Formada em junho de 1969, a banda era liderada pelo ex-Rebel Rouser Cliff Bennett e, no decorrer de sua carreira de dois anos e dois álbuns, apresentava o guitarrista e tecladista Ken Hensley, o baixista John Glascock (que substituiu o baixista original John Konas [Joseph Stanley Konas]) e o baterista Lee Kerslake. Toe Fat has signed a contract with Rare Earth in the US. In the UK, the band signed with EMI, which released their first album on the Parlophone label, and the second on Regal Zonophone.
The first album, self-titled, failed commercially, but gained considerable critical praise. Such was their upheaval that after their first single, "Workin' nights" (the b side was an early composition by Elton John, "Bad side of the moon") they were booked for a tour supporting Derek and the Dominos in the USA. The album was also notable for its cover designed by the newly formed graphic art company Hipgnosis. The cover showed a beach scene with four people having large fingers superimposed over their heads. For the US release, a topless man and woman in the background was replaced by the image of a sheep. The photo of the band on the back of the US album shows Cliff Bennett, Alan Kendall, John Glascock and Lee Kerslake, although Alan Kendall did not play the first album. This was an interim training, Lee Kerslake was soon to depart as well before the second album was recorded.
Hensley left the band to form Uriah Heep. Alan Kendall replaced Hensley before his second album, "Two". Bennett admitted in the notes on the cover of his album "Rebellion" that when asked he "probably should have joined them". Kerslake left to join the National Head Band before also joining Uriah Heep in 1971. Glascock later joined Jethro Tull Another former Gods, Brian Glascock, became the new drummer.
Jonathan Peel (not the DJ) produced "Two" after listening to them on various BBC radio sessions, including one for Terry Wogan. However, this LP also failed, despite more radios and a reasonably successful North American tour promoting it. After these successive failures, management and labels informed the group that they could no longer finance them.

Bennett recorded "Rebellion", before leaving the music industry to become a shipping magnate. He used to tour with Rebel Rousers. Alan Kendall and Brian Glascock continued to play and write for the Bee Gees.
