Kristyl foi uma daquelas bandas que permaneceu desconhecida por muitos anos, embora tenha havido inúmeras reedições piratas desde o início dos anos 90, tanto em vinil quanto em CD. Em 2009, a Guerssen Records trabalhou com a banda para relançar legitimamente o álbum, e as notas dessa reedição estão incluídas neste lançamento. Este lançamento difere de todos os anteriores, pois a música foi retirada das fitas master, das quais a Gear Fab adquiriu os direitos em 2020. Todos os 500 LPs prensados em 1975 apresentavam algum grau de distorção, já que a masterização anterior foi o vinil tinha deficiências óbvias na qualidade do som. HISTÓRIA

As origens da Kristyl remontam a 1972, quando Sonny De Vore e o guitarrista Bob Terrell começaram a tocar juntos no ensino médio. Por volta de 1974, David Atherton e Bruce Whiteside juntaram-se no baixo e na bateria, respectivamente, e a Kristyl nasceu. A banda tocou com frequência em sua cidade natal, Louisville, Kentucky, onde conquistou seguidores.

Exceto em shows no sul de Indiana, a banda tocou principalmente em Louisville. Como lembra Sonny: "Depois de fazer muitos shows na área de Louisville, decidimos montar um disco de músicas originais, que foi impresso em 1975. Queríamos ser conhecidos como artistas e não apenas mais uma banda de bar. O álbum foi um grande projeto e não foi financiado. Foi pago principalmente por mim, com uma ajudinha dos outros". Quando questionado sobre influências para sua música, Sonny lembra de gostar de guitarristas como Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix e Mark Farner e de bandas como Led Zeppelin e Pink Floyd. Sobre o parceiro de composição de Sonny, Bob Terrell, Terry Wells lembra que: "Bob Terrell era um grande fã dos Beatles. Ele tinha todos os álbuns dos Beatles. Ele era o tipo de cara que conseguia escrever músicas o dia todo. Havia sete músicas no álbum da Kristyl. Sonny e Bob provavelmente escreveram mais de cem canções juntos. O álbum foi gravado localmente em Louisville, com apenas um engenheiro de estúdio auxiliando a banda, que ficou totalmente responsável pelos arranjos e produção. Sonny sente hoje que o álbum saiu bem, mas que algumas letras e a qualidade da gravação poderiam ter sido feitas melhor. Como muitos artistas que estão em estúdio pela primeira vez, ele achou que o álbum impresso finalizado não soava tão bem quanto a gravação em estúdio. O memorável design da capa veio de uma pintura feita por Sonny. 500 cópias foram prensadas (e não 200 como foi dito no passado) sem qualquer distribuição formal, para serem vendidas localmente a amigos e fãs.

Kristyl continuou por mais alguns anos depois de fazer o álbum, com Terry Wells substituindo David Atherton como baixista e um novo baterista chamado Mike substituindo Bruce Whiteside. Atherton mais tarde voltou à banda em uma nova posição como vocalista, e Kristyl se tornou Spare Change. Kristyl was one of those bands that remained largely unknown for many years even though there have been numerous bootleg reissues since the early 90's on both vinyl and CD. In 2009, Guerssen Records worked with the band to legitimately reissue the album, and the liner notes from that reissue are included in this release. This release differs from all previous ones, in that the music was taken off the master tapes, which Gear Fab purchased the rights to this in 2020. All of the 500 LPs pressed back in 1975 had some degree of warping, as the previous mastering off vinyl had obvious deficiencies in sound quality. Sit back and enjoy this great music in the spirit it was written and performed.

HISTORY

The origins of Kristyl go back to 1972, when Sonny De Vore and rhythm guitarist Bob Terrell started playing together in high school. Around 1974 David Atherton and Bruce Whiteside joined on bass and drums respectively, and Kristyl was born. The band played frequently in their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, where they developed a following.

Except for gigs in nearby southern Indiana, the band played mostly around Louisville. As Sonny recalls it: "After playing many shows in the Louisville area we decided to put together a record of original songs, which was printed in 1975. We wanted to be known as recording artists and not just another bar band. The album was a huge project and wasn't financed. It was mostly paid for by me, with a little help from the others". When asked about influences for his music, Sonny recalls liking guitar players such as Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix and Mark Farner and bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Regarding Sonny's song writing partner Bob Terrell, Terry Wells remembers that: "Bob Terrell was a big Beatles fan. He had every Beatles album. He was the kind of guy who could write songs on the fly all day long. There were seven songs on the Kristyl album. Sonny and Bob had probably written over a hundred songs together. To me, everyone of them were as good as the songs on the 'Kristyl' album. They were just a little bit more commercialized".

The album was recorded locally in Louisville, with only a studio engineer assisting the band, who were completely in charge of arrangements and production. Sonny feels today that the album came out ok, but that some of the lyrics and the quality of the recording could have been done better. Like many artists who are in the studio for the first time, he thought that the finished printed album didn't sound as good as the studio recording had. The memorable front cover design came from a painting made by Sonny. 500 copies were pressed up (not 200 as has been stated in the past) without any formal distribution, to be sold locally to friends and fans.

Kristyl continued for a few more years after making the album, with Terry Wells replacing David Atherton as the bass player, and a new drummer named Mike replacing Bruce Whiteside. Atherton later rejoined the band in a new spot as lead singer, and Kristyl became Spare Change. As Sonny recalls it, substantial demand for the 1975 album didn't come until many years after the release, when the band was already long gone. In the early 1980s several boxes of unsold copies had been thrown away by Sonny's wife to make room for a new family member. Some years after that Sonny sold the remainder of his original copies to a collector who had tracked him down.

Neither Sonny De Vore nor Bob Terrell were involved in any recordings before or after Kristyl, although Sonny has recorded some solo CDs of guitar music for friends and family in recent years. In spite of its high standing among retro music lovers, the Kristyl album has been poorly served by the reissue labels, and what you're holding in your hand is in fact the first ever fully authorized reproduction of this true classic among 1970s private pressings.
