Asgard (Progressive Folk Rock {França})

A banda de progressive folk rock foi formada em Caen, França. Pouco se sabe além de que ela tinha um bom contrato com a Warner Bros e que começou como um trio formado por Patrick Grandpierre (guitarra, vocais), William Lawday (baixo, violino) e Bernard Darsh (percussão, vocals, flauta). Com essa formação a banda gravou o álbum de 1976 ''L'hirondelle", lançado na França e no Canadá, em um caminho tradicional de folk/folk rock. No próximo álbum, "Tradition & renouveau" (1978), eles adicionaram Guy Printemps nos teclados e, novamente, o álbum foi lançado na França e Canadá.

O título do segundo álbum o representa bem, pois, Asgard manteve muitas de suas influências tradicionais, mas as estendeu um pouco mais com a adição de teclados e o uso proeminente de guitarras elétricas. The progressive folk rock band was formed in Caen, France. The title of the second album represents it well, as Asgard retained many of its traditional influences, but extended them a little further with the addition of keyboards and the prominent use of electric guitars. The tracks are full of melodic textures, romantic flutes, a few light doses of violin and an almost constant electro-acoustic environment. The addition of Guy Printemps only did well for the band and its discreet piano and synthesizer lines complete a soft but still quite attractive musical background. Traditional and reformulated folk songs meet the sharpest edges of rock instrumentation, and the album contains very nice instrumental combinations of keys, guitars, flute and violin.

The best is saved for the other side, where the band makes a slight turn towards more dramatic pieces, in which I highlight "Les landes d'harou" which presents a slightly more melancholic atmosphere, with declaimed vocals, calm mood based on flute and electro-acoustic and a cathartic and bombastic end section with a symphonic vibration based on heavy bass lines, flutes and keyboards. This is one of the songs of the genre that I like the most and I dare say it's among the top 10 progressive rock songs I've ever heard.

Immediately post-Asgard, Darsch provided technical services for a range of artists, including compatriots Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes, Irish Celt ensemble The Bothy Band, and West Indies soul-funk trio The Gibson Brothers. During the early 1980s, he engineered a local rockabilly revival on Big Beat Records.
