Kalacakra (Psych/Prog/Raga/Experimental/Ambient {Alemanha})

Kalacakra (o "c" deve ser pronunciado "tch", como em "stitch") é tibetano e significa "Roda do tempo", nome de dois amigos de Duisburg, no oeste da Alemanha, que dividiram um apartamento no bairro de Hochfeld por um ano, adotado para seu empreendimento musical, o primeiro do gênero para Claus Rauschenbach (guitarra, congas e outros tipos de percussão, harmonica e vocal).

Heinz Martin (nascido em Remscheid em 26 de abril de 1949) na guitarra elétrica, flauta, shawm, violino, violoncelo, piano, vibrafone e sintetizador já havia adquirido muita experiência de palco ao tocar com a Below Three, uma banda no estilo de Jimi Hendrix e Vanilla Fudge, que apoiaram a The Move e outras. Ele também ajudou a banda norueguesa Beatniks, que mais tarde seria conhecida pelo nome de Titanic, como guitarrista na França por um mês e tocou com Bill Brown, que mais tarde se juntou a Eiliff.

 

Na época, ele tinha uma loja de instrumentos musicais e antiguidades indianas. Kalacakra foi sua idéia e ele era o líder e chefe musical da banda. A sua forte inclinação para o Oriente, o Extremo Oriente e especialmente o Tibete influenciou toda a sua criatividade musical. Depois de algumas sessões de demonstração em seu loft, durante as quais foram tiradas a maioria das fotografias incluídas neste livreto, eles foram para o estúdio Willy Neubauer em Düsseldorf em 1972, onde Dom gravou seu longplayer "Edge of time" no mesmo ano. Em um equipamento de oito pistas, gravaram o LP "Crawling to Lhasa" (ST-K 2000), que eles próprios lançaram, fabricado pela Pallas em Diepholz, com tiragem de 1000 exemplares. O ano de lançamento, 1972, foi apoiado por evidências convincentes, de modo que as fontes que mencionam os anos de 1971, 1974 e 1977 estão todas erradas.

A propósito: Lhasa é a capital do Tibete. Heinz Martin escreveu a música e Claus Rauschenbach contribuiu com as letras. O número de ordem acima só pode ser encontrado entre o segundo turno, o que significa que o K-ST 2000, um número citado em quase todos os livros, está errado. Parece que todo mundo adotou esse erro por causa da discografia um tanto defeituosa de Achim Groh, "Aus deutschen Landen" (Mannheim 1992), fenômeno bastante frequente até mesmo em trabalhos científicos. Apenas o livreto da edição em CD da Garden of Delights menciona o número de pedido correto e, desde então, também o banco de dados "Aga's DB" (Thors Hammer THCD-ROM 01) e a terceira edição melhorada do "Cosmic price guide" (Wohltorf/Hamburgo 2008) por Ulrich Klatte. "ST" aparentemente significa estéreo, "K" para Kalacakra. A capa não era dobrada e colada, mas consistia apenas em um pedaço retangular de papelão ondulado, dobrado ao meio, semelhante ao primeiro LP da Emtidi e aos antigos singles suecos de 7", o que significa que o disco teria caído sem sua capa transparente. bolsa protetora A frente e o verso da capa apresentam o mesmo desenho preto sobre fundo branco, com o título e o nome da banda aparecendo apenas na frente.

O desenho, uma Mandala, também representando a roda do tempo tibetana, é obra de um amigo americano deles. A parte direita do interior é totalmente branca, enquanto alguns detalhes do disco e da formação são mencionados à esquerda. A etiqueta em si é branca com letras pretas. O instrumento slenthem mencionado na capa é um metalofone de Java, semelhante a um vibrafone. Mas Claus Rauschenbach listou-o apenas por diversão - na realidade ele nunca tocou tal instrumento.

Os amantes da música psicodélica irão apreciar particularmente a primeira faixa, "Nearby Shiras", com a sua atmosfera sombria e secreta. Muitos séculos atrás, a peste assolou esta cidade central da Pérsia, e esse é o tema desta faixa. A impressionante terceira peça, "Raga nº 11", é provavelmente a melhor, enquanto "Tante Olga" parece um tanto estranha, já que muitos ouvintes acharão que é muito blues. Arapaho, aliás, é um nome de índio americano. A música "Tante Olga" [tia Olga], faz referência a um bar de mesmo nome. Estava situado em Duisburg-Ruhrort e era administrado pela tia de Heinz Martin, Olga.

Três amigos ajudaram a banda no financiamento da produção do disco, um deles um certo Rudi, que em troca recebeu algumas centenas de LPs da Kalacakra que ele poderia vender em sua loja de discos em Duisburg, Rock on. Quando a loja faliu em meados da década de 1970, Reiner Seehöfer assumiu o controle do estoque de sua própria loja de discos em Duisburg, Die Schallplatte, situada em 12 Sonnenwall. Foi aí que Heinz Martin mais tarde viu seus LPs serem oferecidos em uma pechincha por apenas três marcos alemães cada. O principal motivo para essa falta de procura era que a banda era basicamente desconhecida, já que fazia poucos shows, um deles como suporte para a banda de Duisburg Bröselmaschine. A própria banda bagunçou sua maior oportunidade de alcançar um avanço: a Academia de Arte de Düsseldorf se interessou por Kalacakra e a convidou para participar de uma turnê de exposição por Londres, Buenos Aires e Düsseldorf. Ela deveria fazer dez shows em cada cidade por 150 marcos alemães por cabeça, mas Claus Rauschenbach preferiu tirar férias na ilha de Ibiza, o que significou o fim do compartilhamento de apartamento e o fim da Kalacakra.

Quando, com o passar do tempo, os colecionadores de discos perceberam que joia psicodélica havia para descobrir, o preço do LP foi subindo cada vez mais. No seu livro "1001 record collector dreams" (Viena 1997), Hans Pokora atribui-lhe três unidades, correspondendo a um preço entre 180 e 330 €. O "Cosmic price guide" lista-o com 400 €, o catálogo de preços 2017 da revista alemã de colecionadores de discos "Oldie-Markt" com 274,20 €, "Aga’s DB" com 168,73 €, sempre em perfeito estado. Ao procurar na internet o site Popsike encontrará vários resultados de leilões entre 150 e 500€.

Portanto, era óbvio que um relançamento não seria uma má idéia. Com o passar do tempo, várias falsificações de vinil apareceram no mercado. A primeira destas falsificações ilegais foi feita na antiga Checoslováquia em 1987, juntamente com muitos outros contrabando de artigos de colecção, na sua maioria distribuídos por um negociante de Viena. Difere do original na medida em que a capa agora é dobrada e colada, como tem sido o padrão há algumas décadas. Os tipos de imagem e letra da frente também refletem o original, mas a contracapa mostra a imagem e os detalhes do registro da capa interna do original. A cor de fundo do rótulo é o original branco em parte da tiragem, laranja nos demais exemplares, com as letras sempre em preto. Apenas os primeiros 250 LPs tinham números escritos à mão em tinta azul (nem mesmo resistente à água) na capa, o restante não era numerado.

Novamente, o número do pedido (Kalacakra HP) só pode ser encontrado entre o run-off. A última falsificação até agora foi lançada em 1999 (LHA 128), provavelmente em Espanha. O fundo branco da capa foi agora substituído por um azul/violeta insípido e intrusivo (ver reimpressão na página 6), com a contracapa mostrando o mesmo desenho da primeira falsificação, mas foi tão mal produzida que quase todos os tons de cinza tinha desaparecido. Parece que não tiveram acesso ao LP original. O mesmo se aplica à qualidade do som: a faixa 1 no lado B tem um pequeno drop out que o original não tem. Mais tarde, essa falsificação foi distribuída pela gravadora italiana de contrabando Akarma. Caso haja novas repressões ilegais, os músicos tomarão medidas legais. No final de 1993, um CD legítimo de "Crawling to Lhasa" (Lost Pipedreams LP 15 CD) foi lançado com tiragem de 500 cópias, que já está esgotado. Mesmo naquela época, as fitas master haviam desaparecido porque Pallas não se preocupa em guardar coisas assim. Willy Neubauer morreu há muito tempo, seu estúdio não existe mais e nem a banda tinha mais fitas.

Isso significou que as faixas tiveram que ser retiradas do LP original e processadas digitalmente para eliminar os estalos, mas com meios técnicos insuficientes. Duas faixas bônus, inéditas, refletem um estilo bem diferente com toque étnico. Eles foram gravados em um sistema de quatro pistas no estúdio caseiro de Heinz Martin em agosto de 1993. Como o contrato entre Kalacakra e Lost Pipedreams, que parou de operar na década de 1990, havia expirado há muito tempo, foi lançada uma edição em CD remasterizada de "Crawling to Lhasa" (Garden of Delights CD 053) em 2001. Naquela época, porém, o LP foi decraqueado no MSM Studio por meio do procedimento Cedar NoNoise, o melhor disponível no momento. Este sistema elimina digitalmente todos os ruídos de groove desagradáveis, sem alterar o som original de forma perceptível.

As duas faixas bônus são as mesmas do CD Lost Pipedreams. A edição em LP de vinil de 2010 (Garden of Delights LP 002), novamente com as mesmas faixas bônus, foi a primeira edição legítima em vinil desde 1972. Ela veio em uma capa gatefold padrão com página interna direita impressa e foi limitada a 1.000 cópias numeradas à mão. Como ele foi excluído há muito tempo e é oferecido por grandes quantias, veio a edição do disco de imagens em mãos.

Após a separação da Kalacakra, Heinz Martin continuou tocando música, tocando junto com o cego Moondog (1916-1999) no Duisburg College of Pedagogy em 1974 (como Kalachakra). Ele também formou o grupo de new wave Profil e mais tarde tocou como músico convidado na Acapulco Gold. Em seu estúdio, ele se dedica principalmente à eletrônica e à world music. Claus Rauschenbach vivia do serviço social em Duisburg, sua cidade natal. Ele morreu no início de 2015.

Em 2002, Heinz R. Martin e amigos lançaram outro CD da Kalacakra chamado "Peace" (Arche Noa Records CD 20201), que segue o mesmo estilo das faixas bônus de algumas edições de "Crawling to Lhasa". Ele vem em uma caixa de CD duplo, embora seja um CD único. Claus Rauschenbach pretendia participar das gravações, mas não conseguiu começar.

Kalacakra (the "c" is to be pronounced "tch", like in "stitch") is Tibetan and means "Wheel of time", a name two friends from Duisburg in western Germany, who shared a flat in the borough of Hochfeld for one year, adopted for their musical venture, the first of its kind for Claus Rauschenbach (guitar, congas and other types of percussion, mouth-organ, and vocals).

Heinz Martin (born in Remscheid on April 26, 1949) on electric guitar, flute, shawm, violin, violoncello, piano, vibraphone, and synthesizer had already gained a lot of stage experience by playing with Below Three, a band in the style of Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge, who played support for The Move and others. He had also helped the Norwegian band Beatniks, who were later to be known under the name of Titanic, as guitarist in France for a month and played with Bill Brown who joined Eiliff later on.

 

At the time, he ran a shop for musical instruments and Indian antiques. Kalacakra was his brainchild, and he was the leader and musical head of the band. His strong inclination towards the Orient, the Far East, and especially Tibet influenced his entire musical creativity. After a couple of demo sessions in their loft, during which most of the photographs included in this booklet were made, they went into the Willy Neubauer Studio in Düsseldorf in 1972, where Dom had recorded their longplayer "Edge of time" the very same year. On an eight-track equipment, they recorded the LP "Crawling to Lhasa" (ST-K 2000), which they released themselves, manufactured by Pallas in Diepholz, with a circulation of 1000 copies. The year of release, 1972, has been backed up by convincing evidence so that sources mentioning the years 1971, 1974, and 1977 are all wrong.

By the way: Lhasa is the capital city of Tibet. Heinz Martin wrote the music and Claus Rauschenbach contributed the lyrics. The above order number is to be found only between the run off, which means that K-ST 2000, a number quoted in almost all books, is wrong. It seems as if everybody had adopted this mistake because of Achim Groh’s rather faulty discography "Aus deutschen Landen" (Mannheim 1992), a phenomenon quite frequent even in scientific works. Only the booklet of the CD edition on Garden of Delights mentions the correct order number, and since then also the database "Aga’s DB" (Thors Hammer THCD-ROM 01) and the third improved edition of the "Cosmic price guide" (Wohltorf/Hamburg 2008) by Ulrich Klatte. "ST" apparently stands for stereo, "K" for Kalacakra. The cover was not folded and glued together but consisted only of a rectangular piece of rippled cardboard, folded in the middle, similar to the first Emtidi LP and to old Swedish 7" singles, which means that the disc would have fallen out without its transparent protection bag. Front and back of the cover feature the same black design against a white background, with the title and the name of the band only appearing on the front.

The design, a Mandala, also representing the Tibetan wheel of time, is the work of an American friend of theirs. The right-hand part of the inside is purely white whereas some details on the record and the line-up are mentioned on the left. The label itself is white with black letters. The instrument slentem mentioned on the cover is a metallophone from Java, like a vibraphone. But Claus Rauschenbach has listed it only for fun – in reality he has never played such an instrument.

Lovers of psychedelic music will particularly appreciate the first track, "Nearby Shiras", with its gloomy, secretive atmosphere. Many centuries ago, the Plague raged in this central Persian city, and that is the theme of this track. The impressive third piece, "Raga nº 11", is probably the best whereas "Tante Olga" seems to be somewhat odd as many listeners will find it too bluesy. Arapaho, by the way, is an American Indian name. The song, "Tante Olga" [aunt Olga], refers to a pub of the same name. It was situated in Duisburg-Ruhrort and run by Heinz Martin's aunt Olga.

Three friends assisted the band with the financing of the record production, one of them a certain Rudi, who was in return given some hundred Kalacakra LPs he could sell in his Duisburg record shop, Rock on. When the shop went bankrupt in the mid 1970s, Reiner Seehöfer took over the stock for his own Duisburg record shop, Die Schallplatte, situated at 12 Sonnenwall. That’s were Heinz Martin later saw his LPs offered in a bargain bin for a mere three German marks apiece. The main reason for this lack of demand was that the band was basically unknown since they had very few gigs, one of them as support for the Duisburg band Bröselmaschine. The band themselves made a mess of their greatest opportunity to achieve a breakthrough: The Düsseldorf Academy of Art had become interested in Kalacakra and invited them to take part in an exhibition tour of London, Buenos Aires, and Düsseldorf. They were supposed to play ten gigs in each city for 150 deutschmarks a head per gig, but Claus Rauschenbach preferred to take a holiday on the island of Ibiza, which meant the end of their flat-sharing and the end of Kalacakra.

When, in the course of time, record collectors realized what a psychedelic jewel there was to discover, the price of the LP got higher and higher. In his book "1001 record collector dreams" (Vienna 1997), Hans Pokora gives it three units, corresponding to a price of between 180 and 330 €. The "Cosmic price guide" lists it with 400 €, the price catalogue 2017 of the German record collectors' magazine "Oldie-Markt" with 274,20 €, "Aga’s DB" with 168,73 €, always for mint condition. When you look in the internet at the site Popsike you will find there several auction results between 150 and 500 €.

It therefore was obvious that a re-release would not be a bad idea. In the course of time several vinyl counterfeits appeared on the market. The first of these illegal counterfeits was made in former Czechoslovakia in 1987 together with a lot of other bootlegs of collectors' items, mostly distributed by a dealer from Vienna. It differs from the original in so far as the cover is now folded and glued together, as has been the standard for some decades. Front picture and letter types also reflect the original, but the back cover shows the picture and details on the record of the original inside cover. The background colour of the label is the original white in part of the circulation, orange in other copies, with the letters always in black. Only the first 250 LPs had hand-written numbers in blue ink (not even water-resistant) on the front cover, the rest was unnumbered.

Again, the order number (Kalacakra HP) is to be found only between the run off. The latest counterfeit so far was released in 1999 (LHA 128), probably in Spain. The white background of the front cover was now replaced by a tasteless and obtrusive blue/violet (see reprint on page 6), with the back cover showing the same design as the first counterfeit, but was so badly produced that nearly all shades of grey had disappeared. It looks as if they did not have access to the original LP. The same applies to the sound quality: Track 1 on side B has a short drop out which the original does not have. Later that counterfeit was distributed by the Italian bootleg label Akarma. Should there be further illegal repressings, the musicians will take legal action. In late 1993, a legitimate CD of "Crawling to Lhasa" (Lost Pipedreams LP 15 CD) was released with a circulation of 500 copies, which has long since been sold out. Even at the time, the master tapes had disappeared as Pallas does not bother to store things like that. Willy Neubauer died a long time ago, his studio does not exist anymore and even the band had no tapes left.

This meant that the tracks had to be taken from the original LP and digitally processed to get rid of the crackling noises, but with insufficient technical means. Two bonus tracks, which had never before been released, reflect a very different style with ethnical touch. They were recorded on a four-track system in Heinz Martin’s home studio in August 1993. Since the contract between Kalacakra and Lost Pipedreams, who stopped operating in the 1990’s, had long since expired, there was released a remastered CD edition of "Crawling to Lhasa" (Garden of Delights CD 053) in 2001. That time, however, the LP was decrackled in the MSM Studio by means of the Cedar NoNoise procedure, the best available at the moment. This system eliminates all obnoxious groove noises digitally without changing the original sound in any noticeable way.

The two bonus tracks are the same as on the Lost Pipedreams CD. The 2010 vinyl LP edition (Garden of Delights LP 002), again with the same bonus tracks, was the first legitimate vinyl edition since 1972. It came in a standard gatefold cover with imprinted right inner page and was limited to 1000 handnumbered copies. As it is deleted since long and is offered for high amounts there came the picture disc edition at hand.

After Kalacakra had split, Heinz Martin continued playing music, performing together with blind Moondog (1916-1999) at the Duisburg College of Pedagogy in 1974 (as Kalachakra). He also formed the new-wave nad Profil and played later as guest musician with Acapulco Gold. In his studio, he mainly engages in electronics and world music. Claus Rauschenbach lived on welfare service in Duisburg, his hometown. He died in early 2015.

In 2002, Heinz R. Martin and friends released another Kalacakra CD named "Peace" (Arche Noa Records CD 20201) which is in the same style as the bonus tracks on some editions of "Crawling to Lhasa". It comes in a double CD box although it is a single CD. Claus Rauschenbach had intended to take part in the recordings, but he couldn’t get started.
