1943), and thus his name on the record cover is spelled "Veidt".

In 1970, even before recording its first record, Gila was invited by the Bavarian TV station to have an entire gig filmed by Karl-Ludwig Reichert which was meant to be shown in a TV series. Yet, for unknown reasons nothing came of it. Unfortunately, these recordings were not stored in the archives. In 1971, the band's first LP was released: "Gila" (BASF 2021109-6), subtitled "Free electric sound". The LP presentation was noble, coming in a gatefold cover and with a poster. The photograph on the inside cover was taken by Bernd Neumann and shows (from left to right) Conny Veit, Daniel Alluno, Walter Wiederkehr, and Fritz Scheyhing.

On February 26, 1972, Gila played a gig in Cologne that was broadcast live on the radio. The performance would be released 27 years later, on the Garden of Delights label (CD 035), under the title "Night works". As to the chronological order of its recordings, this was Gila's second work. After the break-up of the first Gila line-up in 1972, Conny Veit joined Popol Vuh where he collaborated on the records "Hosianna mantra" (Pilz 2029143-1), recorded in 1972 and released in 1973, and "Aguirre", recorded between 1972 and 1974 but released only in 1976. And he was still a member when they did "Seligpreisungen" (Kosmische Musik KM 58.009) in 1974.

But, even before, he had begun to feel a renewed longing for Gila, and had set out to refound the band. He managed to convince Florian Fricke to play the keyboards and Daniel Fichelscher to play the drums (both from Popol Vuh) as well as Sabine Merbach to be the vocalist. In the summer of 1973, this line-up released the LP "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee" (Warner Bros. WB 46234), which was again recorded at Dieter Dierks' studio in Stommeln and was, again, very good. The album was inspired by Dee Brown's book of the same title and deals with the expulsion and extermination of native Americans. It also features three American Indian texts.

When, after its two records, Gila eventually split in the summer of 1974, Florian Fricke and Daniel Fichelscher concentrated on Popol Vuh again. Conny Veit, touring in France with Amon Düül II in the winter of 1973 and 1974, joined Guru Guru for a short while in late 1974. Later he founded Coney Island, together with Zabba Lindner (Sphinx Tush, Tomorrow's Gift, Release Music Orchestra, Es), Karl-Heinz Schott (Frumpy, Atlantis), Siddhatta Gautama (Electric Sun, Nine Days Wonder) and others. Today, Conny Veit works as a freelance painter in Hamburg. Sabine Merbach died from liver failure owing to her alcoholism.
